Here is a trivia question for you and I do not know the correct answer.
What is the most diverse historic matched pair?
My definition of diverse being the highest count of element types THAT APPEAR IN ONLY ONE of the opposing armies.
And I will make it more difficult still, by:
a) not discriminating between fast or solid, so for example if one army has fast 3Bd and the other has solid 4Bd, then blades do not count as diverse.
b) not discriminating between chariots and their simply mounted counterparts, so for example if one army has LCh and the other has Cv, then these element types are not diverse.
I will, however, accept double based elements as diverse from normal counterparts, so if 6Cv on one side and 3Cv on the other and neither appear in their opposites, the count would be two.
So, for example, Early Imperial Roman vs Ancient Britons if selected as
3 x Cv, 4 x 4Bd, 4 x 4Ax, Art. Vs 4 x LCh, 2 x LH, 6 x 3Wb
would count a diversity of 5 (blades, auxilia, artillery, light horse and warband; cavalry and light chariots cancel each other out).
Thoughts?

Alexandrian Imperial vs Republican Indians scores 11. That should be hard to match.

Hmm, this should be interesting. A quick count of the unit types listed in the table on page 7 suggests a theoretical maximum of around 25...

So, a theoretical maximum of 24, unless a dismounting option makes it 25? My reckoning is 22: El 3/4 Kn, HCh 6Kn Cv, LCh 6Cv LH/LCm SCh Cm Sp 8Sp 3/4Pk 3/4Bd 6Bd 3/4Ax 3/4 Bw/CB/Lb 8Bw Ps 3/4Wb 7/5Hd Art WWg CP/Lit/CWg 10 best so far....

The III/39 Late T’ang or Five Dynasties Army 755-979AD can have 13 different elements and for fun the IV/12e Maori Armies 1100-1785AD only has 1!

I can only see options for 9 different elements fielded at a time for the T’ang...even if alternate types are available...and their opposition for all 9 to count?

My personal instinct... II/19c Seleucid vs II/23a LPIA Nomad
Kn, Pk, El, SCh, Ax, Wb vs Cv, LH, Cm, Bd, Bw (Ps on both sides do not count)...
...11

I agree with your analysis, but I was happy to find how many different elements were available to III/39. But thanks to you I am still looking over lists! lol

Macedonian: 3Kn, LH, 4Pk, Art, El, 3/4Ax, Ps Indian: HCh, Cav, 4Lb, 3Bd, 4Ax I make that 11 troop types in play - I suppose 10 if the Ax cancel out, or 9 if HCh = 3Kn.

Some distance from my usual focus, but
Early Vietnamese (I/49d): 1 x El, 1 x Ax, 1 x Bd, 3 x Wb, 6 x Ps Sui (III/20a) : 3 x Kn, 1 x Sp, 2 x Pk, 1 x 8Bw, 4 x Bw, 1 x LH
Eleven troop types and no cancellations, so 12 elements a side.

They may be weird conditions I have set, but yes, HCh=Kn and Ax cancel. Also Macedonians can only take El or Art , not both. I still think you can get 9. Indian 3xCv, 1x3Bd, 2x4Ax, 6xLb Macedonian 2x3Kn, 1xLH, 6x4Pk, 1xArt(or El), 2xPs

Ignore all of the below...I now understand the rules!
I was thinking II/7 Later Acheaemenid CV, LH, PS, LCh, 4Ax, 3Ax, SP, 3Kn, SCh, 7Hd (10)
against either I/6 Early Aramaean 3Wb, Cm (+2)
or II/12 Alexander Macedonian 4Pk, Art (+2)
Giving 12 troop types.
But you count the LCh as a Cv, which drops it to 11 types. And you count fast/solid as the same, so it drops to 10 types.

I/58 Meroitic Kushites - El, Cv, Bw, Sp, Bd, Ps II/20d Ptolemaic - Kn, LH, Pk, Ax, Wb, Hd
I think that gives 12
