Curious to know if anyone attended Historicon 2021 (USA) last weekend? If so, how was the DBA scene?
Many moons ago I regularly attended the HMGS cons. For a few years I religiously pilgrimaged to Fall In and Historicon. Back then it was part of the WAB gaming community, but there was always a vibrant DBA scene a few tables over. Thinking of renewing my trips to the big cons next year and am interested in how vibrant DBA remains. (WAB has turned to dust a good decade + ago).

Zero DBA activity is the norm. The group which used to do most of the DBA games went from DBA rules as written; to DBA 2.2+, their own modifications, which moved on to their own rules, Triumph. Triumph is similar enough to DBA that a quick read would allow you to play. They state they had about a dozen players for their events at Historicon.
The days of 60 players for Midnight Madness DBA is done.
I held one or two DBA rule events before Covid, and drew 6 players. Bob Beattie held 4 events and drew 2 players. that was sad to me.
Tony Aguilar held more successful DBA events, maybe half a dozen, at Historicon before Covid. I recall about a dozen players for most of the events.
There are many more players doing Art de la Guerre.
What's your location, I'm near DC.

I hail from the Bloomington area of Indiana. It saddens me to hear about the waning of DBA at HMGS events. Alas, the 'balkanization" of historicals is probably an overriding reason that inferior game designs by companies like GW have such dominance in the market place. GW provides a 'lingua franca' ( even if the games are awful, people can still find a game). I know little of Triumph. Does it share the WRG/DBX basing scheme?

Had to skip this Historicon (the first one that was held and I have missed since 2006) due to being moved to literally the worst month for me to attend + added the restrictions for attendance.
We will plan on returning in July 2022 unless things don't get back to normal.

Yes, Triumph is just DBA with some bells & whistles. It was born out of the development of DBA 3. The main group of folks that had run the Big East conventions had a falling out with Phil and published their own version of DBA. The split was ugly. That is past, but the damage was done. They have their own version of HoTT now as well.
The DBA tournament scene in the States never really recovered, though Tony (and Tom... and Bob... and others) have done good work in trying to rebuild.
DBA does quite well in England, France, Italy, Australia and NZ... but it languishes in the States.

Yeah. Looking at the Historicon events list for 2022 it looks like Triumph has completely blotted out DBA at HMG East events. Funnily enough, in my neck of the Mid West I know no one actively playing Triumph and our little game community has rediscovered DBA 3.0
I can't say that the events list has me fired up to drive the 9 hours and spend the $500-$1000 its gonna cost to attend Historicon this year. Thought it was but I think I can make more substantive contributions in my local gaming community with that time and money.

We plan on attending Historicon 2022 (already made hotel reservations) but have not submitted/ironed the schedule. Heck we just submitted games las week for our Recon show at the end of April. We will have a full schedule like we have had in 2019 and previously. PEL close out date is May 11th so they will be in well before that. Like I said we plan on going assuming there is no mask mandate or other such stuff.

If I knew there were going to be some DBX shenanigans I could see my way to convincing myself to go.

The PEL for Historicon 2022 was supposed to be up on Wednesday of this week, but I heard that there was a delay. I will announce what exactly we will be running once it gets posted up.
There are a total of NINE DBA 3.0 events we will be running - one on Wednesday, three on Thursday, Three on Friday and Two on Saturday.
This of course is contingent on the situation in PA not changing from what it is right now.
