Hello! I'm working on my first DBA army and I'm have trouble determining what Sumerian armor was made of. I have confirmed that the helmets were copper, unsure if they have a wool cover. I'm most confused now though on the cloaks with metal discs. I've seen some sources say they were hide/leather and some same a dyed wool. If they are wool, what color would they be? If anyone could point me in the direction of what materials these were made of, I would really really appreciate it. In lieu of definitive source, I think I will paint their cloaks a blue-grey or brown-grey wool. Any pointers on historically accurate colors would be appreciated! Thanks! Brynn Edit: found this: "Regarding armor, the current state of our knowledge suggests that third millennium armies did not wear metal armor, but rather heavy leather or woolen cloaks that would not have likely survived for archaeological recovery; it should be kept in mind, however, that this data comes from pre-Ur III periods." Elements of the Neo-Sumerian Military Patterson, Daniel. University of Pennsylvania. ProQuest Dissertations Publishing, 2018. Edit of the Edit: found an excellent scholarly source on dyes edelsteincenter.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/koren-1993-colors-from-nature.pdf

Brynn Hi Brynn, I can recommend βThe Shepherd Protects Their Flockβ by Chris Flaherty, which details the early Sumerian armies from top to bottom. Nicely illustrated and is available to download from a number of sites. Look to the free offers. Note: Cloaks were either wool or leather.

I was able to find source that confirmed they were either wool or leather. I think I will paint them as though they were wool. Do you happen to know what colors they dyed their fabric?

Just curious. Scott Oh no, I am just really interested in Sumeria and Mesopotamia. Also I don't think I have space for more than a few armies
