Ohh I have a question. Say you have a 2 deep Wb that keeps pursuing an element of Ax (because they are stupid and that's what they do) and it still has the Ax to it's front as well as 2 side contacts to the rear element (due to punching through the line. 2 more elements have no joined the Ax to offer side support, sooooo is this a -4 to the Wb due to 2 side edge contacts and 2 corner to corner or is there a max you can have? I think this situation is covered by the latest FAQ, which can be found here:- ancientwargaming.files.wordpress.com/2022/10/dba_faq_q4_2022_final.pdf Q: My opponent is facing my line of Blades with a Pike block. I moved another element into side-to-side contact with the rear Pike. A flank contact against a supporting Pike counts as a flank contact against the front element. Does my side-to-side contact against the rear Pike element count as an overlap? A: No. (So much for Phil Barker (bless him) always being right. He is a genius when it comes to thinking up rules… …but is not very good at writing them and conveying meaning. Hence the strange obscure language known as ‘Barkerese’…)

I think Barkerese is used purposefully to counter the interpretation and meaning of the rules (as I can't believe any academic would write in such a way) the only problem is only PB can speak it fluently.

I have another question. Now I'm sure I saw this somewhere, but can't remember where To me combat is simultaneous ie you can't get any advantage from cherry picking which combat to do and therefore getting an advantage on corner to corner overlaps until the next round. But I've not seen anyone play this way

Combat is not simultaneous and the order in which you choose to fight your combats has important repercussions. Eg an element may be made to recoil and then end up providing overlap on an enemy unit.
Cheers

It was just Phil's way. I discussed with him many times working on "quirks" to his style. He did not mean to be obscure but ideas poured out him in no particular order and that is how he wrote the rules. Often the general rule would be so firmly in his mind that he immediacy jumped to the exceptions often with out mentioning the general rule which could only be deduced by elimination of the exceptions. But feat not we are doing a rewrite of the rules in a "popular" style first for High Fantasy and then we hope across all DBX platforms. Its headed for Beta testing (Alpha nearing completion) and should be out in '24 (early we hope). TomT

Just to get it right: Under which circumstances will 2 units one behind the other be destroyed in normal combat outcome?
I'll start with these:
o El recoiling into El o a fighting and a supporting unit if attacked succesfully in front and flank contact
...
How many more?

Yes, there are a few more Brian.
Recoiling Obstacles Recoiling or pushed back elements halt if they meet any of the following:- Troops they cannot pass through, push back, or trample. Terrain they cannot pass through, a table edge, or a City/Fort/Camp. Troops forced to move back are destroyed if already in contact with any of these.

But only the front element is destroyed, not both.

I found another one concerning Elephants and Scythed Chariots:
If a friendly or enemy element prevents further movement by fleeing Elephants or Scythed Chariots, both elements are destroyed.

Ah, this is another tricky one.
Recoiling on page 12, fourth paragraph, says:- “If the recoiling element is Elephants, all friends or enemy met (that are not in a BUA or Camp) are destroyed.”
And Fleeing on page 12, eighth paragraph, says:- “If a friendly or enemy element prevents further movement by fleeing Elephants or Scythed Chariots, both elements are destroyed.”
However, Interpenetration on page 9 says:- “If making a tactical move or fleeing, a mounted element can pass through friendly Psiloi…”
Therefore, friendly Psiloi do not prevent movement by fleeing friendly El and SCh. The Psiloi are simply passed through without suffering any harm.

Combat outcome front base-to-base against a group. Pretty sure there is one, though I can't find it?

Combat outcome front base-to-base against a group. Pretty sure there is one, though I can't find it? Ça depend. Which group? Any overlaps? A picture might be useful...

Combat outcome front base-to-base against a group. Pretty sure there is one, though I can't find it? Could you be thinking of DBA 2.2 and HoTT 2.1?… …where doubling a front rank element also destroys the rear supporting troops? This is not the case in DBA 3.0.

Not sure. I just have a vague recollection of a column being destroyed, but can't remember the detail (if there are any)
