Inspired by a comment by "elliesdad" on another thread about Tin Soldier Miniatures, I wandered over to their site. I've never painted any of their figures. The pics on their site looked okay, but none of the ranges piqued my interest...until I saw their Abyssinians. Passing on the rifle-armed figures, of course, I ordered figures for II/62b Abyssinians. Seems a LH (Gen) element with a couple of these figures would be rather exotic looking. Only problem: A paucity of opponents. Anyone make Christian Nubians? --Yeah, didn't think so. Paul - Fighting15s also make Abyssinians in their (ex-Gladiator Games) Colonial range. They should add some variety: fighting15s.com/product-category/gladiator-miniatures/colonials/?v=79cba1185463Good luck, Geoff

Tin Soldier miniatures do have a certain charm about them (much like Mikes Models figures). I don't want to hijack "jim1973's" thread, but I gotta ask myself: If Tin Soldier minis have a charm like Mikes Models, then why I have never bought or painted any??? Perhaps the types of Wargames miniature/figure sculpting styles a man likes are much like his preferences for the ladies. Not everyone likes the same and we all have our preferences. Tin Soldier do make some very nice miniatures - but I can see that they’re not necessarily to everyone’s taste. Cheers, Geoff

Syracusans? As a matter of fact... 😉 Excellent. Please can we see some pictures?

I must admit that Tin Soldier miniatures do have a certain charm about them (much like Mikes Models figures). Hopefully you have some Syracusans as opponents…

My reference was more to the nickname of Sheffield United - “the Blades”. Or as we call them down Hillsborough way - the Blunts! Although I also am from the blue half of the city it’s still a fact that they (SUFC) are in a higher division ☹️ And it’s not as if the Owls are likely to head “back up” through the dizzy heights of promotion. Enjoy football chit-chat anyway, what can we say about DBA wargaming…?

Perhaps we could have a “Sheffield United” fantasy football team? That way all the elements would be Blades. 😀 ? maori ? My reference was more to the nickname of Sheffield United - “the Blades”.

For images of both the plain, unpainted MDF figures and Steve J’s well painted MDF Napoleonics see wwiiwargaming.blogspot.com/search?q=MDF Whilst I don’t think I’d go “all in” with MDF I do think it is something to try out for a small scale project. Cheers, Geoff

Why, oh why, oh why… in the film didn’t they simply just say “ oh, yeah. Spartacus? Errrr… that’s his body over there. That one with the head severed and bashed in beyond all recognition. Errrr…. can we go now?” It might’ve worked.
But I suspect not.

Yeah, I went to Partizan today, with my daughter’s fiancé. I’m trying to tempt him away from the grasp of Games Workshop and onto the virtuous path that is historical wargaming. 😀
It was a nice, enjoyable day out. I bought plenty of books and a few old rule sets. The show didn’t seem too busy but I suppose we gotta start things relatively slowly. FWIW the last wargames show I went to was also at Newark. That was Hammerhead, back in March 2020. Sooooooo long ago.
Anyhow, Partizan today was a nice, gentle show to ease my wallet back into the hobby. It’s always good to checkout figures in person, rather than risk mail order. It’s good to see the various demonstration games to see if there are any other rules sets/periods to there to tempt me. I would also have been tempted by a chip butty, but the lengthy queues for food & drinks meant we preferred browsing purchases & checking out games rather than loading up on calories.
Hammerhead is already “in my diary” - 5 March 2022.

Thanks y’all.
Paul - TLAR… I’d probably settle for the figures just not looking wrong (so fairly generic southeast Asian warriors maybe bare chested, maybe in a simple jacket and either in loincloth or trousers (quite short?).
Lesp1964 - thanks for the tip. I’d entirely overlooked these fellas.
Haardrada - I have some Outpost figures in my lead mountain. Exactly where in the lead mountain is another issue. I do have some Grumpy figures too - I’d forgotten about those.
Mark - PM sent. Thanks.
Cheers,
Geoff

Now, if only someone made medieval Vietnamese figures… I've suggested the range to Khurasan Miniatures and got a slightly curt reply that he already does! He feels the range could be built from his Sung Chinese range. He has a point, i.e., that the "Chinese influenced" figures could be drawn from his Sung range. The native Vietnamese militia figures in their distinctive, leather-covered caps, I think, remain problematic. //Paul Thanks Paul. I really, really do like the Khurasan Sung, especially the armoured troops. My main negative is that I always imagine (due to the heat) the Vietnamese warriors wouldn’t be so heavily armoured. That’s just my guess though. I did a quick check on Google, but didn’t find anything especially helpful. As ever, I do have more potential projects than will ever make it into the table-top in my lifetime. I’m probably more likely to go with a generic collection of spear or sword armed Chinese & assorted south-east Asian warriors suitable for all the way up to the Tonkin War. That way it’s only the musket/rifle armed troops and artillery that is additionally needed for the Tonkin War. Cheers, Geoff

Thanks Kaiphranos. That’s a serious amount of data crunching. Well done and thank you for all your efforts.
I guess the census/survey shows that between us, we DBA wargamers have sufficiently diverse interests that we are pretty much “covering all bases”. Either that or (like Pokemon) we “gotta collect ‘em all”. I suspect a significant number of us have a serious obsession with collecting - in my case it’s wargames figures, military books/magazines, true crime & crime fiction, comics, science fiction/fantasy etc…
Cheers,
Geoff

That’s impressive. Thanks for putting in all the effort.
