........... And with this less than ringing endorsement the die was cast and Lo Dae Chuk was going to war. "Oh", said the King. "Let him take that rather promising young University student lad. The one whose grandad wrote a book. You know - the one with top marks in Calligraphy, Poetry and Applied Warfare. He could probably benefit from some work experience". "I will make it so" said the Treasurer. To be continued..... He might be better off taking the writer's second son; Son Two as he is sometimes called. You are well ahead of me!

Soooooooooo it seems the Persians were not destined to rule Greece.Six superb games in a great environment but by eck did I get my ass handed to me. Thinks I scored less points for the whole tourney than in a single game at Bakewell.
Cheers to Simon for sorting. Opponents for great games and everyone else for the bants.
Sorry to those I gave such easy victories to and those who didn't get to play me so missed out on points.
Right then can EAP have any allies with elephants?

Thanks to the 12 players who turned up and seemed to enjoy themselves at Britcon today. Thanks also to the Britcon team for looking after us and providing some great prizes.
The top two places were a draw on the main scoring system so we had to use sum of opponents' scores to settle the tie.
The final rankings were:
1. Paul Murgatroyd Early Carthagenian 2. Peter Davis Asiatic Greek Hoplite 3. John Saunders Other Chinese Armies 1/32c 4. Rob Rush Classical Indian 5. Stephen Finn Other Chinese Armies 1/32c 6. Ken Gordon Saitic Egyptian 7. William Whyler Later Athenian 8. Denis Grey Spring and Autumn Chinese 9= Martin Smith Makkan 9= Colin Alcock Spring and Autumn Chinese 9= Phil Steele Meroitic Kushite 12. Baldie Early Achaemenid Persians
Placings were very tightly grouped!

Baldie, in our game you were TOTALLY robbed!!!! Your dice rolling expertly plucked defeat from the jaws of what looked to me like certain victory….the pair of us repeatedly getting ones for PIPs when we needed two+ for a decisive move was desperate stuff….and Xerxes’ nominated commander dying in the chaos was totally unexpected, giving me an undeserved win, when added to a solitary 8Bw kill. 😳 Thanks to Simon for running the day so well (as always), and to my opponents for six challenging games. Ended 9th equal with two others…so effectively 11th …served me right for trying to get a result with Makkan!! But it was an enjoyable uphill struggle with some fun littoral landing moments, usually ending in the death of the wet-footed ones. Also, good to see Phil Steele back in the saddle, with his nicely painted Meroitic Kushites on tour. Cheers all 👍🏼👍🏼

Ffantastic games with a few looking like I had it in the bag for my lads to roll over and the dice to realise the enemy were partying more than they had been offered by their own side.

My ‘left field’ choice of Makkan I/8b provided amusement, but mainly for my opponents-
1 . Defending v Stephen Finn’s Spring and Autumn Chinese… my Makkan headed into a big patch of dunes to avoid the Chinese chariots, then popped out here and there to fight, coming to a 3-3 draw at close of play.
2. Invading v Pete Davis’ Asiatic Hoplite Greeks, who lost an element to Makkan boat-borne warband before realigning and stuffing the opposition good n proper. A 1-5 loss for the pre-pre-Islamic-arabs.
3. Defending v Paul Murgatroyd’s Carthaginians. After much manoeuvre and before fully ready the Makkan launched an attack on the left, hoping to make progress before the Carthaginians could redeploy again, and much in fear of the Punic heavy chariotry. A 1-4 loss followed, partly die to tough Carthaginian skirmishers defeating deep Makkan warbands.
4. Defending v an invasion by Baldie’s Early Achaemenids, a full-on theme army, with around four deep bow elements (8Bw) and a pair of levied hordes. Makkan archers somehow outshot one Persian 8Bw for an early kill, but other Makkan were slowly getting picked off. Defeat seemed imminent for my pre-Omani Omanis, until the Achaemenid commander caught an unlucky javelin in the throat for a Makkan win….2g inc general and double element, plus a horde vs 3 Makkan losses.
5. Defending again, with an influx of Spring and Autumn Chinese led by Colin Alcock (my most feared army, four appeared on the day, from 12 players). Makkan landing troops did some minor damage on the Chinese right, but fighting then went Colin’s way. However, in the centre the rumbling chariots were luckily defeated by Makkan cav general, camelry and archers for a 5-3 Makkan win.
6. Lastly, the Makkan invaded Meroitic Kush, the defenders led by Phil Steele… good to see him back. The Makkan foot warriors managed to overrun one Meroitic spear unit, and the enemy Elephant general was kept occupied by Makkan slingers, but after that it seemed my lot were too tired to fight as all the combats went Phil’s way, and we ended on a resounding defeat by 1-5.
