Is there any restriction on placing camps less than one BW away from area terrain?
Thanks

If I'm not mistaken it also has to be in contact with your own board edge and inside the main deployment area (at least 4 BWs from either side edge).

For completeness, a camp also has to be in Good Going and can be in contact with a Waterway or on a beach rather than on the board edge. However, I was simply replying to the question "as set".

And I/we use 'not within 2BW of the edges', ie in the deployment zone (including the outer Cv/Ax/Ps etc zone).

Martin, that isn't what the rules say. A camp is not even an element. And if it contains a camp follower element, well that as to be at least 4BW from the edge. You are free to house rule as you see fit, but the exception is pretty clear. The deployment area is 4BW form either edge. Cv, Ps, LH and Ax get an exception. And only them.

Just wondering what the position would be if one chose to have an element of Ax in the camp.
I was taking a new player through the rules on Friday evening and when it came to positioning camps I simply left it that there was "some debate on this point".

Interesting analysis, Stevie. Are the cross hatched areas in Fig 1a part of the deployment area or not? And, if not, how can troops be deployed there? Of course, if troops can be deployed there, that would suggest it is part of the deployment area.
Further question. Does and army which is entirely LH and Ps have a different deployment area for the purposes of placing camps than and army which has no LH, Cv, Ps or Ax?

Does and army which is entirely LH and Ps have a different deployment area for the purposes of placing camps than and army which has no LH, Cv, Ps or Ax? Weeell Menacussecundus...it is a bit of a moot point I suppose. The dialogue accompanying figure 1a says:- “Any troops can be deployed in area which extends out from the base edge to a line 3 BW from the centre line and extending out 4 BW from the battlefield edge” This is labelled as the ‘Deployment Area’ in the diagram picture. It then goes on to say:- “Some troops types, Cavalry, Camelry, Light Horse, Auxilia, and Psiloi (and Mtd-Infantry - see FAQ), can also deploy in the cross-hatched area.” I’ve always taken this to mean that the above troops are special, and as an exception are allowed to deploy a little bit outside of the normal deployment area. If Camps were allowed to be placed 2 BW from a table edge, how would Camp Followers get in them? Camp Followers are not listed in the special exceptions mentioned above...you’d have a Camp with no-one defending it! (Only garrisons of Cities and Forts, not those in Camps, ignore these deployment restrictions - see figure 1a, last sentence) So I think the intention is that the normal deployment area, and therefore Camp placement, is 4 BW from the table sides. But as I said, it is a moot point. ..."must be in GOOD GOING (except Plough) on the rear edge..."
We take this to mean it can be placed partially on a plough piece.

Sorry Tony, but I disagree. "Except Plough" means...er...except plough! (So a Camp can be placed on any good going...except plough)Interestingly, Gentle Hills are good going...so technically they could have a Camp placed on them... ...except that Camps must be touching a base table edge, and hills must be 1 BW from all table edges. (Unless a Camp is placed on a Waterway inside it's own deployment area, so the hill IS 1 BW from a table edge...) This is the problem with these rules, they aren't written in English (or any common tongue as best I can tell.) For the record we are fine playing it any which way (we don't have an agenda) but "we" thought that since plough is not "GOOD GOING" what was trying to be articulated was that there was an exception for plough. Maybe some enlightened person on the design team can comment so that we don't change how we do things just to change back again.
