Here's the latest picture, with all base coats finished. I don't know if it's blurry because I moved or because I took it with insufficient light (today is a very dark, cloudy, rainy day). Anyway, this is how it looks before I applied the various washes which I have since done. When dry I will share another picture so you can see it before I start doing the highlights and details. Vodnik, that looks like a great figure of a Kirin. It is usually described as a mix of a unicorn and a dragon. For mine, I wanted to go with the look as depicted on the movie. Here's a little update. I have started the base coats, but more importantly I have begun adding little features with thickened paint. For some reason white has always seemed the best color doing that. It's a slow process as you have to slowly build on the previous layer and shaping the addition to resemble what you I'm after. They might be hard to see in this picture, but I have started to add the goatee under his chin, the fur ridge to his lower chest and the fur ridge on his tail. These are just base coats so the look is very crude. My style is to then build on them with thin washes and colors to create the finished model. This is the picture I am using for he final painting and modeling. It offers the best image to work form, but I have also studied the clip dozens of times and captured other pictures from the net. Here is the status for now, but am hoping to get a little brush time in before the day is done. Terry

And this is the fully assembled figure ready for priming and painting. More to follow as I progress on the model. Terry

Yesterday I spent a few hours working on the figure and creating the necessary pieces to create it. Today I assembled them and will prime it for painting. Here is a good profile of the model as I am hoping he will resemble when finished. The figures needed to create the figure are two Splintered light Wood Trolls, and an 25 MM Irregular Scottish Cattle figure. The red lines indicate where cuts are to be made for some of the pieces needed. The horns and cast on tail are removed from the cow figure, and then the fur is filed down smooth on the rear portion, but be sure to leave a ridge of fur along the top of the back, and also part of the front of the face was filed smooth. I also filed smooth an area to paint the six eyes in. I reshaped the rear portion of the underbody to look like that of the profile above. I made a cut into the mouth to have it slightly open as I thought that might help make it a little less docile looking. Then holes were drilled to take the new tail, the new horns, the whiskers(?) and the tree limbs(?). Lastly I filled in any deep grooves with liquid green stuff, filed it smooth and then sanded with a very fine sandpaper. The tree limbs and whiskers were cut from the tree trolls, and the new tail and new horns were made from old pieces of cast lances cut and filed to shape. I made an area on the tail at the end into sort of a clump of fur. Here is the finished reshaped body and the assorted pieces that will be super glued to the body using the holes that were drilled. To help strengthen the bond I also filed a peg on each piece that was to be glued to the body.

I started today to create a Kirin based on the one depicted in the beginning of the movie 47 Ronin. I've always thought it was too cool looking not to have so after a little thought figured out a good way to create one. So, I have created all the pieces I will need and once I file smooth a few deep marks I puttied in I'll start assembling and painting it. It will be a Behemoth in my Ninja army to help aid Lady Snowblood in her fight for revenge and good (because a Kirin served to help only the good). www.youtube.com/watch?v=cY-7stjTT3oTerry

The Werewolf Brigade, another copy from Alan Saunders. The figures are Essex Germans with Peter Pig wolf heads, and Peter Pig wolves. The Nazi Zombies, which if you’ve seen Dead Snow, the Outpost series or War of the Dead, then you’ll understand that you just have to have some very aggressive Nazi zombies. These are Rebel Minis and were quite fun to paint up. To give you an idea of just how aggressive these bad boys are, the leading element was charging faster than I could focus the camera!!!! The mounted elements of the army. The Panther Lehr is a conversion of a Pendraken 10 MM Panther tank sans the turret with a Splintered Light modified mythological panther melded to it. May not look like such a bad thing – but it isn’t bothered by bad going and those claws and fangs are plenty sharp! I really like using the Pendraken models because they are nicely done, fit the allowed base without looking too small, and again just great service. The Dino-Panzers were taken from the trailer of “Iron Sky 2” that shows Hitler riding on a T-Rex.. The dinosaurs are from Splintered Light and came with armor on head and body, and the riders are Essex ACW buglers with a head and arm swap. More bad boys and very aggressive – thus Knights! Finally the air arm of the army. The Terror Bird. This is an Irregular Miniatures reptile bird with an Essex ACW general wearing a Peter Pig VSF head with a gasmask converted to a flying helmet and oxygen mask. Had to give the bird a yellow nose for those well appreciated “Abbeville Boys” who were noted for their yellow nosed Me 109s. I am finishing up the Stronghold for my US Hollywood army, which is based on the scene where Captain America sees the wounded being unloaded from the Dodge ambulance. Once done I am very anxious to set these two armies against each other. The Stronghold is nearly done so it should be pretty soon! Terry

I have finished the basing for my Red Skull Weird WWII army - a fun army to do with lots of head swaps and conversions. I have to give credit again to Alan Saunders who planted the Weird World War bug in my mind and for the elements I copied from him. Alan was kind enough to help me understand his thought process for the themes behind his armies, and for help with specific questions. This army was created to specifically fight my Weird WWII US Hollywood army. The theme behind Red Skull’s army is one of the biological sciences as opposed to the physical sciences. Ideas , besides those directly from Alan, came from various movies – The Outposts series, The Devil’s Rock, Iron Sky, Captain America: The First Avenger, War of the Dead, Dead Snow, and The Keep. The idea for the Terror Bird came from the Weird War comic book that featured the “Bird of Death”. The Death’s Head Legion and the Werewolf Brigade are taken directly from Alan’s Weird WWII German army, and the Panther Lehr is just a play on words for the Panzer Lehr, and which seemed to fit the theme and make for a fun conversion. The Stronghold is not the one I have planned for this army, as I want to use “the Keep”, but I’m waiting on a friend with some power tools who can help me converts some castle walls to make it. This bunker I am using until then is my adaption of the fire control bunker used in the movie “The Devil’s Rock”. It is a 6 MM model and a conversion with the tall upper tower added (it will later become the Stronghold for my Weird WWII Post Apocalyptic German army). Red Skull’s Army. The Stronghold made from a 6 MM Leven Miniatures bunker model. I really like his models and the service is exceptional. Red Skull, Magician General, in his laboratory with Dr. Zola and the laser gun. The assorted lab equipment was created from assorted bits and pieces I found from various makers and was great fun to do. But installing the power cables after everything was put on the base was more than a little tricky, but they finally worked out. The Death’s Head Legion, a copy of Alan Saunders’ elements. These are made from Essex and Peter Pig Germans with Peter Pig skulls.

Hi Martin, First off thanks for adding some pictures here. I am always inspired by the creative armies I see you all do over there. We had some creativity this time as well. I'll be announcing next years theme shortly and it always makes me anxious to see what gets fielded.
As for the voting for the Barker Award and the Beattie Stronghold Award that will take place shortly after the last Legs have been played and I receive everyone's pictures of their Leg's contender. We have the MidWest Leg tomorrow, and unless I am missing something I think that brings this years GBnU to a close. So hope to have everything I need shortly after that. I'll need to check and see who I'm missing contestant photos form.
Thanks for your support and for helping make the Staines such a success. By the way I love your Spartan army and am sorry it didn't fare better. I played my Ninja army with Lady Snowblood as a Paladin, and managed two wins, but since David Crenshaw always cheats I lost that one. Well, he may not exactly cheat.....he just rolls higher die numbers than I do, so in his case, that's cheating isn't it!

Hi Martin, Just had a most enjoyable time looking through your pictures of the day, and as always some really inspiring armies there. The Prussian Napoleonic army is one of interest as I've wanted to do a Napoleonic HotT army for some time, so I'm always interested in how others have approached it.
I also saw there was a western army and that too is a favorite period of mine.
I really liked the Ares figure with the red eyes!!!
My congrats to all, and thanks to Tim Moore for handling the Staines Leg of the GBnU, and all the participants. I'm sure I'll be hearing from Tim shortly with details.
Later,
Terry

My last game against Bill’s Strange and Norrel army. I was feeling so full of myself about the 3rd or 4th bound in when I had the door closed on his General only to have the die fail me and he not only survived but ended up taking out the attacking element. The moral of the story – never count your victory until you actually have it! A view of David and Bob’s last game – Romans versus Picts…..couldn’t be any more factual!!! I apologize for not getting any pictures of Dave Cliffel’s games, but it turned out that I didn’t play him and also did not find myself sitting next to him, so there wasn’t an opportunity. Probably best for him because this way I didn’t jinx him and allowed him to take the first place prize!!! It was a really fun day and the first for a good while that the core group had been able to get together for some gaming and fellowship – which is always a win to me! I have to express my very sincere thnaks to Scott Reeves of HMGS MidSouth who has been so committed to helping keep this tournament going, not just locally, but internationally. I also want to thank Josh Krebs again for providing us with such a great place to meet and do battle. And it would not be proper to overlook the ongoing and very appreciated support of Splintered Light Miniatures and Rebel Minis for their continued support. I also want to express thanks to Mike McEwan of the Shetland Islands who arranged for this years tournament give-away. There are still a few Legs to play before bringing 2016 to a close, and then we’ll be announcing the theme for the 2017 tournament. Terry

David’s Picts engaging Bill’s Strange and Norrel army. Notice they are battling it out over a self ensorcelled Magician – a situation that happed more than once during the day as it seems most armies had Magicians. My second game with my Ninja’s facing David’s Picts. What a blood bath it was for not only Lady Snowblood, but the entire Ninja army! A real mish mash of a line after David’s Picts totally out maneuvered me, allowing him to gang up and destroy element after element. It was a 12 to 2 loss for the Ninjas!!! Bob’s Roman army facing Paul’s Geats. Notice Bob’s new Flier element of a witch over a pumpkin patch – very creative.

The Nashville Leg of the Good, bad and Ugly Tournament is now history, being held this past Saturday, November 5th. The core group of HotT players showed up and a truly wonderful facility made available by Josh Krebs. Realizing the small number of players, two long tables were set up with four game boards, but with only six players we used only three boards. I was not surprised at some of the locals not being able to make it as this was also the weekend of Fall In and I know many of the locals guys enjoy attending that convention. We played three rounds and except for Dave Cliffel taking the lead from the start and not budging from that position the other scores changed some what as each round was played. We tried a new scoring system to hopefully remove the penalty for winning a game with less than 12 enemy element points destroyed. It worked OK, and may have been better than the old system which seemed to penalize an early win by taking the General or the Stronghold, but we’ll continue to look at it and maybe have an even better scoring system for next year. The final results and the armies played were, in order Dave Cliffel – Mirada – Bad David Crenshaw - Picts – Bad Paul Potter – Geats – Good Terry Webb – Ninja – Bad Bill Banks – Strange and Norrel – Good Bob Gunter – Romans Good For the first time in Nashville history, Bad stomped Good winning 7 games to 2. A few pictures of the event. The participants, all smiles after some hard fought battles. During the first round., with some surprising results at the end…. My Ninja army with Lady Snowblood and a Tora (tiger) facing Paul’s new Geat army. Had to include a picture of the beautiful standards Paul had done for his new Geat army. He told me they were all taken from vintage sources and I thought they were awesome. My apology the picture is a little blurred.

Mark, Are you wanting to go by the movie or as Tolkien envisioned it? They are dramatically different. I have a small chess piece one based on the movie, but it's only about 5 inches tall at most - would that be of any help?
I plan to build one from Irregular Miniatures building pieces to more resemble the way Tolkien envisioned it for my army, and can share what I'm using there if that would help as well.
Let me know,
Terry
