Returning from a relaxing weekend in Belgium, I found my order on Baueda in the post box. I will work first on the spearmen needed to complete two commands of Feudal Spanish. The 6 x Feudal Spanish spear are done. All 24 elements now have ground and grass, giving them a uniform appearance. Flags, done two years ago, are now fixed to their command stands.

Tomorrow, I will add details to 24 spearmen and 8 archers. Originally ordered to build one command of Communal Italian (1070’s), these will become the first of two commands of Italian Lombard of the later sub-list.
The Italian Lombard (Duchy of Benevento) are a better fit as an enemy of the Normans.

Received yesterday a small order from TimeCast UK. Figures are cleaned and ready for an undercoat.
These will make a second Middle Anglo-Saxon command (Mercia) and make possible a refight of Ellendun possible.

I'm look forward to how these turn out for you.I added some Lombards as allies for my Normans a few years back as I liked the Essex Cavalry and Archer figures and then bought the spearmen to add to make the Italio-Lombard list which is a descent opponent for the Normans.I then saw how easy it was to add just a few elements and a different Command element to make the Early Lombards too.

The ‘b’ sub-list dove-tails nicely with the armies currently in the collection; Carolingian, Norman, East Franks, North African Muslim, Magyar, and Nikephorian Byzantine. Lombard infantry are finished and need basing. A second order with Baueda will fill out the cavalry requirement, in the meantime, the Middle Anglo-Saxons are now on the workbench.

Enemies of the Pre-Feudal Scots
I have posted some technical and tactical tips for the Scots to employ as they confront their enemies. They are meant to refresh my memory before meeting my regular opponents (who don’t read the blog). Pictures will be added later. dbagora.blogspot.com/2022/08/enemies-of-pre-feudal-scots.html

The hot weather of last week scorched any enthusiasm to pick up the paint brush, but I did manage to relabel all boxes containing ancient armies.
Using the army list coding system was an improvement; II/39 a,b,c is far better than Ancient Spanish.
During the exercise I was already in possession of an Italian Lombard army (III/23b), so the Baueda figures will become Communal Italian (III/73) as originally planned.
The spearmen have red-white designs, good for most Northern Italian city states. Cleaning and undercoating the remaining six elements will begin tonight.

A severe Case of ‘the Slows’ has impaired my painting tempo. If I manage one colour every other day, I feel fortunate, nonetheless, the last four elements of Communal Italian are nearing their completion. The knights lack their shields, but soon 2 x 3Kn and 2 x 7Hd will be done.

Finishing touch remains; six banners. Colour schemes are covered in Ian Heath’s Armies of Feudal Europe.

Thirty figures lack shields, and then these can be added to the Dark Age collection. These are 6 x 4Bd Vikings, leftovers that will make allied contingents for a number of nations.
Also 2 x 3Wb Irish, kindly gifted to me by Lesp1964. The latter will complete the options for the Pre-Feudal Scots.
Time for some Dark Age battles.

The series of dark age scenarios has resumed with the Battle of Rhuddlan 797 AD, fought between the Welsh and Mercians. This will be uploaded tomorrow with photos.
The recently viewed Macbethhad has also inspired a number of battles for the Pre-Feudal Scots.
