All I really know is I still love Hoplite and Pike heavy armies. When added to my Ancient British obsession I class it as a very specific version of self harm.

Perhaps the book 'The Macedonian Phalanx - Equipment, Organization & Tactics from Philip & Alexander to the Roman Conquest' by Richard Taylor might shed some light. (Only mentioning it because I just received an ad from Naval & Military Press about it.) Cheers. Thanks for this! I see the author has a book on the Greek Phalalnx as well. I find it very useful when authors have studied multiple topics so they are well informed to compare and contrast. Have to add these to to Santa's list! Jim Jim, Richard Taylor is a member of the Society of Ancients. If you are still a member as well, I think there is a review of his book on the Macedonian phalanx in one of the recent Slingshots. Regards, Denis

I really enjoyed reading them and would recommend both not just to the specialist but to anyone with an interest in ancient warfare." The reviewer was Duncan Head.

Here's an interesting podcast from Murray Dahm from Ancient Warfare Magazine: Pikes v Spears at IssusIf nothing else, it shows how little information is available. Cheers Jim

My group in Salerno is using the following factors and modifications:
Pk 4-4 and are double base of 8 figs, rear support +2/+1
So after several games everithing seems more balanced.

Sorry for necro-answering, but this idea just hit me. The (in)famous "pike problem" is somehow "formation-related" i.e the longest battleline has an edge versus the deeper but shorter Pike-line, correct ?
What if the "overlap" and "side to side" malus don't apply to an element IF the ennemy in front have less friendly element on his back ?
If so, a column (like double Pk or Wb... or anything) is still a gambit/risky move, but much less brittle while the ennemy isn't REALLY flanking or playing the same gambit.
Not tested yet. Any thought ?

This would fit nicely into the original rules, because it puts in another exception to a general rule...
But I must say I like it.
