The announcement appeared yesterday at the Society of Ancients forum. Wiglaf Miniatures offer a range of Dark Age figures for the Age of Penda, specifically early Britain, Mercia, Welsh and Irish. The owner is working with Mark Copplestone and by January 2022, the distribution and webstore should be up and running. wiglafminiatures.wordpress.com/

I think they're terrific. ( love the subject matter), however, I really don't understand makers working with marginal scales. ( eg: 18mm or 10mm) I mean... Why? 6mm. 15mm, 25/28mm are firmly established. What does just slightly smaller or slightly larger get anyone?

I’m with you - why 18mm and why a period that already has so many options anyway??

Added to which is the issue of what scale is really being done. As men in the period would have been about 68 inches tall on average, then 1/100 would actually be 17mm; making 18mm indicates an assumption of men being 72 inches tall. I guess you could use a range of suppliers between 15mm and 20mm to give your armies a realistic range of heights!

Perhaps the manufacturer is just being honest about it.

Very nice! Shame I've done Anglo Saxons and Welsh. But I do have some thoughts of small scale skirmish and 18mm detailed minis may just fit the bill.

Made Essex look like a 10yr old schoolboy next to a Second Row Forward. Totally incompatible, but yes, they sort of ‘warn you’ by calling it 18s

The guy with the Sutton Hoo helmet looks great! I’m a fan of chunky style.

We all have our fetishes but, generally, we keep them to ourselves.

Wiglaf Miniatures is my little baby. I've been writing rules and articles on the early medieval period for many years, and decided I'd like to produce a range of minis using my favourite sculptor (Mark Copplestone).
Thanks for the kind comments, the first packs should be available Feb or March (not January, I'm afraid). I will release a small number of DBA-specific army packs too.
To answer a couple of the other comments:
1. I'm not trying to launch a new, niche mini size. 18mm is used by other manufacturers to indicate the larger 15mm minis produced in recent years. I would not personally mix Wiglaf with some of the smaller ranges such as Essex or Minifigs. It seems disingenuous of me to call them 15s and then have people disappointed by the lack of compatibility, so yes this is about honesty I guess. Call them "big 15s" if you prefer.
2. Why produce a range already covered by other companies? Because its the range I've always wanted to make, based on a few decades of my own research. I've never found a range for the C7th that I wanted to collect, so have made my own. If you already have an Anglo-Saxon army that you like, there's no need look at these. But if you do get some and like them, brilliant.

The DBA army packs will be useful.

Thank you. I've been here a lot over the years but only just created a profile. Back on the old Fanaticus site I contributed fair amount but that was at least 20 years ago now!
Next up after the Anglo-Saxons are the Vendel Culture.

Ooooow real Vendal period figures you say, can you give us a flavour of what to expect? At 18mm they should fit nicely up against Splintered Light figures.
