I note the upsurge in attempts to game live over the internet in these strange times & would welcome some guidance.
What is the best forum for this? Can you provide some idea of how one should approach this problem?

I am particularly interested in how I could host & umpire a game between two friends, with me providing the table, armies & moving the figures depending on the real time orders of the antagonists.

What software is needed? How can I best show the table to both sides & what would they need to be able to comply?

If anyone has any personal experience with this I would be grateful for any input.

I have found Vassal to work quite well.

possibly also www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:De_Bellis_Magistrorum_Militum (not tested).

The game does not implement rules, it just provides the pieces.
It is also not really pretty. But it works well and without any serious bugs, as I recall.
