Nice Syrian camp Commiades. I've got some Essex Syrians waiting in the lead mountain.
I just finished the 2 x 3Ax I needed to complete my South Welsh army and the 10 x 3Pk needed to finish Owain Glyndŵr's North Welsh Army. Frustratingly for 2 closely related armies, III/19b and III/19c, the army lists don't share a single element - so a bit of a slog though 29 archers and 30 pikemen. More frustratingly - what I thought would be a quick army to paint needed a lot of highlighting work on the cloaks to make them stand out. I'll post photos when I can.

Anyway - back on topic. Baueda or FIB for LRR and possibly FIB for EIR. Is that where we are at? Corvus B have been discarded have they? I think so - if they don’t do a full range. I note no votes for Essex, Magister Militum or Irregular though. I’d have thought that they would have more support. I’m feeling some love for FIB but hate their packaging! Paddy

On a more serious note, I think there is some science that Britain has had warmer periods in the past, ancient and medieval. The Celts were happy enough to fight bare chested and the Romans grew some grapes in parts. Anybody more knowledgeable to inform us? Jim Have you ever been to a Newcastle night club in January? Not warmer - just harder!

So Baueda for Marian Romans. I tend to agree with that advice. My only concern with them is that they don’t make Numidian Elephants or bolt throwers. So which company matches Baueda best for those.
Corvus Belli for EIR. Can I stil get them? The Corvus Belli website seems to be full of Infinity stuff and nothing else!
Now I do like the FIB War and Empire figures. They are perhaps my favourite. My problem there is their packaging. I recon that even a basic EIR army without any options would need 5 packs at £55 and getting all the options would be twice that. I think I can justify FIB for Sarmations where it just needs 3 packs and some Generals - so £33 for an army but when I’d be paying twice that and discarding more figures than I use then I’m not convinced.

I thinking of doing a Roman Army. I have Polybians on the painting table but they got stalled. However, I’ m thinking of getting either a Late Republican or Early Imperial Army....it is just one of those must haves in the collection.
I’ve never looked for Romans before and assumed that most manufacturers would do a range, but not so!
Can anyone recommend the best DBA ranges for Late Republican or Early Imperial Roman.

Saving the best until last:
The Blades - I went for a mix of the black lion of Flanders and the white lion of Ghent on the shields.
Half of the Guildsmen (Pike) look at the flag sheets to see what guilds they come from.
The remainder of the Guildsmen.

For my 8th showcase army for the year I have a rather special one; IV/57 a, b & c Low Countries (Ghent). Rather special because I regard this army as a Fanaticus team effort. All the historical research for this army was done on the Forum by Goragrad and Timurilank with me greedily stealing all their links to flags, notes on uniforms, heraldry and army composition. Thanks guys! I hope I have made good use of your input. So about this army – it all started with the Alternative Armies ME1 Flemish HI Spearman figure, which I had used before in my Teutonic and Later Crusader armies. It is an excellent little figure, well-proportioned and takes paint well – so how nice to have a whole army of them. Then Goragrad and Timurilank gave me the excuse to do just that with a very colourful army with loads of flags…..what’s not to like! The figures are all from Alternative Armies. I bought the figures mail order in July and started painting them last month. So they are all new paints, except 3, which I reused from a Mediaeval German Army, but even then they got new tunics. They are mostly ME1 Flemish HI Spearman, peasants or Knights, which are MEC4 Frankish Knight 13thC which were the closest to the historical sources. Some conversion on the peasants to make them “Whitehoods,” basically a thin strip of foil wrapped into a hat shape round the end of a paintbrush and superglued into place. Wire pikes from Xyston are time consuming and fiddly – but worth it! The flags came from Timurilank’s suggested link www.krigsspil.dk/download/download_3.html
The historical accuracy of this army is pretty good, thanks to Goragrad and Timurilank’s guidance. A few minor issues to admit to. I rejected Goragrad’s advice about black or red pikes and opted for wood colour only because they looked better. The knights use heraldry taken from the Battle of the Golden Spurs, which Ghent didn’t participate in, this is because I couldn’t find any decent heraldry from Ghent. Also, a few minor heraldic mistakes on the guildsmen (which if anyone can spot I’ll admit to) and which I couldn’t be bothered to repaint. Finally there is the anachronism of my using the same core figures for the a, b & c armies. The core army is from about 1320 and I added extra guildsmen, an organ gun and halberdiers so it can play out to 1478…but in 1478 the pikemen would look radically different. Overall I love the look of this army. It is so colourful with the red and yellow tunics and the predominately red shields and flags and the uniform look of the army is appealing. I think the whitehoods look great – and add a talking point to the army. The plancon men (both 4Bd and 3Bd options) are also unusual and it is my first organ gun. I really enjoyed painting it – so much so that were I ever to di a BBDAB army I’d add to this with another, probably the red and white quarters of Damme. I have no idea how this army will fight as it has yet to get onto the table but with an aggression of 0 it’ll normally fight on home ground . Given all the pike I suspect it’ll be hard to beat in the open. I can’t see why I’d want the 5Hd over more pike and if the gun gets placed in a good position it could do a lot of damage. Paul what are the stats for this army like?
So now some photos:
First the early option with the Knights, 7Hd and the 3Bd Plancon option.
Next the middle option with a Pike General, the White hoods, Organ gun and 4Bd Plancon.
Finally the late option, with lots of pike and the 4Bd Halberdier option.

I think it may be a false economy. So often I miss a figure here or there and so need to do a re-order and then while I’m ordering I’ll slip in a few more elements to change this Army into that one......and then I’ve always hankered after that Army...... and then it’s only £10 more to get free postage and you know that makes sense.

All my Indian chariots fro MM fit easily into 40 x 40 bases....even the 4 horse ones.
I must say I do like MM. The figures are on the small size (true 15s), the figures are slighter than others (probably more accurate but delicate), there is a slight lack of variety in poses and some of the horses have longer necks than I would like.
BUT
They have a very comprehensive range, they are historically accurate (even if that makes cavalry xystons unmanageably long), they paint up well, they are a family run company with a good ethos and time to chat at shows, they are packaged to be DBA friendly and minimise waste (unlike OG and FIB), I’ve never not been able to pin a breakage and they have good customer service. As a result most of my Classical armies are MM.
