I did spot a III/41b Chichimec or Pueblo Cultures among the responses so far! Khurasan Miniatures make a range of Chichimec/ Dog Peoples. The figures look quite nice and are certainly an unusual, off-the-beaten-track force. I can see why you might want to collect an army of Chichimec. My original thoughts were more along the lines of “who would want to collect any DBA army where the commander(s) were inept/bad generals, where the army had only a string of defeats, where no-one manufactures suitable miniatures, even where we cannot be certain what the warriors looked/fought like?” Sure, in a campaign setting, you might theoretically be able to raise such a force - but would you want to?

Thanks Kaiphranos for all your efforts with the Census. I’ve completed it. It’s amazing how many armies we have. That’s assuming, of course, that a bag full of unpainted lead counts as an “army” Sadly, my unpainted armies far outweigh the painted ones. Maybe one day… My plan is still that once I retire fully (as distinct from just working part-time) I will magically wake up one day, discover I am the acclaimed leader of an army of “painting elves” and set them to work painting and basing my lead mountain. Regards, Geoff

OK. So I know there are threads for “How many armies” and “Who’s painting what” but are there any armies that no-one can be bothered to collect or paint?
Thoughts?

The Maximillian rules differ from DBA as they use a sort of continuous combat system. You beat your enemies element and it recoils you fight again. Also light horse can shoot. More complex than DBA but more period flavour. There are also army retreating and routing rules. I have to admit I have gone back to DBA for my games. Seems to flow a bit better and requires less brain power! Thanks Cromwell. I’ll probably still pick up a hard copy of Maximilian if ever I see one - just for interest. Thanks again, Geoff

I ordered the MAXIMILIAN rules from Black Hat yesterday and they arrived this morning! Very good service. Read through them and tried a quick game. Highly impressed. Need to study them some more as I am sure I got some things wrong. My figures are 6mm based for 15mm but the movement distances and ranges seem a bit excessive so I am thinking of lowering them a bit. Cromwell - did you get chance to play with investigate MAXIMILIAN any further? If so, what are the differences between Maximilian and standard DBA? What, if anything, makes these rules more “period specific” for the Italian Wars? The rules seem to be available from Wargames Vault as a download but, I must admit, I do like the feel of a hard copy printed ruleset. Cheers, Geoff

The Scandinavians join the rest of the late medieval collection. Originally, I had planned to do a Turkic army, but after further decided the two commands would be perfect for the Khanate of Kazan, worthy opponents for the Russians. The bland offering among the Golden Horde & Successors (IV/47) will be augmented with goodies from the DBMM list. You might find some suitable figures in the M.Y. Miniatures “Conquest of Siberia” range. They’re lovely figures. Regards, Geoff

Hills

Hi
I'm currently making some "difficult hills" by adding boulders/ rock faces etc to some polystyrene hills that I have already (the one's that you can buy to sit on 2' x 2' flocked tiles if you know them)
According to the Purple book hills must slope upwards to a ridge line...
How do people interpret this?
Do you mark a single line on the hill?
Or, since my hills all have a plateau on top, is it OK to consider the point where the hill stops and the plateau begins as a ridge line? (just like the contour would be on a map)
Thanks everyone??
CW
It’s a moot point.....you may find there are many and varied answers to this one... 😶 One of my favourite episodes of Friends has Joey explaining that something is actually a “moo” point. Geoff

Thanks for the heads up! Picked up e-book "Armies of the Italian Warts" for £5. Bargain! A very useful book as well. Ha ha. A Freudian slip if ever I saw one. Cromwell and a book on warts. How apt. Geoff

A different war, many centuries later and on a different continent entirely. July 1861 saw Thomas J Jackson’s Virginian Brigade at the First Battle of Bull Run. In this battle Jackson and his troops gained the nickname Stonewall. No-one suggests Jackson and his troops were secured behind any sort of actual physical defensive barrier of stone, rather the nickname is a metaphor.
My gut feeling is that the “chained cavalry” is likewise a metaphor to suggest the cavalry were strong and resolute in fighting against their foes. As Cromwell suggests, tying horses together would be a recipe for disaster...

So at least it gives a reasonably realistic game. Excellent. Please post more pics if you get chance 😀

I had time today to try out the DBA WW2 rules kindly forwarded to me by hammurabi70. I have to say they are just what I was looking for. Plays fast and gives satisfying results. That sounds good Cromwell. I see you have some 2mm WW2 images on your website. Are those old/previous images, or images of “this” game? I’m curious to see the “look” of a DBA WW2 game, as I’m not sure how the elements would group together in a realistic manner. Keep safe & take care, Geoff
