Decided to break a little from my army painting plan. Had planned to finish my later Swiss Confederates. Instead I curated out the models required last night for a Early Swiss Eidgenossen, circa the Battle of Sempach. Am priming them up this morning. I had planned to do this army at a later date but had a sudden urge to do a 6Bd army. For 6Bd’s Kaptain Kobold has a lovely early Swiss army on The Stronghold Rebuilt. Very inspiring... Geoff

What about Ancient & Modern - the Donnington Minatures range? They sell individual figures, so a really good option if you want a nice mix of figures or, say, just a single element of a particular troop type. Regards,

I see they also do a Thirty Years War game - boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/164823/fire-and-sword-solitaire-game-thirty-years-war-161That game looks good and I’ve been umm-ing and ahh-ing ever since lockdown started. Unfortunately my printer needs replacing (and I wouldn’t know how to get a new one and make it print from an iPad) so I haven’t taken the important step yet. I know, Cromwell, that you are fond of Hundred Years War and Wars of the Roses gaming. Berserker Games also have games that cover those periods too. Keep safe, Geoff Ps - on a positive note, I won some painted 15mm American Civil War Confederate figures from eBay. ‘‘Tis only a shame they aren’t really a match for the small 15mm old school Mikes Models Nikephorian Byzantines 🤔

NOT ENTIRELY SERIOUS, but what about... something similar to the TV show “Name That Tune”?
Player A: If I was playing the Attacker I could win this battle in ... 8 turns. Player B: If I was playing the Attacker I could win this battle in ... 7 turns. Player A: If I was playing the Attacker I could win this battle in ... 6 turns. Player B: Hmmm. OK, try and win that battle.
Player A is now the Attacker and has agreed to (attempt to) win the battle by - ideally - no later than the completion of the sixth turn. There is, however, the possibility that combat may continue beyond this arbitrary time/number of turns. If the battle has NOT been won by the completion of the agreed turn, then throw, say, 1D4. If the score is a 1 then “this next turn is the final turn”, otherwise play to the completion of that turn and, if still no victory has been achieved, throw 1D4 again. This time, if the score is 1 or 2 then “this next turn is the final turn”. Again, play to the completion of that turn and, if still no victory has been achieved, throw 1D4 again. Repeat as above, this time with a score of 1 or 2 or 3 indicating “this next turn is the final turn”. If, at the completion of that turn, victory has still not been achieved then the very next turn will be the final turn.
Any thoughts? Or are you all thinking Name That Tune, yeah - I remember that.
Take care and keep safe,
Geoff

I trust you just inserted a 1 between the 4 and the 3. 😷

2) For somewhat different Indian Wars, a force of US Cavalry, now only needing gunmetal, guidons and magic wash. Should be enough for the 8 x Mounted Infantry in the HotE army list (Peter Pig). Why not try some camels as mounted infantry in the arid American southwest? The U.S. Camel Corps was experimenting with pack camels from the mid 1850s, so it’s not too much of a stretch to include camel mounted troopers. And, of course, the Persians deployed camel mounted zambuks (a jingals fired from camel back) at around the same time, so that’s also a possibility. Regards, Geoff

Would the world be a better place if we all played with little toy soldiers? Or would each of us be individually disappointed that were no longer an elite, specialist “niche” bunch of hobbyists?
I did originally start with a minor rant about politics, but soon deleted it when I realised it was no real help and then decided to get back to my preferred subject of tiny metal warriors.

Def not starting a new force. Must finish my British cavalry, then the Romans, then the Pikes, then the etc etc etc However me and three chums from Janco's went to The Joy Of Six, which was great and decided to go 6mm. I got EAP and we are basing them on DBA bases but intend to use em with DBA, Lart, HC and Impetus. Magnifying glass will be purchased. Must admit EAP is a strong, strong possibility for me too. I have some 6mm generic Greeks and they need an opponent. Are you using Baccus figures, or Rapier? How deep do you intend to base your sparabara? Both Baccus and Rapier were at the Joy of Six show. I enjoyed this years show, but not as much as last year (when there were DBA participation games). Cheers, Geoff

Paddy 649 - I'm looking forwards to seeing the pictures of the completed camp/wall.
Disney's Mulan was on TV the other week and the attack of the "Huns" to breach the wall was inspirational.
FWIW you can often find nice terrain sold as aquarium ornaments, although some of these items do seem quite large. I guess the manufacturers need to make them big enough for small fish to swim around and through, rather than wondering "how would this ruined castle look with some painted metal soldiers on the walls?".

Would these be any use for the Hordes ? SA7 Sassanid Persian: Levy Spearman Yes, these figures might be suitable for the Khazars, but the distinctive hat would need to be disguised (add milliput to try re-shape into a fur hat?). I think the Sassanid spearmen above - with their big beards and felt hats - are much, much more suitable as Elbonians. And surely there's no-one who doesn't like Dilbert. Geoff

I also see the new Osprey book has some lovely illustrations of various strongholds/defences which may be suitable inspiration for the skilled modeller (so not me then).
