Didnt have time to make a video battle report this time, but heres a link to a blog post about my latest 6mm Big Base DBA game, this time with a custom Samnite+Gaul list inspired by the Battle of Sentinum in 295BC Heres the link: shrimplyamazing.blogspot.com/2023/12/dba-6mm-samnites-and-gauls-vs-polybian.htmlI used the +1 CF vs Foot for 4Ax and it felt a lot better for the samnite infantry. Have a great day! Please talk us through your playing surface… All looks very pretty.

Just finished David C Douglas’ 1964 “William the Conqueror”. A product of its time, but very erudite and informative. It made me appreciate how accurate and well done David Churchill’s fictional trilogy on the subject is….
Now on to Adrian Goldsworthy’s “The Wall”. Ferox back in home territory 😀

For my pennorth, yes, the city or camp, and hence any elements within, are affected by an external enemy’s threat zone. Effectively the enemy are at the gates, or close enough, so the occupants shut themselves in and May no longer flee… After all if the city is in the enemy deployment zone, enemy cannot start within a base width, so a swift flee could be performed…

Query from a recent game… BUA rules, page 7:- 1 ) If the garrison is destroyed, any one of the assaulting enemy elements… occupies the city and sacks it, until PIP score of 5 or 6’ … + ……’ Prior to that the sacking element does not get a garrison tactical factor…’. 2 ) Three lines later…’If the denizens…are destroyed and it is left unoccupied or vacated, either side can move into it or through it without combat’… + …’An appropriate enemy element immediately becomes a garrison on moving into it.’ Query - Side A attacks side B’s city, kills the defending denizens, captures it and sends in an element, who commences sacking the city. Side B sends an element which then attacks the sacking element, and destroys it. DOES IT MOVE IN? ie like an assaulting element which has destroyed a defending ‘garrison or denizens’, effectively getting a free move into the city? Per wording/R.A.W. the sacking defender in this case was neither ‘garrison’ nor ‘denizens’, so technically no. Perhaps the wording might have been intended to let the secondary attacker leap the walls in the same way? Otherwise, an attacker who destroys a sacking defender might be told he a) has to enter or leave the city via a gateway (as suggested in the FAQs)? and b) has to wait til his next turn before he does so [and in the meantime another opponent might occupy that empty city, per point 2.] Answers in a postcard………… I might argue that the sacking element is garrisoning, it just does not get the tactical factor until it has finished sacking, so side B having destroyed the sacking element moves in…

…and Ian Pain won both the Slayer prize, having seen 42 elements destroyed in his 6 games, and ( by popular vote) the Best Presented Army, Later Vedic Indians.
Thank you all for making it such a convivial event to run…and thank you for all the help clearing up…we were praised for the cleanliness of the hall!
And sorry…I had not realised the coffee was decaffeinated!

Right now I started with W.S. Churchill: A History of the English Speaking Peoples. Very entertaining and even encouraging. “…amidst a plethora of well-meant platitudes…”….great language!

The III/40c Viking Leidang army list contains the phrase “6 x boendr (4Bd or in Finland 3Ax)”. Does this mean “4Bd/3Ax” or “4Bd or 3Ax?” On the face of it it uses the word or which implies 4Bd or 3Ax (i.e. any mixture) but you can’t be part in Finland and part outside can you? Thus it also seems to be saying 4Bd/3Ax (i.e. either not both.) So can someone remind me whether or in the text of an army list means “or” as on page 31 (which is equivalent to the maths operator AND) OR whether it means “/“ (which is equivalent to the maths operator XOR.) “Or between 2 codes or prefix numbers directs that any mixture of those elements can be used.” I think the intent is that 6 x 4Bd are used, unless the army is in Finland, where any combination of 4Bd and 3Ax may be used…

Polite fyi, Myers = father son combo……
The Romans had Numidian allies… Zama.
Hannibal (Cv), 2 x El, 1 x LH, 3 x Sp, 1 x 4Ax, 2 x 4Wb, 2 x Ps
Scipio (Cv), 2 x 4Bd, 2 x 4Ax, 2 x Sp, 2 x Ps with Massinissa (Cv), 2 x LH
Hannibal defended all 3 times. Narrow waterway, edifice and dunes.
First game, Polybians under Diades’ (Myers senior) control 1-0 up at “time”. Scipio never rolled more than 3 PIPs all game… Second game Hannibal’s (Diades) littoral landing won amongst the dunes. Third game saw Roman (Paddy) Allied Numidian light horse in against the elephants…the elephants were triumphant, with ensuing mayhem.
2-0 to Hannibal!
My day also contained an excellent Cunaxa(?)..Later Achaemenid Persian civil war…horde held the enemy centre up forever allowing the left to win before opposition mounted could reach the refused right.
Sea-people invading Achaea, where my Littoral landing eventually won the day…an excellent pairing…4-3.
and War of the Roses clash, where my Yorkists got their blades amongst enemy missile troops first, but were not effective enough…the Lancastrians when they hit home turned the tables for victory.

Well done to the Bakewell Tarts. Well at least you didn't call us Bakewell Puddings! Simon The one I had for lunch was delicious… Thank you Simon for another fun, efficient, well-run event. DBA works best with historical matches, for sure, so this is an excellent format. As ever, there were situations in games that are not simple to resolve, especially whilst trying to finish a game in a fixed time. Always something to learn. I need a memory upgrade and a processor upgrade too.. I suspect the motherboard is incompatible! Thank you to all for such a friendly-spirited day.
