In a game with a certain Mr Skelton I learned the valuable lesson about not standing an elephant general behind another elephant when it recoils. If it helps, you're not the only one who associate me with their biggest mistake.

Thanks for running a very pleasant afternoon Bill. All I can say is that it's a game of luck skill. I took the very thematic Zanj revolt army and defended in all of my games, causing havoc with Littoral landings at every opportunity. It's a gamey mechanic, but it does make things entertaining regardless of whether the nominated troops are successful or not. In the first round I played Lindon's Christian Nubians who had bravely trekked to Iraq to offer my Zanj rebels the chance of eternal peace. In the end it was the Nubians who received eternal peace, but it was a close run thing. Second I was up against the dreaded Qaramita of Phil Barrington, but the dismounting was neutralised by some lucky terrain placement and littoral landing positioning. Thirdly, there was a Judaen People's Front/People's front of Judae moment with my Zanj playing colinthehittite's Zanj, made all the more hilarious by the fact that Colin had painted my army, and was using the exact same composition. Trying to remember who's blades were who's gave Colin the opportunity to enter the running for sportsman of the year when I hard flanked my own element, which he then pointed out and allowed me to correct, allowing me to win the game. Hats off to Mr. O'Shea. Last round of the group stages meant having a go at Paddy Myer's Hindu Indians. My first kill was nabbing the Elephant General with a Psiloi which should have made the rest of the game easy to win, but I made a bit of a fist of it. With time running out all of the combat was focused in the centre of the board, with blades trying to kill cavalry, psiloi and leaderless nellies - eventually we got a result. In the final I played one of my many nemeses cgothicus, with a second Qaramita army deploying as far away from the Euphrates canals as possible, with limited success. With some lucky pips early on I did my best to box Richard in, and a very tactical slog ensued. Ultimatley, my luck was better than my opponent's. Thanks to my opponents and everyone else who came along and made it a great day. Cheers all.

Two weeks to go. Could those still planning to come (despite travel disruption) let me know so I can get some idea of a headcount, please? Bill Hi Bill. I've given my apologies to a kayaking excursion and a booze up in Chichester, so I'll be there. Mark

I have just realized there is a train strike scheduled for 20th August. I'm afraid that will almost certainly rule me out. Sorry to hear that! Hopefully see you sometime later in the year....

OK dokes. I've run 4 scenarios based on an attendance of 14, 16, 18 or 20. In each situation I can offer a 4 round group stage, a semi final and a final, and I can run a plate competition for any of the runners up who want to be involved, so the options there if people want to wander off after 4 games. Timings might stretch a little bit towards the end of the day!

Thanks very much for that Keith. With Mike and Andy, plus Lindon and Paul mentioned in Bill's post, plus diadescendent, that gets us up to 15. Looking strong!

It is for exactly this reason I avoid spherical dice. Or the fabled D3692, or anything else with more faces.

Why two different unit types for bows (or longbows or cross bows)? What are they supposed to represent? Are 4BW supposed to be a massed formation of archers while 3BW is supposed to be more of a line? There's approximately 40mm difference between 3BW and 4BW, at least when you're playing 15mm scale. Sorry, couldn't resist! The old troop descriptions at the start of the rule book are really great for answering these sorts of questions.

I would like to suggest that I create a separate e-mail distribution list for UK DBA/HOTT Tournament organisers or potential organisers so that we can exchange plans and so avoid clashes or near misses and create a coherent calendar of events. We are in the fortunate position of seeing the numbers of tournaments grow and people are clearly willing to travel some distance to attend. As far as I can see the main organisers are myself, Paul Murgatroyd, Martin Smith, Portsmouth Bill, Martin Myers, Mark Skelton, Pete Duckworth, Tim Kohler, "Berkley" and "allnewstevie." I am happy to co-ordinate this. Cheers Simon That would be brilliant Simon, thanks very much! I know there is a calendar function on this forum, but in my humble opinion it's not overly user friendly or obvious - otherwise we'd already be using it? If we wanted to use that, we could perhaps agree a format or naming convention to set apart tournaments in different countries? Don't want to hijack Steve Etheridge's original post, but this gets thumbs up from me!

With the above, I make the attendance list to be something like: diadespaddy649martinBaldiecolinthehittiteberkeleypawsbillallnewsteviearnopovphilgeyerWhich makes 10 so far, plus some other interest on other forums which I will collate in due course. I've had a think about points schemes and how to make the day run, plus some advice from Bill. If we get 16 people, I think I will make it 4 groups of 4, 3 rounds in the group stages to establish a leader from each. If we can get to 20, then we can go for 4 groups of 5, with 4 rounds in the group stages.

Would love to attend, if there is still room. I would bring a critical mass of Elephants. I wondered if this might attract your attention.... There is room, and a space has your name on it!

Count me in too (and I expect a number of the PAWS mob would be interested too) Quick question on which armies would be valid. Would it be permissible to bring an army that can not have an Elephant option, but have an allied contingent with an Elephant? No problemo Bill, this wouldn't give you any unfair advantage or disadvantage as far as I can see. Please let me know if any of the other Portsmouth crowd are interested.

As per this thread, I have spoken with martin and the organiser's of Colours and volunteered to run a DBA themed tournament. The theme is Problematic Pachyderms. You must bring an army with at least one elephant in it, but the first elephant lost will count as two elements lost, or 3 if it's a General - rather like a double element, but without the corresponding combat bonus. My logic is that elephants that were trained for war and moved onto a battlefield would have taken up significantly more resources than a typical elements worth of fighting units, so their loss would have really hurt a commander. Especially if he was sat on one at the time. Given this event will take place at a show, I am planning on running a set of "group stages" games in the morning and perhaps early afternoon, with the winners of those going through to a semi final and a final. Those not qualifying for the last games will be welcome to watch, play their own games, or explore the rest of the show. I need to confirm timings with the show organisers, but I am anticipating: Registration 09.30-10.00 Round 1 10.00-10.50 Round 2 11.00-11.50 Round 3 12.00-12.50 Lunch 12.50-13.30 Round 4 13.30-14.20 Round 5 14.30-15.20 Round 6 15.30-16.20 Entry into the show is free, but I am considering charging a small fee to cover prizes and trophies. It won't be extortionate, and I'll post something once I've looked further into it. Based on the previous thread I can see there are a number of people interested. I am going to limit the numbers to 16 players, so please get in touch if you'd like a place. I already have: Diades Paddy649 martin Baldie colinthehittite berkeley Please get in touch if you are interested!
