Martin was the worthy winner of the GBnUIT leg. His skyline was my vote for themed stronghold. we didn't get the results of the votes on the day.
Cheers Terry for the excellent give-away measuring sticks - delightful momentos.
A few of my Pics are available over on the Yahoo site - I don't seem able to upload here - pics too big.

Wish I could have been there, the armies look great and the venue ideal. Perhaps you could consider a blog to make these reports more accessible? Phil Steele seems to do a few of these sorts of refights, on or near the battlefield as well. I always enjoy his reports, including background outlining the project. Years ago I read of a big DBA event played outside in Rome, which equally would have been great to play in. Thanks Keith - I will check out the blogging possibilities. I hadn't really thought it would be of interest. It just seems like my own nutty idea. However it looks like the notion may have some legs...

A really good idea - do let me know if you are looking for any extra people to come along to the next one! Simon That would be fantastic Simon. Its time to revisit Bosworth - especially as we now know thebactual battlefield site (some way from the visitor centre). I will email some suggested dates to you.

Some of you may be interested in my report of my latest day out. This practice of doing re-fights in the actual battlefield locations started when my chum Terry Webb visited the UK some years back. I am fortunate in living in central England with a host of Battles in an easy days drive. I know its not a form of the hobby that everyone can indulge in but it is fun to do.

Bill, the man who does all the number-crunching for the League, has kindly updated the current standings after the recent Britcon tournament. The scores can be found on the PAWS website:- portsmouthwargames.wordpress.com/society-of-ancients-uk-dba-league/2016-17-scores/Looks like a tight race at the top, with Mark S and Pete D contending for the crown. And only Autumn PAWS and the Open (plus maybe another Bakewell?) to go.... Thanks Bill 👍 Sadly a rather damp finish from my end as I'm away in America for October. I couldn't make Britcon and am very unlikely for the Paws open. Nice to have been in contention though!

Thanks for the kind words. The new Donnington are good figures but separate weapons and (especially for the Irish) tiny separate shields does make preparing the figures a bit of a task...

Well done Mark. Sorry I couldn't be there. Was dismounting outlawed? How else were Grahams Lithuanians restricted? Great to see the poles doing so well in the run up to Brexit

What make is the Norse Irish army, which Pete won? ... Donnington Cheers Simon. Lovely figures they are too. However they nearly all have separate weapons and the tiniest separate shields I ever saw. It will need a lot of prep work even though they are lovely clean casts with hardly any mold lines to file away. Still I need something to keep me busy over the summer This is the Fourth army I have won in tournaments this year. Spookily remarkable. The Pre-Feudal Scots from Alton came ready painted (Cheers Martin - star!) and I already painted up the Maori's from HOTT Staines but have only had one game and I was fighting against them. I spent the voucher from the Welsh Open on Celtiberian's from Magister Militum - they are still on the painting tray but coming along...

Thanks for congrats etc.
I agree with David C - we should stop dismounting in competition games.
I would allow it only when choosing your list at the start of the competition. I have used it most at the start of the battle when I've deployed second and can exploit the enemy disposition as when I played Scott. The Qaramati are really tricksy as they are Camels - which already have Quick kills. They have with 8 out of 12 able to dismount. Its even more tricksy with two troop types the camels can become - some Bow some Spear. I suspect the dismountable troops in this list should really be classed as camel mounted infantry, but hey - not my choice.
I happened to have an Arab Conquest army which I could morph - though I still needed to buy a lot of camel guys. To play with the dismounts you need 20 elements for a 12 element army. I know at least one other player is looking to paint one up. And Richard Pulley also took a Qaramita army to this tournament. Are we facing a Qaramita tsunami?
I think dismounting is a broken rule. To me it's like playing the kids game Scissor Paper Stone (in effect the quick kill rule of the DBx system) but this quirk allows me to go "Ah I see you have selected scissors whereas I had selected paper. I now invoke the special rule (only available to me) and turn my paper into stone.
I think I also benefit because camels have been a rarity - especially in numbers. Two opponents apparently forgot that Knights are quick killed by Camels. The list also has low aggression which often lets me lay down Dunes and an Oasis which only the camels treat as good going.
I think it would be good to ban dismounting from tournament play. That said Richard Pulley - who is a fine DBA player took the same army and came 20th out of 24. Another player Graham Fordham (who I also see as a tough opponent) took Lithuanians - an army with a similar dismounting option (Light horse to Bows) came mid table. I know I have done well enough in competitions where I've had no dismounting troops but that still doesn't mean this rule works...
Lets play DBA, not play "who has the best dismounting options"!

Glad you enjoyed the format - though clearly not the result!
I think there are super armies.
The classic IMHO is Hero General Hero Paladin 3/6 Blade 3/6 Shooters
Hard to beat with something other than a similar army.

Cheers Martin.
Loved your report Martin. How did you guys find the format? Did you enjoy facing your own armies in the second half?

Full results are : hereOh dear - rather bad form to win the event you organise... Thanks for all for talking part - especially those of you with a long journey. I trust you all arrived safe well & in a timely fashion. A really fun day with some lovely armies. Great to see Martin Golay's Carry On army again. Mark won the Best Themed army award by a landslide of the popular vote. I've added my to a new album over in Yahoo photos. Pleas add if you have any.
