This sounds like an interesting thread. What was the scoring system used Keith, and what were you looking to incentivise or reward?

Status update: The DBA tournament on Saturday is confirmed. If anyone else is looking to book, it would be good if you did this in the next couple of days as Warfare will be allocating prizes to tournaments on Friday. This will be based on the number of participants and we are only a couple short of the next mark. On the other hand, the HoTT (Sunday) has not received enough entries and will be cancelled. Those who have booked will get a refund, as discussed in emails I sent them. Best, Noted Booked!

Hi Martin. I'm afraid I won't be able to make it to Cold Ash this year, too many other commitments - sorry!

I've had no response from the colours organisers, so I don't think they'll be a DBA competition there this year unfortunately.

Thanks so much Simon for putting on a great tournament. A challenging theme that got the grey matter churning, a wonderful atmosphere with lot so laughter, but the best bit for me was two of my opponents turning round and saying at the end of their games that they had had a cracking game. Some wonderful sportsmanship.
Thank you all for making the day what it was.

I didn’t know Frank well and I think I only played him once or twice, but I got the impression that a DBA tournament was an important social event for him and that he was as much interested in gaming chat as he was in the gaming – perhaps more so. It didn’t seem to bother him that he often lost his games, he was consistently philosophical about it; never getting upset or frustrated and always ending games with me on a smile. We can all learn, I think, from this fine example. I’m sure he will be missed by players further north who knew him better and maybe we will all dwell for a moment on the realisation that you often only really value something when it’s taken away. Colin I can't think of anything to add to this. It was always a pleasure playing him, partly for the chat, partly for the eyebrow raising tactical decisions. He was missed at Bakewell, and he will be missed for many years to come.

We should get a tour bus together and live life on the road travelling the globe attending events. The WWE of the gaming world. Sponsorship deals the lot. ... and a TV comedy series. Perhaps called the Elementorists. Lines such as "They are not toy soldiers - they are historical miniatures" and "We are not playing, we are engaged in a historical simulation." Perhaps an amusing scene involving the meaning of "within?" There would obviously need to be a viewing warning before the start. Cheers Simon Cue ratings! Sounds like a great idea Alan. As per martin's suggestion, the post maintained by senor Wilson is a great resource for planning. £10 is a reasonable price, especially given the facilities you mention and the possibility of prizes.

The PAWS Winter DBA has now been rescheduled to be held on Saturday 14th January 2023, at Fort Cumberland, Portsmouth starting at 12 noon. Theme and list of armies are unchanged. More details will be on the PAWS website soon. Brilliant, thanks for that Bill. Looking forward to it.

Levelling up, you say? If I set off from the South Coast, I might only get as far as Birmingham.

Hello all,
I managed to get a list of armies, and there was a fair mix between those turning up with one nellie and those who bought a whole herd. I myself had Numidians on standby (5 LH inc Gen, plus a bunch of psiloi), but they ended up not taking the field. Thanks to all of those who travelled, some from as far away as Barnsley, Cardiff and Kent! Very honoured. We also raised £25 for a charitable elephant related cause, which i donated to the World Wildlife Foundation.
Armies were as follows:
3 x III/10b Rajput, plus one III/10c "Other" 5 x Successor armies, including one Seleucid (II/19d), 2 Kassandros (II/18c), 1 Antipatros (II/18a) and one later Phyrrhic (II/27b) One Tamil with Allies One Kushan with Skythian allies One later T'ang
Final results were:
1st Paddy Myers 2nd Lindon Paxton 3rd Baldie 4th Martin Smith 5th Martin Myers 6th Colin O'Shea 7th Arnaud Marmier (same number of points as Colin, but Sum of opponent's scores was slightly less) 8th Mike Baldwin 9th Steve Etheridge 10th Bill McGillivray 11th Phil Barrington 12th Paul Clair
Thanks to everyone who came along, you made me losing my tournament organising virginity less painful than I thought it might have been.

Hi Everyone!
6 days to go.
Whilst the show doesn't officially start until 10.00, we have been given permission to come in early (09.30 ish). I have passed everyone's names to the organisers, and they have asked you to please please sign in upon arrival at the Newbury and Reading Wargames Society desk just inside the main entrance.
Whilst the show is free, I am asking for a small contribution(£2 or so) towards prizes and trophies . I also have a little gift for everyone taking part as well. Once those costs are covered, I will donate any surplus to a ethical, responsible elephant orphanage or charity.
We are up on the second floor, at the opposite end to the bring and buy sale.
See you all soon, Mark

My biggest mistake came about when playing sheffmark at Bakewell, thinking that my spear general (8Sp Theban with flank support!) might win against a hard flanked psiloi. Fool that I am.
