RIP. I am certain he will be remembered fondly by all of us with Armies of the Dark Ages on our shelves.

I am still learning how speed paints might be similar to or different from washes... but wouldn't most metallic uses be likes of dry brush 'iron' colour over black primer for mail or bronze like colour over black primer for bronze age armour or (especially on smaller figures) bright or dull silver (or bronze) like colour over black primer for swords and spears in iron age (or bronze age)? Or am I simplifying my colour range too much? CarlL Hi Carl. We don't have much idea about the metallics. Or about the 2.0 range yet. But the 1.0 were good. Not great but good. So with natural improvement I am hopeful that Army Painter get it (near) right. Unfortunately, the paint developers concentrate on 28mm + models. IMHO 15mm is slightly different (eg using brighter colours to offset the smaller scale) but we'll see. Cheers Jim

It just seemed that the individual figures, like the cavalry, were larger than the previous releases on their 6cm base.

Hence the correct DBA characterisation would be: 3Bd//Sp//3Ax//4Ax provided Sp also get +1 for flank support from solid pike. This is pretty much where I got to with this unit under Alexander if you're going to get them to act as they are described by the ancient authors. Probably slightly less flexible under Phillip (remove the Ax capability). Cheers Jim

I've used it a couple of times. Once for Gauls. The other was to use the Baueda Late Roman fort for Post Roman Britain. Easy to build in two parts.

Jim, Ingenious and beautiful roofing tiles! How did you keep a steady hand for all these 'vertical' and 'horizontal' cuts? Did you use a saw or other tool? Well done, and great end results. CarlL PS a bonus is that your Greek houses would be useful all around the Mediterranean. The basic shapes were cut out using a Proxxon hot wire cutter. Doors and windows just carved out. The roof tiles were made with a small metal ruler and sharp blade. One tip I picked up is to have an upside down ceramic cup nearby. The circular rough bit can quickly sharpen a blade when cutting foam. Cheers Jim

Lovely army - have two sets built with Battle Line minis too. For the camp I built a small pā-style palisade with a couple of Eureka Hawaiian pikemen as the camp follower element (there is evidence of use of long polearms to fight through the open palisades, but not in the field). Although not strictly historical, I use them to fight other Polynesian and Melanesian armies, and they are a great challenge with all these blades. I'm still in the planning phase for a Pa, which will be used as a fort for DBA, unless I split it in half to act as camp and fort. Jim

Hello, I am trying to run some what-if games around the Peloponnesian War. In the first stage we have Athens assisting revolts against the Persians in cities located in Asia Minor. What army list would be good to represent those cities? Thanks It would depend on your preamble. Historically, the local Hoplites during the Ionian revolt (499-493 BC) were considered somewhat lesser than the mainland troops, largely because they weren't practiced. They had lived in relative peace under the Great King for years. In that setting you could make them 4Ax rather than Sp (spears give the current Persian army list a tough time). Otherwise, take the Other City or Overseas Mercenary list and add some local allies (Mysian Psiloi, Thracians, Carians, etc). All sounds like good fun! Cheers Jim

...that army is a great one too but to find opponents is an other problem... No natural opponents but time wise concurrent with my Tlingit and Hawaiians. There is a theory that the Tlingit and the Hawaiians had a bit of a dust up. So who knows? I've also got some unpainted with muskets for DBA-Hx or Hordes in the Empire but need to find suitable European forces. There's probably enough for an intra-tribal battle. Cheers Jim PS Planning to eventually get the Mound builders from Eureka and the Iroquois from Khurasan (Eastern Forest). Then I can say I have all the armies of one continent!

Dp you win if you capture the camp? No. It counts as one element lost. Jim

Inspired by timurilank , I had a go at some Greek houses with XPS foam. Cutting the shape with a hot wire cutter and carving out doors and windows was straight forward. The tiled roofs was what always put me off this project. My solution was to cut alternate slit 3-4mm wide and 1 mm wide. The I was able to compress into the XPS the wider cuts whilst leaving the 1mm standing. Then with a sharp blade I cut the perpendicular lines and widened them slightly with a pencil. Then painted and wash. Cheers Jim

These are Battle Line Miniatures Maori. A little out of period as I used the axe armed troops post European contact as there were limited poses with traditional weapons. Again, the camp is based on a Waka (war canoe) with a little souvenir picked up from Auckland for this purpose. Cheers Jim
