[slightly off topic rant following] And of course all of this points to the thing that makes DBA harder to sell. So much ambiguity in the midst of some of the most confusing uses of the English language that I have ever read. The number of times that myself and others have had to read the rules out loud slowly and then to interpret the writings. It is frustrating....and that is from someone who has been playing since V1.1 - so what does it look like to new comers? [rant done] I fully understand what you are saying here re: selling DBA to the unenlightened... If I can put it in perspective as I see it: I have SOME problems with SOME of the interpretations of SOME rules (& SOME of them are quite important, to me at least if not to others) But, overall, I have NEVER come across a set of rules that fits in with my understanding of history & wargames play that can hold a candle to DBA. All hail DBA! Also, as a community, we do exhibit an extraordinary tolerance (for this day & age) of each others quirks & heresies. We don't burn those who disagree - at least not yet... That is why I feel able to question so many things. I want to make sure everyone (especially me) has the best access to the best intrerptetation of the best rules. Just like any religion, without primary access to our god (oh PB, wherfore art thou!), we rely totally on the revalations of those who profess to know his will (the high priests if you will - Joe, I'm talkin' 'bout you gurl!) Joking aside, I am forever indebted to those who have answered my inane questions & brought me closer to enlightenment & hope they will continue to do so - preferaby with an udate to FAQ (Amen!) (Apologies, I think I can appreciate the work that this would entail & thank you for your service in advance) (BTW I was born in the UK so some of the above may, or may not, be hyperbole or sarcasm - there's no way of knowing, even for me, it's a disease...) Regards j PS Obadiah, I am with here here bro!

I lost track of the substance of this thread. The rule for Arable terrain is either a BUA or 2 Plough but not both. This was never written by Phil. "Or" means one thing and _not_ the other. I wrote to Sue about this a while back. I accept her stance on this
===================
Compulsory is either 1 BUA or 2 Plough, not both. However more plough is allowed under the optional terrain so he can have a BUA as the compulsory and the 2 plough as optional if he wants this. Sue From: Robert Beattie Sent: Friday, May 03, 2019 7:13 PM To: Sue Laflin Subject: Arable topography Hi, I know Phil is not answering hard questions for DBA, but perhaps he can review a very simple one.
ARABLE 1 BUA or 2 Plough. River, Difficult Hills, Gentle Hills, Woods, extra Plough, Enclosures, Road, Waterway, Scrub, Boggy.
One player insists that 1 BUA or 2 Plough really means you can take 1 BUA and 2 Plough. This is such a small issue but it is developing into a serious debate. Does Phil mean "EITHER 1 BUA or 2 Plough” or does he mean “1 BUA and/or 2 Plough" Thanks much,
keep in touch.

As played on the UK circuit it’s a choice between ......placing a BUA ....OR....placing 2 x plough. Not an option to place both items. The previous statement by Joe totally contradicts the understanding of this line of the rules by many (most?) of us.

Well Martin, there is always the possibility that we have all been getting it wrong and misinterpreting the Arable compulsory choices all along.
None of the other terrain regions have an entry that says “1 item or 2 other items”. Perhaps...just perhaps...the reason why the Arable compulsory choices have been worded differently from all the other regions is because they are supposed to be treated differently? (i.e. the 2 compulsory plough were meant to come as a pair for just a single solitary pick?)
Just a thought...

For what it’s worth, in all previous versions of DBA the Arable compulsory was a bit different to all others, IIRC....

Actually, the more I come to think about it, the more I realize that having a pair of compulsory Plough for a single pick makes no difference to how we have so far been selecting terrain. If you were say a defending Arable Pike army, and you wanted an open battlefield in order to rob your rough/bad going opponent of anywhere to hide in, then you would choose the 2 compulsory Plough. And it wouldn’t matter if the 2 Plough cost you one or two picks, as you’re not going to choose the BUA anyway. ---On the other hand--- If you were say a defending Spanish Iberian army, you'd want as much bad going as you can get, so you’d pick an Edifice BUA (as a bad going ‘Sacred Wood’ for instance), and wouldn’t bother to pick any Plough, because Plough is no good to you and might clog-up the placement of the terrain you do want. I can’t think of a single instance of when you would want both a BUA AND compulsory Plough together. (Except maybe for realistic or aesthetically pleasing reasons) So having 2 compulsory Plough as a single pick makes no difference to how we have already been doing it. Still, it doesn’t hurt to have it as a possibility, if you feel the need for it. Well, my new Welsh army debuted by invading their Saxon neighbour. He seems to have built a fort to reassure his local farmers and the Welsh did not want their "rambling" curtailed. Anyway, the Saxon put in a fort (garrisoned with Sp makes it reasonably difficult for the Welsh to take, occupying the Welsh general) and decided to put lots of big plough to try and fill the board, block less desirable terrain and allow his Spears freedom of movement. First PIP roll...1! The best made plans of mice and men... I like Joe's interpretation. Makes more sense that farms may be near towns, forts or temples. Seems sensible. I hope you incorporate this into your random terrain matrix stevie. Cheers Jim
