Still doesn't ring true with me. Do we really think there would be effective shooting of ANY sort at the ranges we're considering while inside any blocking terrain? If you ever stood in a wood and threw a rock you'd be well aware that it don't go too far before a tree intervenes with its trajectory. Wouldn't recommend (or admit to) trying this in a hamlet 😶 ... or in a glasshouse! It's a game mechanic - I tend to think of neither unit being of well formed ranks when in woods. That's the penalty for some troops come from while Aux,Wb and PS etc. are not impacted as they don't rely that strictly on formed bodies up anyways. So the archers get some ranged 'larger than skirmish' distant power in woods. I never had much of an issue with it in thinking this way. It helps that I think of woods not not deep virgin forest but broken tree clumps of trees and lightly wooded area's as it's around where armies are moving. Impactful but not wilderness.

No problem. Everything on my blog that I paint is varnished - either with the 2 coat technique or just WN matte. As I mention a light coat of olive oil get rid of cloudiness if you ever get it. But avoid thick coats of paint on - you don't need it.
I do need to get back to Ancients/DBA painting...been spending a lot of time on WW2 this year though and board game figures.

I use water based varnish, which I paint on. I'm not an expert painter (and not that artistically talented but I try...) but I find that the little effort of varnish helps hold the work I do. Spray on work BUT is prone to clouding issues depending on weather and humidity. Living in Canada these days means I either kill myself with the fumes inside or spray varnish for a couple of week in the year - as it's either too hot, cold or humid to always come out right... So paint on varnish is safer. For general gaming a Windsor Newton or similar matte varnish will work fine. Use the stuff you don't have to dilute. Just brush it on lightly and make sure it does not pool. Thick coats don't help and may in the end spoil your paint result. I created an article on this on my blog a few years ago on varnishing after a few people asked. You can see it here: mellis1644.wordpress.com/2011/09/18/my-guide-for-varnishing-models/

I was thinking about redoing my WotR army, this led me to three of my four grandparents originated we think in the Yorkshire/Lancashire areas. To add to that it led on to cricket, I seem to remember that at one time the Yorkshire cricket club would only use players born? in Yorkshire. This caused more than one problem over whether a player came from Yorkshire or Lancashire. David Constable Yorkshire was the only cricket team to hold the born in the county item and that did not cause too much issue. That was till 1992. Then you had to be either educated or born in the country - which caused a few issues and the rules were dropped, I think around 2001. These rules did put them at a significant disadvantage when all the other teams had 'Johnny foreigner' players - who were more skilled players on their teams. <sigh> Still got the best record in country cricket though I believe. P.S. I seem to remember one of the weird facts about the war of the Roses is that the House of York had more land in what is modern Lancaster than the House of Lancaster, and vice versa during the wars.

I am just glad to be a Yorkshire man, we love everyone else as we know you must be a little upset about not being a Yorkshire man. 'Never ask a man if he comes from Yorkshire. If he does, he will tell you without asking. If he does not, why humiliate him?'" Still very true to this day... Oh and yes another Yorkshireman.

I have Old Glory 15mm Romano-brits in the pile to be painted... Not sure what Essex code would work but I'm sure they will have a late roman/dark age fig or two which would work

The WRG feudal and medieval army books (old but still useful I find) have them with small shields - and lets be honest the name schiltron sort of implies a shield, at least in the early days. It's hard to have a shield wall (which is what it means I believe) without a shield... the name likely may stuck when shields were less used but still. The common troops were often poor as well so armor would be rare for these guys. Thus, I suspect a shield might have been easier to get (and supply to them) for a bit of protection - thus used for longer than some think.
So I suspect the use of shields did drop off as better amour was available but you might get some shield still in use in later times. After all is it better to be 'unfashionable' and carry a shield or just go to battle in your normal cloths for protection...

Unfortunately, being a non traditional website the wayback machine got a couple of copies but only of the frontage. So yes no easy access to that info even through that system.

I think Bob is correct. Rear Support is not a subset of Close Combat but a distinct condition. So rules for Close Combat do not automatically apply. Not sure this was Phil's intention but it seems to be the letter of the law. Thanks for the question. TomT Thats how we play it...Not sure if it's correct but how we interpreted the rules.

Ha I changed camp to baggage as I though that as the right term - no rules with me here. I understand that the camp followers on the base can't leave but can I replace them with another unit in a game? ie. as an actual example. I have a camp with modeled followers on the camp base. During the game things don't go well so I want to move a unit of Ps into the camp to get the camp defense bonus. Can I do that or is the fact that the camp already has camp followers followers on the base mean it is full and can;t have another unit in it?

So we had an odd circumstance happen in a game, which I'm not sure of so thought I'd ask. If the army baggage is garrisoned by camp followers (modeled on the base so usable to leave the baggage area), can a different friendly element enter the baggage during the game? Obviously, if the baggage is empty it can do so. But camp followers don't count as an element for the army or if they die in V3. Also a real element starting an army baggage replaces the camp follower. So, what about moving into/through a baggage area if the camp followers are present. Does the real element just replace/displace the camp followers, or is the camp full - meaning they can't enter the camp? Either way this did not really effect our game but we checked the rules and could not find any clear statement on this point. So I thought I would ask here.

again just a single voice but I must admit I'd generally be against a V3.1 unless there are real good reasons for it. As an occasional tourney player and one of the regulars in our group here we generally don't see any of the issues been reported here as major concerns. DBA armies are not all equal and neither are all the troops types in them. Blade and knight being the 'kings of battle' actual reflects my very high level of the generalities of battle as well.
It's taken this long to get V3 played regularly and we have lost players along the way to other systems. The swap from V2.x was a big one and getting the rules right between versions is a challenge at times. Also, the rules are not the easiest to get hold of either as no local stores stock them. Adding a minor version is not likely to help that or improve our understandings.
Nothing nasty but it seems like all these could be covered by 'house rules' to me if there are aspects of the rules that your specific group would like to change for their regular play.

Spears are the hardest troop to use in the armies you have. They have no easy/obvious match up's for targeted opposing troops- other than the stand off vs. the other spears. So to deal with them my suggestion would be use them as the core of your 'battle line' aka bait to bring your oppoents forces close. Try to bring their into a killing zone, where your other troops can hit their flanks and deal with them. You don't want to use them too aggressive but in this role they have value. Defending good going from hills etc. is another use depending on terrain hugging PS. Oh and yes this is what I like about DBA - these types of challenges.
