This is the original Toronto - your one is named after the Ontario one as I understand it. The name is a corruption of a native American Indian name after all.

Hi all. Asked this before on the other forum, but no harm etc. Anybody around Barnsley? Not really interested in clubs yet: some bad experiences in the past. I used to be 30+ years ago - and still a Barnsley football fan.

Love of history keeps me flitting from period to period and war-games allow me an excuse to get and paint toys around that. I'd likely do that even if I did not game for the 'zen of painting' as someone called it once. I'm just not that great at it...
I do really like the gaming and social aspects though and they are very important items in the hobby. Thats why I play nearly as many board games (many with figs) as old style war games these days it seems.

Hey I may have been right, even though I have not read the rules in quite a while. I would play that it purses up to what it can, but as it can't make legal contact stops just short of the art.

I'm not up on V3 but is that a legal combat contact? I would have thought they just stop a tiny bit before the art.

Err... the latest activity is always a bit of a mess in Wiki's. This is a feed of all the pages changed and will always be updated with changes. It's actually a good thing as it shows readers that things are changing/being added. No change usually equals a dead wiki - or one which is perfect which its be honest is rare...
Just my 2 cents.

I'm a big fan of the series and they do give good games. You can even use DBx bases for Pikemans lament - I'm using 4 bases for 12 figure units and 2 bases for 6 figure units. Each base has 3 'hits' - you just mark 2 and the 3rd removes a base. With 15mm figs I just swap inches for cm's - although that's not really required if you don't want too. Doing this also allows Pike to be suitably deep - 4 bases deep while the shot and mounted are 2 bases wide.
For Fantasy the Dragon Rampant game is a great little game as well and The men who would be kings is a great little game for colonial bashes. Each has the same basic concepts but enough differences to give a different feel for the period.

If you are doing 6mm you may want to look at Baccus for some of the camp items. Their terrain items are nice and make that an easier aspect.

6mm on normal 25mm bases as you mention work fine. I have done exactly as you plan. To be honest just don't put too many figs on them as it defeats the overall look IMO. You can make the bases scenic and have really nice results with a reasonable number of figs. The less organized forces especially should not have lines of ranks etc like are seen in later wars. The only challenge can be to differentiate commanders at times. I have tried various tricks with this as using purely the number of figs on a base is hard to always keep track of in a game. I also created some separate commander bases so I can use these for other games as well - such as Dux Bellorum & Sword and Spear. I have completed several 'fall of rome armies in the British isles' - so Romano-Brits, Saxons, Picts etc. You can see them on my blog: mellis1644.wordpress.com/category/6mm/ - you'll have to skip the other 6mm projects/posts though as these were done a year or so ago. Here are a few pictures. First some British Chariots: Then some Romano-British infantry: And then some Barbarian infantry - spears/blades here - if you check my blog I did ones which look a lot more random for war bands: A shot of the various mounted Pict/Barbarian forces - where you can see the light (front) vs. medium (middle) vs. heavy (at the back) cav as well as some foot skirmishers. Overall this works but in the end the larger table means they get less play for DBA than my 15mm armies.

The only success I have had with Warband vs heavy foot is as you did - ensure that you divide the battle into smaller area's. Then win in one of more of the area's with QK's, overlaps etc- some good luck at the right time is still required for this to work though. Speed/movement and terrain are the war bands friend in this type of matchup. The heavy foot want a straight one on one battle line as although there are quick kills the odds are in their favor over time with overlaps etc.

My comment was from the mapping of troops to DBA-RRR, as takes it lead from DBR there can be issues. Note this is from memory as well, so might be wrong now. As background, DBR has 4 types of pistols. Pistols(i) are inferior but can shoot (poorly) at range. They tend to map to Cav in DBA-RRR style games - they are the typical caracoling pistol troops. Unfortunately, in DBR this clarification also covers just poor mounted troops - for example many early ECW troops who did not caracole but just meet opposing horse at a near standstill and tried to fire pistols at blank range before hand to hand. This was a bad idea historically and never really worked well for them... For the game mapping both troops to one type IMO was mistake as it causes issues. As background DBR Pi(f) hard charging troops in DBA-RRR often map to knights. DBR Pi(o) and DBR Pi(s) troops often map to DBA-RRR pistols troop types. These days the DBR Pi(s) likely would map in DBA-RRR to whatever Cataphracts are. The overloading of DBR(i) troop type causes issues as here are really at least 2 types of combat being reflected in that one figure type. What I was suggesting is if in your DBA-RRR games you feel you have enough justification for the difference you could use the caracoling horse as Cav and maybe the better hand to hand units as Pistols vs. Cav. Hope this helps

We do the same. The only draws come from running out of time - which is rare in our games. We have even had games carry on at 5-5 with vexing dual loss in a bound.

Many thanks for your reply Tony. I can see what you mean... yet I'm still wondering how do we distinguish between say Henry of Navarre's later Huguenot "Miller" pistoleers post 1576 (and Dutch cuirassiers etc) who charged (trotted) to contact with pistol & sword compared with German mercenary reiters, even later ones who remain graded Pi(I) and as far as I can see, with the exception of couple of inspired occasions, still used the caracole thus avoiding contact? Oman and other writers all seem to suggest they were considered inferior in quality and Barker continues that assumption in the DBR lists. Therein lies my quandary - or is the difference too marginal to matter? From my reading I'm not sure it is. Fully appreciate a revision in line with DBA 3.0 requires time which may be in short supply. :-) I'm quite happy for the time being continuing with RRR as per 2.2 - perhaps dare I say with a house rule for the above issue. Mark For your own games you could make the 'totting chargers' Pistols vs. Cav for the usual caracole tactics. It is likely a little generous but the DBR pistols(i) included a wide range of troops and tactics - too wide really. It really depends on whether you think they deserve that difference, as after all these are your games as much as anything else. The lists are far from gospel on such things - often there is a fairly large degree of interpretation.

I have a load of ECW figs which were originally painted for DBR but one of my issues with V2 of the rules as the tenancy to have huge lines of troops vs. more units on the table. The table often does not look very much like an ECW battle - unless players purposely try to play that way.
So that and lack of local people playing in the end I have moved away from DBR onto other rules such as FOG:R and Pike and Shotte etc. I like the idea of DBR but the execution is not as great as it could be. I can teach and play a decent game of Pike and Shotte with a load of figs on the table much quicker than DBR.
