Pete,
Was planning to attend, but have just produced a positive lateral flow test. Asymptomatic and totally out of the blue. But I am afraid it rules me out. Have a good one!

Pete,
You list IV/83 WOTR. Does that include the two rebel armies IV/83b and IV/83c (Henry Tudor and Lambert Simnel)?

Hello! I'm working on my first DBA army and I'm have trouble determining what Sumerian armor was made of. So are you planning to start at the beginning and work your way through the entire book? Just curious. Scott

I know it is usually an error to try to explain the rules with reference to the historical situation, but...
I have always envisaged voluntary withdrawal through friends as depending on the friends standing in straight lines and the index element having the discipline to pass through those gaps without disordering the stationary unit. I suppose this might apply to less than 10% of armies!
As for outcome moves, the unit originally in front is either pushed back, or flees backwards of its own volition and if its hits the rear unit at an angle it is likely to encounter resistance. Indeed self interest might suggest that they would get no further than the shields of their friends who would be more than happy for them to blunt the impact of the enemy.
So I think it is unrealistic for an element making an outcome move to pass through a friendly unit with whom it is not exactly lined up (and I find even the passing through if exactly lined up eventuality somewhat fanciful).

Well it doesn't apply to the last round games. The last game you play with your own army against an opponent decided by the placing and the Swiss Chess system. The first game opponents may be decided according to the army rating, I honestly don't know, but if so, given the final placings of the armies, you would have to agree that Martin's system got it spot on.

Thanks for an excellent day, Martin. Great to see so many old friends after a long two years. I had a few close games, but must admit, while my dice throws were pretty average, I always seemed to get a good throw when I needed one.
With regard to why the Sicilians did so well, There is a matching process which ensures that armies are reasonably well matched. If you have an hour or two to spare, you might ask Martin how it works, but essentially any army with six psiloi is likely to avoid powerful opponents. I don't know who the Sicilians faced in rounds 2-5, but I expect Martin will send us the details in due course.

I suppose it is a bit like Cocker Spaniels being blue roan or orange roan when for all the world they look to be black or brown.

Possibly the tufts might be animal tails? So lots of squirrel skins sewn together? I think the "furs" in heraldry (usually ermine) have those odd vertical pointy decorations to represent this.

Hmmn.
Can't find my copy of DBA 2.2. My recollection is that the rule said the twelve elements deployed in the first game had to be used in all subsequent games.
As an aside, Stevie, have you listed anywhere all the rules you think are not played as written? Just curious.

Chaotic,
The "matched pairs" format is an integral part of the UK DBA tournament scene with both Alton and Bakewell using it to popular acclaim for many years. Many would suggest it to be the ideal format for DBA.
Stevie,
We were fortunate at our club in that the enjoyment of the game has always been more important than the result, and there would often be a discussion before a game along the lines of "I fancied trying the variant with the auxilia instead of the spear, do you fancy using the light horse heavy variant against them?". We were just wondering how to get over the "are you using elephants, I might or might not use artillery?" type conversation.
I must admit I had missed the obligation to declare army composition before the start of the first game of a tournament (in fact I suspect a subtle change in wording from 2.2, I will try to find my old rule set), and I acknowledge the implication regarding friendly games too.

Is the issue not somewhat broader than this? When is the entire army composition decided?
After a somewhat fractious discussion with a member of our club, who would try to see your army before deciding on his own, I asked of the community (when the rules were version 2.2), how this was usually managed for friendly games. Long standing member Bob Beattie, pointed me to the relevant section of the rules, which appear to be the same in version 3.0. Deployment (abridged version!): Dice for aggression. Defender places terrain Invader selects a base edge. Defender places camp Attacker places camp Defender deploys elements Attacker deploys elements etc.etc.etc.
So under RAW there is no need for the attacker even to choose his/her army composition in friendly games, (or even for the first round of a tournament, see p 13) until the defender has deployed his/her entire army.
This was not how we played it. As a rule one player would produce two armies and give the opponent the choice. But as Bob said, these are the rules.

Assuming the elements have a 3 BW move, 2 is OK but if move is only 2 BW, I would suggest that 2 is illegal as the left front corner of element A moves too far (just over 2.5 BW). As you say, 3 is not legal.

A friend of mine, who lives in NYC, is looking for a painted 54 mm Roman civilian figure. Ideally a philosopher type citizen.
Can anybody recommend a custom painting service in the USA who might be able to provide this?
