At the end of October my painting mojo had vanished so I planned to relax and play some solo games. Then I had an idea for a short mini ‘campaign’ (really just a variation on a simple Portable Wargame pathway for creating a big ‘battle’ game) involving events in north Africa in 49BC and the Roman Republic civil war. This prompted me to think about my box of Romans, in my unpainted lead mountain. As a result my painting mojo returned!
And now, today, I made more progress towards completing my 100 Roman late republic Bd / Legionary 25/28+mm figures. (To be used alongside some 25mm Republican Romans I painted for the Punic Wars some 40 years ago.)
I finished the’ terrain’ on my 25 bases (each of 4 Bd / Legionary figures), with light brown dry brush then added ‘grass’ cover. And I painted the inner surface of their shields brown / wood like, turned them over after they dried, got the outer surface primed then later added a variety of base colours to the outer surface of their shields. (I had in mind using four Bd bases as a Legionary unit for non DBA rules like Armati or To The Strongest, as well as being able to use different colours to represent different legions in BIG DBA or different quality ‘blades’ in say DBMM.)
The shield painting was all much faster with a flat 1 cm wide brush. I even had time to touch up some areas where paint had rubbed due to handling in the finishing off their base terrain.
So a very satisfying couple of stints today at my painting table. And between coats drying I got a variety of mounted and on foot figures for Consuls, as well as a few mounted Legates, and some supporting lictors and eagle bearers de-flashed ready for priming to give me more ‘Generals’.
