In years gone by I would be making preparations for running the Welsh Open DBA Championships at the CRUSADE show by this week. However, with the demise of Crusade there is no longer an available venue. It seems there is still a desire for such a tournament, judging by the number of questions I was asked about it at the Cold Ash Clash last year. A venue that I have never been to was suggested to me as being Firestorm Games store in East Cardiff. I did make preliminary enquiries at the end of last year but they were already fully booked for the 28th January. Besides which I understand there is now another DBA tournament in southern England on that date. But I haven’t given up on the idea as yet. I plan to visit Firestorm some time soon for a recce. But I wonder if folk would mind commenting on a couple of questions for me to assess viability of a future event, assuming I can find a suitable Saturday in another part of the year.
Firestorm would handle bookings for the tournament themselves. A day’s attendance is currently £7.50. Their web site mentions various facilities like hot food café, free parking, etc. But they would expect all players to book their place a fortnight before the event. Does this seem reasonable?
Also, how would folk feel about paying an additional £2.50, bringing it up to a round £10, in order to provide a prize fund in the form of trophies, like I used to do at Crusade?
If that all seems reasonable then maybe I can look at running something later in the year.

Hello All,
As some of you may already know the Penarth Wargamers have taken the regrettable, yet entirely understandable, decision to cancel CRUSADE 2021. This also means that there will be no Welsh Open DBA Championship in 2021. I hope that there will be one in 2022 and I’ll get to see old friends and maybe some new ones then.
Until then, stay safe.

Updated attendee list: ATTENDING WELSH OPEN AT CRUSADE 2020 Lee Storey Colin O’Shea Bill MacGillivray Martin Smith Peter Ellis? Keith McGlynn Martin Myers (aka Diades) Patrick Myers Stephen Finn Jason Collis Connor Truby Chris Cale Tim Cale Matthew Davison That's 13 + a 50/50. Two regular names I haven't see yet are Arnaud Marmier and Denis Grey. Can anyone confirm / deny? Assume Peter Ellis is doubtful. He hasn't got back to me to arrange transport and if he doesn't do so in the next couple of hours, it will be too late. I think that would make it 16 exactly. According to the latest list.

I am now in Cardiff and should be attending. Public transport to St Cyrus is a bit iffy. I am due at the St Cyrus School bus stop at 9.40 am on the first bus of the day. It is the same bus whether I travel from Cardiff by bus all the way or take a train to Penarth. Are you John Saunders?

Hi all, Connor here. New to the event, the forum and the game! I am not a member of any society but I am willing to have results given etc. I am of course happy to have name given to the people at the door. Did someone say less queue? For someone very green, are we expected to bring our own terrain and boards? It shouldn't be a problem if so, it's just easier to carry swag from the show home otherwise. Looking forward to meeting you all. Connor So, Munifex = Connor Truby?

I'll have terrain available to loan out but most guys bring their own so I have rarely had to do so.
We do supply boards. I think we have 12 so that shouldn't be a problem.
Sorry, no shuttle service. The web master has been asked to take down that information but hadn't gotten around to it.
I have the trophies. I have the armies from MM. Just some admin to sort out tomorrow, (I booked two days off work!), and I'll be just about ready.

MM have confirmed to me that Miniature World Maker terrain would have taken too long to get to me. I may do a brief survey at the tournament to guage opinion about prizes and then sort stuff out earlier for 2021.
BTW, I really need real names so we don't confuse the door people. If you prefer you can let me know by e-mail: Aldavion @ yahoo dot co I've spaced out the address to thwart crawlers.
Just in case I had better add my mobile number: 07811042222
I wonder if web crawlers can use that?

Update,
Due to time constraints I have gone ahead and ordered two armies as the prize support from Magister Militum, one each for the winners of the open and plate. But there will be trophies for 1st - 4th in the open and 1st - 3rd in the plate.
Getting in. I have had the following information from the show coordinator:
"We will allow the DBA'ers entry from 8.30am onwards. They should enter via the main entrance & ask for Pete (Scott) who will take their entrance fee & issue their wristband. They can then report to the B&B to book in their items & then go straight to the DBA room (we'd rather they weren't wandering around the show at this time!).
We will, however, need a list of those attending for the DBA so that Pete can mark them off".
Is that okay for everyone?

Alan, I'm sure ANY prizes are appreciated.....it's nice of you to ask, but whatever you can do will be more than enough 👍🏼👍🏼 Thanks Martin. No reply from MM so either they are thinking it over or I'll have to go ahead and order armies as prizes. I can't leave it any later really. Still looking forward to Saturday week though!

I'm checking with MM. Re-reading their e-mail the one issue is if they have to order in the products then it won't get to me in time for CRUSADE. So that means Baueda camps are out as they specifically mention they can't do those. I have asked about "Miniature World Maker" terrain. If not then I will have to default to armies again and the winners get to learn about obscure armies.
