Last played DBA over 20 years ago but found players at the club looking over V3 so tried it out. As a Parthian/Kushan enthusiast can someone explain why some Iranians (Graeco Bactrian) are 3Kn while others (Parthians and Kushans) are 4Kn? 1ngram, Welcome to the forum. To briefly answer your question, their fighting style and armament differ. The Iranian lancer can be found in Duncan Head’s Armies of the Macedonian and Punic War book, sourced from a Graeco-Bactrian silver dish. He is also equipped with a bow in addition to the lance. Nikonorov, Valerii; The Armies of Bactria 700 B.C. – 450 A.D mentions Alexander enlarged his elite companion cavalry with Bactrian, Sogdian and Iranian cavalrymen. This would suggest fighting styles compatible with the companion cavalry. I enjoy using the Graeco-Bactrian and have two so both options can be used, an all cavalry force, the other fielding an assortment of infantry.

Not quite sure that applies to all pike, timurilank. Definitely the manner used by Alexander and Successors, but they appear also to have been also a 'mowing machine' running over units unable to flank or avoid them in a number of battles. Although with the Swiss, as has been noted, the speed of their advance was a major factor in their success. Goragrad,
Correct, the option would not apply to all pike formations. Our late 15th c. historical scenarios, this proved a useful option to distinguish mercenaries (4Pk) from pike armed retainers (7Hd). Medieval German IV/13d represents the Imperial army and as a consequence, it omits the diversity of city, clerical or feudal forces. We modified the sub-list to reflect the above differences to play out the conflicts within the Holy Roman Empire. Some do include Heerban pikemen (7Hd). Recommend
Germany in the Later Middle Ages, Du Boulay War in the Middle Ages, Philippe Contamine Ordnung für grosse Heere und Schlacten, Philipp von Seldeneck, fought at Seckenheim (1465) and wrote a tactical treatise.

Two commands of later Armenian are done. Twelve elements of Gallo-Roman spearmen/auxilia, done.
Today, six elements of Gothic heavy cavalry are finished. These fill the gaps among the armies and enemies of the Patrician era.
This week terrain pieces are next in the queue. Next week, the WOTR project begins.

Perhaps this problem can only be sorted by stricter deployment rules and command distances limitations?Shorter battle lines would go some way to solving the extended line enveloping the double elements issue and you may even see some historical formations. yep, limiting the command range was something I have mentioned also. Someone here (can’t remember who) said that they played 24 elements on a side with one die for pips and that forced them to maneuver in a three-division system like medieval battles often had. It is, to some degree, an advantage for Pike to always move in one big block. Maybe allow Pike to line up with other Pike for no pip cost? That would advantage Pike more in the shoving match with Blade and allow your other elements, like Companions, to strike the decisive blow while the side with Blades is spending all their pips fixing the line. That someone is me. We use a standard 80cm x 80cm board and increase this to 120cm x 80cm for the larger battle. Pike work best if used as they were intended, to pin the enemy, while the cavalry wing rolls up the enemy’s flank. The opposite wing is busy foiling the enemy to do the same. Here are two examples of pike battles. There is a possible solution present in the DBA army list. The French Ordonnance IV/82b have 1 x pikemen (7Hd) in addition to 2 x Swiss mercenaries (4Pk). The French pikemen were raised in Picardy and Savoy. However, their performance forced Charles VIII to recruit more Swiss and rearm the pike with other weapons. I used this example of “lesser trained” pikemen for the Ghent rebellion scenario against the Duke of Burgundy (1453). Along the march to Gavere, Ghent gathered troops enroute and to represent these, the elements were based as horde. Actually, they are 9 figures on a 40mm x 40mm and can be seen in photos of the refight (3 of 7, lower right). War of the Roses (project)
I have posted to the blog the latest project, titled War of the Roses. Starting next week, this should need several months to complete. Half the late medieval collection will be involved needing a minimal amount of rebasing and touch-up painting to create uniformity. dbagora.blogspot.com/2024/05/war-of-roses-project.html

Supplies bought, I have finished texturing 30 elements. Monk’s work made easy while listening to audio books.
Painting and flocking of the Bosporans and mobile baggage will be done over the next few days.

Pleased that the 48 auxilia are now based and flocked. Half have helmets, a uniform of sorts and make up the city-militias (Sp). The remainder are the Gallo-Roman levies (4Ax). Both will add variety for the Later Imperial or Patrician armies. Working on the late 4th century Bosporans to fill out the period. Collected from the extras box, all 12 elements will need some repainting. The mobile artillery was the last element added. Bases for the 4th c. Bosporans need repainting to make them consistent. And new flocking, but this will require a trip tomorrow for supplies. In the meantime, rebasing civilian figures and animals to make mobile baggage for Arab and Late Medieval European armies. Time well spent, figures are clean and ready for basing. 12 mobile baggage elements; half Arab, half medieval. 6 camp followers, half Arab, half medieval. No need to paint, but the gloss varnish will need to change.

Underforeignplanets,
Welcome to the forum. Seven years ago, my how time flies.
The campaign was divided to follow the three major conflicts, the expansion of Nilfgaard, the first and second Wars of Nilfgaard.
The expansion phase was tested and worked well.
However, other projects came and were finished, then followed the complete refurbishment of the Muslim armies (2020). This placed the Witcher project to the back burner.
Refurbishment of collections continued with the Late Medieval collection. This created 24 armies and flags are interchangeable, giving me twice that number.
Long story short, the Witcher project is not forgotten, just delayed.

What, playing a game? What madness is this? We're here to paint multitudes of tiny soldiers! I do paint, but spend time researching before putting point to a brush. Late 5th/early 6th century shield patterns have posed a problem. However, Late Roman/Early Byzantine mosaics helped locate six patterns. Painting begins tomorrow.
