...a question about your DBA 24 battles: You use a single PIP for 24 elements? Is that enough? Or were those promising attacks slowed down? After the first few hand-to-hand fights, disorderly chaos ensues... Correct, one die is used for the larger command. Play may seem slow, but you have a sense of a plan being developed. Contact between battle lines may take an extra move or two. Group moves are an efficient use of pips. During battle, single element moves are useful to build groups. Historical deployment, two wings, a centre and reserve, work well. Even better, if elements have similar move distance within a group. Attacks will lose momentum, but reserves will help sustain them. Using threat zones to pin an enemy can be just as effective as combat. Eight is the magic number to reach victory. Battles can still be turned around after large losses.

...I've played BBDBA with 3 PIPs until now, or battles with unequal numbers of troops. But a minimum of PIPs will force me to test new tactics. Thanks for the tip...

I believe you will rediscover historically employed tactics. After several turns of combat, it is useful to delay further attack and reform scattered elements into groups for another assault. The loss of the CinC means the subordinate general takes command. He may need repositioning to better control the command.

...after being familiar with DBA and DBM, as a bohemian, I liked to use Slavic armies. Strictly by the rules of P.B. that means Auxilia armies. But that's how I saw where the sturgeon of the hill tribes were. But I also learned to play with knights where necessary... ...but it's very realistic that a battle will go on even if the general dies. (another idea from P.B.)...

My order of Umayyad cavalry and ‘Roman contarii’ arrived yesterday.
Three packs of Arab Conquest and Syrian heavy cavalry of the Crusade are in the process of cleaning, filing and fixing replacement lances (brass rod).
By this evening, all 27 should be ready for an undercoat. Painting can begin Monday, when I return from Germany.

Rome vs. the Commagene
The series moves east and have the Romans facing the Commagene. With nearly half the army consisting of bowmen, the Commagene may seem brittle. Rome however, must contend with enemy cataphract and hoplitai. dbagora.blogspot.com/2023/05/roman-tour-commagene.html

Roman contarii (3Kn) are done and the “British” LH should be finished later today.
Both are conversions, the Roman were Xystophoroi cavalry requiring much cutting and filing and the LH were a command pack with musicians, standard bearers and officers, who now carry javelins.
Time to order the Celtic infantry.

The 4 Ancient British LH elements are done, complete with chequered trousers and war paint.
These lack shields, all small circular ones, but these will be swapped for larger types when the infantry arrive.
Yet, this was well worth the practice (trouser & woad).

Andy (Old Glory UK) mentioned stock of Blue Moon Gallic infantry must be ordered. All his stock was bought up at the last convention. New stock may take a month to arrive. Rather than wait, I used the circular shield for my Ancient British light horse. Photos should be posted to the blog on Sunday.
