LOMBARDS At the time I bought my extra Hunnic riders from Aventine Miniatures, I also bought some Lombard 28mm riders, lancers and command, (all in noble armour of Avar style). I wanted to start a 25mm DBA force so I deliberately didn’t buy their big 28mm horses, but then struggled to find any 25mm horses I was happy with so they got mounted on a mix of spare 28mm horses from (sold by Lancashire games), and some of the Lancashire Games own BIG 25mm (really 30mm) horses. The problem I did not foresee is that the charging lancer riders need horses with heads and neck low if you are going to position the two part lancer rider with his lance facing forwards. Additionally the separate (well sculpted shields) will hide all the beautifully sculpted armour if slung on their backs (not sure how else these can be positioned with two handed lancers) and I didn’t want to do this so I left them off! Similarly the bareheaded, unarmoured, horn blower in the command pack has horn in his right hand and the other left arm around his helmet which he is holding, so his shield could only be glued to his back. So after painting up these shields most got unused! The results can be seen below. CarlL

After a long hiatus I returned to the painting desk on Sunday - and in the process completed 1x4Lb and 2x4Bd for the Wars of the Roses English. I've had two elements on hold for this army for a while 1x3Kn spares left over when I pulled apart one of my old DBA Armies waiting for a chance to be reincorporated 1x3Ax (Irish) extra figures left over from a Norse Irish army painted for me by a friend.
This is probs the last bit of Painting I'll do before flying out on Wednesday.
Very much looking forward to Operation AntipoDBA as the countdown to exit Canberra ticks away
Cheers

Like your woad application (and much more) Claudermilk. I like how it stands out and adds to their 'presence' ... 'here I am and I am coming to get you' style! Have you used a bright blue or a blue over a lighter first application?

Carl, I started with my normal slap chop painting, so black primer then heavy white drybrush then Army Painter Crusader Skin contrast paint. From there I used normal Army Painter Crystal Blue for the woad. It's a bright but rich blue color that stands out nicely. I used my Army Painter Insane Detail brush, a magnifier and patience to apply.
I debated doing a Braveheart style facepainting on all the figures but decided a) it was a bit over the top and on the nose, and b) I didn't have the patience for that XD

Next up is II/81a and b (and d by default). After sorting figures now I really understand why those armies are so expensive. Each one is nearly 2 full armies and lots of Cv. All Khurasan castings & they look really nice on first look.

MY RETIREMENT PLAN was .....
Well I decided that when I retired (5 years ago now) that I would eliminate my 25mm ancients lead pile by painting them up, during the covid period (so about two years as it occured not long after I retired) I got side tracked by 20mm colonials, but if you don't tell anyone I won't. I think because I had a ready supply of solo games scenarios and rules to play in covid! Post covid I got side tracked by rebasing my 23/25mm Napoleonics. But since then I have notched up quite a few 25mm / 28mm ancient armies: Berbers, Carolingians, Spartacus, early Germans, Portuguese colonial / late medieval, West Sudanese, Parthians, more Sassanids, more Palmyrans, early Byzantines, more Late Romans, Huns, Heruls! Of course, in bringing these to mind (or list) I realise I keep adding to my lead mountain. So after my brief fling with a few Lombards I thought it was time to return to my lead pile and not buy any more, so I got out my box of Early Imperial Romans then realised I had put in there about 100 Civil War Romans (from Pompey v Caesar) over last year in various 28mm sizes (from Newline Mins and Crusader Mins). So the EIR went back in box and out came the Roman Civil War figures. There were enough infantry for 96 Roman HI (or 24 Bd)! Leaving aside Generals on horseback, camp figures (Civilians or Roman Legionary camp builders) and bolt throwers!! My oh my what collectomania toy soldiers and gaming can be!
Anyway enough of this navel gazing .... Last week I set about deflashing and priming these figures.
At first it was a bit uphill but now I have got 16 painted, and ready to stick on bases, another 32 are 70% painted and other 48 are deflashed, primed, had armour / helmets and base flesh coat painted!! The other others (generals on horseback or camp or bolt throwers) are still untouched!
My next problem will be basing them. The Newline 28mm are small enough to put four figures on a standard Bd base of 60mm x 20mm. But the Crusader Miniatures are huge 28mm, bit like most of the Berber spearmen I bought years back; so I think they will end up on deeper bases to try and accommodate four Bd figures, possibly 25mm or 30mm!!
Must send a letter to my younger self to (A) stop adding to lead pile (B) don't buy any BIG 28mm, too big for DBA bases!
Wish me luck convincing myself on these points of merit.
CarlL
PS Don't ask about the 15mm ancients thats another embarrassing lead mountain.... and another story .....

Well got 48 Crusader Mins., big 28mm figures painted. Got out some bases to fit them on, well a trial line up. I can get 4 swordsmen on a standard 60x20mm Bd base (for 25mm scale) and even 3 swordsmen and a pila thrower, but not four pila throwing Late Republican Romans by Crusader Mins; but the latter will fit on a 60x25mm deep base. Of course this dry run was without any shields attached! Not sure if it will work when shields are attached!
Next job the shields.

LOL, I can sympathize. Getting 4 Museum Miniatures Hoplites on a 40x20 base is challenging (don't even get me started on fitting for 8Sp). Sometimes you wonder if the cool, varied, dynamic poses that look great by themselves are worth it when you have to cram them on a DBA base (and try to make sure they can sit adjacent to another base of figures).

Hooray today I finished my hundredth Roman late republic 25/28mm Legionary figure !! Thats 25 DBA Bd elements or 6 Armati or TtS (my version) HI units or 12 Cohorts (in another 'unit size' version I have for TtS) ....
MIND I still have 100 shields (more or less) to de-flash, prime and paint !! (I usually do this alongside figures and stick the bare metal parts together before priming but the shields are that big it would have made painting the figures harder!)
Then I need to base them and add terrain to bases! (But this time I may do this before adding shields so I know I can get them on their bases!)

Roman Late Republicans take a step closer to tabletop action. Made more progress today, I got 100 figures stuck to bases; needed just a bit less than 100 shields which I have de-flashed and primed on inner surface only so far; got terrain texture ‘goop’ added to bases (after having to make a new mix, came out more yellow than I wanted, so some dry brushing needed to give it a lighter ochre base colour before adding grass etc). A few naff photos to illustrate progress. CarlL
