In years gone by I would be making preparations for running the Welsh Open DBA Championships at the CRUSADE show by this week. However, with the demise of Crusade there is no longer an available venue. It seems there is still a desire for such a tournament, judging by the number of questions I was asked about it at the Cold Ash Clash last year. A venue that I have never been to was suggested to me as being Firestorm Games store in East Cardiff. I did make preliminary enquiries at the end of last year but they were already fully booked for the 28th January. Besides which I understand there is now another DBA tournament in southern England on that date. But I haven’t given up on the idea as yet. I plan to visit Firestorm some time soon for a recce. But I wonder if folk would mind commenting on a couple of questions for me to assess viability of a future event, assuming I can find a suitable Saturday in another part of the year.
Firestorm would handle bookings for the tournament themselves. A day’s attendance is currently £7.50. Their web site mentions various facilities like hot food café, free parking, etc. But they would expect all players to book their place a fortnight before the event. Does this seem reasonable?
Also, how would folk feel about paying an additional £2.50, bringing it up to a round £10, in order to provide a prize fund in the form of trophies, like I used to do at Crusade?
If that all seems reasonable then maybe I can look at running something later in the year.

Me too, Alan. Price sounds very reasonable to me. Picking a date and giving a fair amount of notice would be handy. This thread is updated by Simon Wilson regularly, and shows the currently arranged DBA days, and also other dates which might clash. fanaticus.boards.net/thread/3523/2023-uk-dba-hott-tournaments

I'm suffering hiraeth - and I'm not even Welsh. I would certainly be interested.

I’d be interested, but it’s a long way to go and the format would require tweaks to really tempt me in again… 😉

Sadly a 5hour round trip seems too far for me. Maybe I could make a weekend of a Cardiff trip but I doubt it...

We should get a tour bus together and live life on the road travelling the globe attending events. The WWE of the gaming world. Sponsorship deals the lot.

Alan, I'd be interested. £10 with notice is manageable. One of the few fully open competitions and games allowed to play out has always been an attraction. My first ever tournament was at Crusade. Keep me posted.

Perhaps called the Elementorists. Lines such as "They are not toy soldiers - they are historical miniatures" and "We are not playing, we are engaged in a historical simulation." Perhaps an amusing scene involving the meaning of "within?" There would obviously need to be a viewing warning before the start. Cheers Simon

As per martin's suggestion, the post maintained by senor Wilson is a great resource for planning. £10 is a reasonable price, especially given the facilities you mention and the possibility of prizes.
