Yes, Sassanid Levy Spearmen are, in my mind, the perfect poster-boys of Hordes. But, I'm with Geoff here; their "Elbonian", domed hats, accurate or not, are just so quintessentially Sassanid that I could never use for anything else (except maybe CACS Sogdians). The more I looked at Khurasan's Khorasanian range, the more I felt that was the look I wanted for a rebuilt Khazar army. Order placed. The Khagenwagen will ride again. Oddly enough, that's exactly what I used them for.

Oddly enough, that's exactly what I used them for. Mazel Tov! We think alike in using KM's Khorasanian range for Khazars. What did you use for the optional Artillery piece? I went with Eric Donaldson's suggestion of KM's Late Roman / Early Byz bolt shooter. Probably the most sensible choice, tho' I was briefly tempted to go with some big, honker, Chinese rope-pull contraption. (Hey, they were along the Silk Road.) Curious what you opted for.

I didn't make myself clear in my original post. I used Essex's Sassanid spearmen (SA7) as the Hd element in my CACS Sogdian army.

Well, that project went nowhere. Turns out I didn't like the very Turkic look of the Korosanian foot from Khurasan Miniatures for the Khazar Levy Spearmen. They never got painted. I've come full circle and now prefer the Slavic look for the Khazar foot, as seen in the Khazars that Paulisper and others have recently painted. Orders placed for Essex Khazars and Xyston Rabbis.

I'm also considering re-doing my "Khagenwagen" ( CP Gen) after seeing this rendition of Khagen Bek's mobile throne, at about 09:00 in this You-Tube video about the Khazars (I'm sure it's actual, live camera footage from the 8th Century. In color even.) But how to build it? Okay, convert another Xyston " Antigonas on Palanquin" figure for the Khagen. But how to scratch-build that "wedding cake" wagon?

Good find If it was me I’d simply get something like a plain flatbed cart like one from here: www.keepwargaming.co.uk/cw-range---carts--wagons-360-c.aspThen add some balsa wood blocks to build it up. Im certainly going to add some head filled pikes to my somewhat plainer wagon I’m currently painting to dress it up a bit.

Guessing most everybody has seen Khurasan's FB post about their just-released range of Khazars. If not, here's the link. Mine should be en-route shortly.

The Khagen has a new ride. If you've bought (or looked at) Khurasan's Khazar range, you know it doesn't include a Khagenwagen. Khurasan notes that its use was dubious at best, historically, and that such models are understandably not cost-effective to produce. Customers "might" each buy one. Since no 3D-printer whizz has filled the void with mass-produced Khagenwagens, I resolved to scratch-build a CP Gen element last night. Fueled by a nice glass of wine and using the depiction shown at 9:01 into this You Tube documentary on the Khazars, here's what I came up with. Two Khurasan Royal Guard spearmen will stand behind the "Bek Buggy", as I'm calling it. A Jewish rabbi (Xyston) and musician, blowing the Shofar, flank the model, left and right. I didn't attempt the "skulls on spears" motif shown in the animation and mentioned in accounts. Couldn't think of a way to model that, and kinda morbid anyway. Instead, used a pair of standards from Khurasan's command pack. ![]()

Great creation paulhannah It was your link to that video that inspired me to add a skull pole to my Khazar Wagon. An old minifigs ‘asiatic wagon’ - Jewish motiffs added as decoration - can’t be seen from this angle sorry and a couple of dismounted mongol types as guards PS love the rabbi figure.

Goodness me, Ken. I really like that. Can you remember which company made the escorts?

Mazel Tov, Ken. Really outstanding rendition of the Khagenwagen. Well done!
The CP (Gen) is almost useless, in game terms, now that it can no longer shoot. It can, at least, lend side-support to the Royal Guard (Spear) element. Who cares (right?), if it looks gorgeous!
