Our discussions about the improvement of Light Horse, competent troops and the roman testudo formation sparked a new idea I want to share with you here: the use of special Ancient Battle Formations. When flipping through an old WRG publication I found these and others: Infantry: square, testudo, wedge cavalry: wedge light horse: kantabrian circle, skythian formation Some illustrations concerning LH: Maybe we could add to every army list some specific information and thus add some historic and tactical flavour to these armies. (And by the way level up some LH heavy crap armies. ) And it looks splendid on the battlefield! These formations may use some PIPs to form and give in return certain oppurtunities or modifications when formed (or declared) in the combat phase. But certainly they should not create any superpowers. testudo: movement 1 BW in GG only, + 1 against Bw, can't be flanked or overlapped, can't follow up or recoil... skythian formation: +1 CF to every LH, no overlaps, immune to ZOCs... etc. Another possibility could be that e.g. Kn count only as Kn when forming a wedge, etc. What do you think? Any suggestions? link to online literature I like the idea but worry a little that the scale of DBA would make the formations use too many elements and unbalance things. For example in DBN an attack column of French Infantry is represented by two elements in column this looks a bit odd. I prefer the Command and Colours way of allowing the French infantry to roll an extra melee dice. But I think the idea is worth exploring a little more.

Blimey, you went to the same night clubs I did, That strange tribal ritual of dancing round a pile of handbags on the floor🤔 Then breaking off to visit the loo, always in groups of two or more. Then the worse part, handbags at 10 paces because Mildred dare wear the same dress as Edith😳 The entire group then staggering towards the Kebab House! The collective name for such a gathering “Doris’es” striking fear into all pimply faced adolescent boys and most of the local Constabulary,

I think one has to accept a certain amount of abstraction if the whole thing is not to bog down or look overly strange. Our models and terrain pieces, and to a degree the rules themselves are representations of the eras we are portraying.

One of my Christmas presents was the DVD of Michael Wood's "In the Footsteps of Alexander". I haven't watched it yet, but it will be interesting to see how well it has aged since it first aired. (Watching one of Michael Wood's original "In search of..." programmes - possibly the one on Athelstan - after a gap of forty years was a bit of a shock.) I have the book which I found fascinating even though it is not my era of interest. Not sure about the film from what’s been said though.

You could always try a dice rolling app! I tried that 🙁 Found an app, downloaded it onto my iPad, first time I needed to roll for pips I shook the iPad violently, spat on it and hurled the iPad across the table. On it’s way it wiped out an element of longbows and pike, before impacting the wall and disassembling itself into it’s component parts. Bloody technology 🤯

GW actually got me back into wargaming using their fantasy rules and figures. they then bought out Warhammer English Civil War, my favorite period. Try as hard as I could not like the rules. Something was not right.
My other go to period is the War of the Roses, and that was when I discovered DBA. Not looked at GW since.
