Awaiting the delivery of figures, I decided the Franks should flex their sword arms. The campaigns of Clovis are interesting as he meets a variety of enemies. The Franks also change lists from an early period to the Merovingian one in 496. The list can be read at the blog and reports with photos will be added. dbagora.blogspot.com/2024/03/the-reign-of-chlodovech-481-511.html

My view is split on this, ergo the query.
Second element (4Wb) is of a type capable of supporting the first in close combat, a general on foot (4Wb). Therefore, closing ranks would seem logical.
One could also argue, the 10mm space represents horses and their handlers moving toward the rear in that bound.

A query to Fanatici, an Alamanni general (Cv//4Wb) has a second warband element directly behind in contact forming a column.
Dismounting, does the second element automatically close the distance to remain in column or must the adjustment cost a pip?
How would you play this?

Grass and tufts were added today, completing the 28 elements of Franks.
With the addition of levies/militia spear, they will become Merovingian. A new order should arrive in two or three weeks for the above and figures for Lather Visigoths.

Fascinating presentation from the Histories Channel. Relatively short, 19.07 minutes, this covers their migration to the Pontic steppe to continue their favourite pastime of raiding. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSbvmj3pix0&list=WL&index=11A relatively new channel with a few gems.

Game evening tomorrow – Dark Ages. We have two Rus, an early Polish and Northern Slav. Random selection by card could produce a Rus civil war. We spent most of the evening was in conversation, but managed one game. Early Polish cavalry proved ineffective against the Rus shield wall. As the Poles floundered, Rus skirmishers turned their flank enabling a 4 – 2 victory.

Painting the final bits that will make Gothic/Frankish cavalry. One is to serve as CinC for the Franks.
Next, six draco standards for the two Frankish commands.

Placed an order with TimeCast for more Dark Age types.
These will serve as levies/spearmen/auxilia for the Later Visigothic, Merovingian and Patrician Roman.

We have brought this in as a change to the DBF rules, currently in Beta phase of development P …no chance that the LH destruction might be intentional/realistic? A deep swarm of LH who, in Close Combat, are doubled might accurately represent the front part of the element attempting to flee in severe disorder and they and possibly others being killed in the crush/mayhem which ensues [??]…perhaps. I have a similar view as Martin. From Troop Definitions on page 3: Light Horse“They typically fought by sending a constant stream of small parties to gallop past shooting several times at close range, then return to rest or change ponies while others took their turn. Armies with large numbers of horse archers could form up very deep, increasing the frequency of exchange and the effect of shooting, but on a dusty confused battlefield they could make evading a charge risky”. Therefore, on a score of twice as many, the second LH element show contempt for the cowards fleeing by standing their ground and prepare to shoot.

Thanks for the terrain links. I'm also interested in how you paint the figures. Basic colors followed by a wash? My big stumbling block has always been how long I take to paint figures, and am always interested in considering a quicker method which looks good on a compatible table. I have come to realize that what I value is the overall effect, from normal viewing distance during a game. I mix colours, as I have only 18 pots, 9 of which are used frequently. From a white undercoat, I begin with a dark colour (breeches or tunic or shield) and later bring a lighter shade or a contrasting colour in thin brush strokes. Photo 4 of 6 illustrates this. dbagora.blogspot.com/2020/06/north-africa-and-sicily-9th-11th-century.html
