Athelstan Invades Alba, 934
Two sources give contrasting accounts of King Athelstan’s invasion of Alba. The expedition proved less than successful; a second attempt would garner the desired result on the field of Brunanburh. The Annals of Clonmacnoise present a possible clash of arms for the game table. Battle report with photos can be found at the link. dbagora.blogspot.com/2022/11/aethelstan-invades-alba-934.html

Battle of Brunanburh 937
The enlarged single command (24 elements) was used for this test. Saxon forces were augmented with the Mercian greater fyrd (7Hd), however, the coalition of Norse, Scots and Strathclyde posed problem as strengths for each contingent are unknown. To solve this, two lists were designed to have either the Norse or Scots deploying the greater number of elements. Using option list one, Edmond served as Aethelstan’s sub-general, and Olaf commanded the coalition with Constantine II his second in command. dbagora.blogspot.com/2022/11/battle-of-brunanburh-937-ad.htmlTesting the second list will take place in December.

An alternative location.
Reviewing the Slingshot USB stick, issue 103, September 1982, the Battle of Brunanburh by H. Charlesworth, offered a location based on Michael Wood’s book, In Search of Aethelstan.
The allied objective was Northumbria with Jorvik squarely at the centre of the campaign. According to Charlesworth, the allied army held an advantage of numbers but the Saxons held a defensible hill (Wendun or White Hill) as compensation.
Something to explore at a later date.

Thank you for mentioning the Slingshot USB stick. I have it as well, and I have been wanting to do the Battle of Flodden, and thus should do a search in on the stick and see what comes up.

Last Tuesday, Jan upheld the undefeated record of the Pre-Feudal Scots.
Despite an early 3 – 0 lead, Strathclyde drew even after an impressive display of skirmishers destroying two fast pike. Good game.
Jan will organise a DBA3 tournament supplying the armies, boards and terrain. No date planned as the figures will need painting. Theme is set for 9th century Britain.

Having sold a number of armies this month and set aside those for February’s offering, I now have a lot of extras.
These are slowly forming new armies for the next project for which the first is nearly completed.
Orders have been placed to fill gaps and should arrive early next month.
