I think we all know that there will be no DBA 3.1 or DBA 4 under PB and that's OK. PB has more than done his bit. But it would be a travesty for his work to be lost to the future. Simply, DBA gives a fantastic game based on historical warfare with minimal outlay. I can't see army level games survive without DBA or similar to allow players to get playing early. Otherwise skirmish games will continue to grow and dominate. Ideally, the DBA 3 engine continues on either with WRG or with other parties (something I would support if it was possible). Perhaps under a new name as DBA is PBs legacy. Certainly with a different writing style to allow further spread of the rules. As for the army lists, they are an enormous resource and WRG (PB) deserve to profit from them. It seems that others have profited from them (with due compensation?). But they will long outlive the rules. For me, if this is the last edition then I will play DBA3 for a long time to come.
Cheers

It is for exactly this reason I avoid spherical dice. Or the fabled D3692, or anything else with more faces. D1000 max. Hi attilathenun, what do you think of this? It might be a solution to our problem! Cheers, Brian Ahhhh....the origins of football explained!

I think I used a 40 grit sander belt. Cut out. Paint, paint, paint, drybrush and matte sealant. No longer a danger to paintwork and easy to drape over terrain.

Looking forward to seeing the finished castle. You can also get quick brick/rock work on XPS foam with the multiple rollers available. Faster than carving.

What happens when both sides lose an element in the same bound and they then both fail to beat their casualty figure? A few possible options: - it's an indecisive battle (there are historical examples) - roll at the fall of each element, not at the end of the bound (gives the aggressor the advantage) - play until the next element falls As it's a house rule, you can do whatever feels right at the time. Certainly scenarios allow for different victory conditions and should be encouraged! Sometimes the hard rule of four elements has the player looking for the one last kill like a predator stalking a herd instead of fighting the battle. One variant I've considered is to roll after each element lost and you have to roll over the number of elements lost to stay in the fight. It's simple and needs nuance (e.g. only start rolling after three elements lost) but it's a start.

Welcome Brian!
Unfortunately you have found a (potential) weakness in DBA 3. A blade-heavy army will outmuscle an auxillia-heavy army in open terrain ("billiard table terrain"). But the Irish have the advantage of being Aggression 1 versus the Aggression 4 Vikings. So the Irish will choose terrain most of the time. Being Littoral they can narrow the battlefield with a Waterway and then place enough Bad Going to make it a fair fight. The weakness is that there is no compulsion for the Vikings to enter the Bad Going so you may end up with a stalemate. DBA 3 doesn't have a strategic component that would force one of the combatants to attack. Campaign rules help with this problem but not in one-off battles. This also happens with Rivers, which seem too much of an obstacle for most people to bother deploying. As for ranking armies, there are so many variables that this would be difficult, which is a good thing. If there was a tweak to have the lighter armies defend in their own terrain more often and light horse armies to out scout their enemies then armies would be even more evenly matched, making the game even better.
Cheers

Another option for generals is to differentiate front rank fighting generals (+1 combat/-1 PIPs) and rear rank commanding generals (normal PIPs / no combat bonus)

Lovely work! Big fan of nice terrain for DBA. If you need more scatter you could make an animal skin drying on a X-frame with twigs and a small bit of thin card. Bake the twigs to kill the bacteria. Tear the card to the appropriate size and shape (tearing gives nice rough natural edges). Soak the card in water:PVA (50:50) and scrunch it up to give a more natural texture. Then glue it down and paint.

Actually Haardrada, the HoTT 2.1 “Fleeing” rule, on page 25, second sentence from the bottom says:- “Friends it cannot pass through, under or over, nor avoid, are burst through, then flee behind until it stops.” Sadly DBA 3.0 does not have this very sensible and realistic rule (shame)... I was unaware of that rule Stevie as I've never dabled in HoTT since a short glimps of the first rule book many moons ago...it then vanished from the club cupboard.🕵️ But as for a solution you've got it right there.😉 To misquote Obi-Wan Kenobi' "an elegant solution for a more civilised age" Jim

The timing is important. I was thinking first of the non-compulsory items as a simple rule without the calculations. But like everything, it needs test, test, testing!

It is done!
I had the great idea to not only paint this army for a tournamen, but a Warmaster army too, for a local tournament 2 weeks later. Amazing planning on my end. Anyway, first army is done, and I am quite happy with the result. It's mostly speedpaints and some very simple freehands. I will DEFINITELY not use wire spears unless absolutely necessary; those little bastard sticks might be my new least favourite hobby thing . Looks great! Any tips with Speedpaints on 15mm? I'm just starting with them on 28mm. Cheers Jim
