Does it cost a PIP to turn about face? I'm guessing it would, but i can't find anything in the rules other than tactical move so is it a move as such? After all If you get hit in the rear you turn automatically.

It is indeed a move, just remember to measure from front of base.

That would be the base width would it not?

There is a somewhat controversial maneuver that the rules allows you to make to turn 180° when you only have a speed of 1 BW.
Tactical Movement at the top of page 9 says:- “Movement is measured in a straight line, from the starting point of the furthest moving front corner of a single element or group to that corner’s final position.”
_ _ _ _ _ ↑ _ _ _ _ _ ████_ _ _ _ _ ████ ↓
Notice that the left and right front-corners have swapped positions by moving exactly 1 BW, but the front-edge has stayed in the same location, as shown by the dashed line.
It will still cost you 1 PIP to do this (or more if out of command range), but it's the only way an element with a speed of 1 BW can turn 180°.

If you're moving more then 1BW and turning 180 just remember to measure the move diagonally, i.e. the move distance is from where the front left (or right) corner starts, to where it ends up as per example c in Fig 2a on page 16.

Clarification needed: These viking 4Bd to the right may move now 1 BW only. They want to wheel to attack the nearest enemy unit. They are in corner to corner contact. Am I right and their only way of establishing front contact is by turning 90° almost on the spot?

Here is my analysis of your situation Brian. Let’s call the top of your picture ‘the North’, so the Vikings are facing ‘South’, and their left front-corner is ‘point-A’ while their right front-corner is ‘point-B’. Imagine that ‘point-A’ moves 1 BW to the West and occupies ‘point-B’s’ position, forcing ‘point-B’ to move 1 BW to the North so it touches the enemy’s front-corner. There you go…the Vikings have turned 90° to face the West, made legal contact, and no front-corner has moved more than 1 BW.

The vikings’ front left corner would have to move over 1BW to reach the enemy front left corner (1BW sideways and some distance backwards).

Why not move the Bd 1/2 BW backwards and then 1/2 BW to its right to make frontal contact and get the free slide? Unless you don't get the free slide in BG, something that if true, I was unaware of.
Cheers,

Hi Stevie I think Martin is right. The right hand front corner of the viking is not just moving along the line of the front edge (1Bw) but also 5 or 10mm south. I would adopt gregorius' solution if combat is necessary. Regards Stephen
