Was looking over my collection, and realizing that for armies with multiple grades of cavalry, I tend to paint the light horse with literally lighter-colored horses...

That’s horse racism Kaiphranos! (But it’s probably better than my method of having 3Kn on dark green bases, and the 3Cv on light green ones, just so that I can tell the buggers apart)

To be honest I do often paint commanders on white or grey horses so it is easier to see who they are. Most of the rest I paint brown, a chum says there are no such things brown horses so I always use that term when I think he may hear or see it.

Most of the rest I paint brown, a chum says there are no such things brown horses so I always use that term when I think he may hear or see it. Oh yes, commanders often get distinctive horses of some sort. But that might be because I often give them a little extra attention!

Proof he is wrong, superb. If I get round to it I will take some pics of my Bolshevik cavalry. They have a blue and a yellow horse.

That’s strange...when, in a previous life*, horse colourings were mentioned there definitely weren’t any browns.... The ‘brown’ on that website would’ve been called a ‘dark bay’. ie a darker brown with black mane and tail.
* a life in which a couple of horses used to empty my wallet on a regular basis, to no apparent benefit for their health or wellbeing....😶

I suppose it is a bit like Cocker Spaniels being blue roan or orange roan when for all the world they look to be black or brown.

Same range of colors for all my horses regardless as to whether they are LH, CV, or KN.
Although I do on occasion paint the horses of an element the same color if they belong to an army that might have looked for a more uniform look to a unit as did more modern cavalry.
I read in a post (Jeff Caruso - old Fanaticus???) that Mongols and perhaps other steppe tribes tended to more uniform colors in their horse herds and thus in their cavalry. With a lack of uniforms a good way to tell who your friends and enemies are.

...and of course siblings...only one obsessed with horses, led to much translation...
“That one is a bay”. Background echo “Brown!” “That’s a dun”....”Brown” “A chestnut and a roan”. “Both brown”. Etc.
