I got a rescue a year plus ago and she limits my time at the painting desk to an hour or so at a time. She comes down and wants attention after that. Still not complaining.

Well the title say it all. A year or two ago I started painting some Dark Age models for DBA armies - Saxon, Vikings, Normans, Anglo-Danes etc. That grew to be for other rules such as ADLG and when replacing 28mm figs with a single base, rules like PeterPig's Viking and Dux Brit from Too Fat Lardies. At the end of 2021 I reviewed my Dark Age collection. It might have got a little large now... And sadly my post this week will show I added another set of bases... I really like the Dark Are period and I have finally started on painting my Dark Age figures which have been lurking in the lead pile - Saxon's Vikings etc that I have collected over the years. I have various DBA army packs as well still to attack. As the saying goes 'mistakes may have happened...' especially over 20 years of buying these and not painting them. I may have a few more than I need for DBA but I'm sure I'll find a use. Below are a few sets I have painted so far. Blades: Elite blades - aka ones with the same shields so likely commanders etc. Spears: A lot more are coming and will be on mellis1644.wordpress.com/ soon. if you want to see more photo's check out the link. I think I should have loads for Dark Age DBA armies soon.

I tend to paint cloths and stuff first - including chainmail etc if the models have them, and then dark wash those (and even touch up/highlight) if needed. Then I'll do lighter flesh and then wash.highlight those,

Well have I done figures for all the 3 various options for the Ancient Spanish Army's in V3 and now have just finished the fort (from Baueda) for them all to defend. The kit made a bigger fort than i allowed for DBA but the basic corners and gate work out to be perfect for a large camp. Thanks for the complements. I try with my painting but I would love it to be better, but it it what it is. I think over the 20+ years I have been painting I am getting slowly better... I hope. As an aside, I do think our hobby us both blessed and cursed by the great painters. They are inspiring etc but can be off putting for the vast majority of us who are not able to achieve to the stunning painting levels. I have very little artistic talent but find it relaxing. I also know many painters whose output is very low due to their ability which means they work to do the best quality work all the time. That's one of the reasons I have a painting blog - to show that decent to good tabletop standards are not awful and perfectly acceptable. It's a hobby after all and I spend more time painting than playing. I find painting relaxing one of the 'zen' things about it is the only person who has t be happy with the painting results is yourself. Anyway back to the great work from other I hope. Mark

After a long gap I am back painting 15mm armies for DBA - and other ancient games. I'm not the best painter but try. This is not the best army out there - would be better if they did not have arable terrain but heck it works. I did a couple of warring states last year, but just finished Ancient Spanish - the Iberian version. I include a couple of shots here. First the full army shot with all the options: The Ax4 group - the 'heavies': and some skirmishers: You can see more pictures on my blog here: mellis1644.wordpress.com/2018/12/30/ancient-spanish-iberian-dba-ii-39a-army/

You used to be able to move so that the rear of your unit touched the rear of an opponents element. Just a corner overlap would be enough as you then completely blocked recoils. (That no longer is a legal move - which stopped the tactic to my memory). Then, just as now, if you won the combat the opposing element would die on a recoil.
Now, you can move to a position to change it - but basically you would need to win 2 fights and that's harder. It's still possible but not such a cheesy way of killing an opponent.

Yeah Howard does most of the con's in the area. There is a Toronto Facebook and google hangout/email list for meet ups. If you are ever in the city we do DBA in one of the stores the first Wednesday of the Month - depending on peoples real lives etc but we vary between 2 and 8 players for that.

Thanks. That's useful and the bigger work is making the lists work - but you can do that on a case by case basis.

I have participated in the previous KS'ers and have to say I have been impressed on the figs. Basically as stated it a pre-order at a discount but as I play various larger ancient games as well as DBA the number of figs is less of an issue for me. Also, some armies this is less of an issue than for others. Overall, I have been very impressed with the toys and if you want decent figs for the period these are really nice.

DBR had a 100 its version which was quite like DBA in size but had points. I think DBMM had something similar (never played that though). The DBR system was quite a good system and made for some interesting matchup. It avoided the 'all weak skirmisher' type armies being significantly out powered by them having a few more elements. Point systems are not perfect but can help in this type of thing.
