I have returned to the Annals of a Fortress by Violette le Duc. This is probably my 6th re-reading of this classic tome. Cheers, Took my time reading the Annals of a Fortress and gained a better understanding of trace italienne fortifications. I've moved on to the latest historical fiction by Adrian Goldsworthy. The City is the 2nd tome in the City of Victory series, but the 5th book in which centurion Ferox appears. I'm about a quarter way through and I'm really enjoying it. Cheers,

I took Wf(X) on a midweek break to Yarrawonga. In that time I managed to finish "The Shogun's Last Samurai Corps", and then quickly read the Osprey Wargame "Wars of the Republic"
I have now started "Legend of the Last Vikings - Taklamakan"

Yesterday I finished off "Legend of the Last Vikings - Taklamakan" by John Halstead
It had some interesting bits, but it read like one of my RPG campaigns from my misspent youth with Vikings trekking all the way from Norway to the Tarim Basin - the characters were not well fleshed out and the bad guys seemed to be bad for badness sake with little motivation for why they zeroed in on the heroes, and of course the great failing in any narrative, they seemed to be able to pop up to attack ahead of the good guys who had expended great effort to reach the destination. There were some great moments in poor edit checking with numerous references to a 'bread role' but the best remains the appearance of the Hepthalite "Empirical Guard"
Moving on I am now reading 'Warfare in the Modern World 1990-2014' by Jeremy Black - part of the Routledge Warfare and History series
Cheers

I finished 'Warfare in the Modern World' last week then picked up "Dead Man's Land" by Rob Ryan which is a murder mystery set in the trenches of WWI with a reimagined Dr Watson as the sleuth. Quite good
I am now trying to read 'Paradise on Earth' a publication by ICUN (UN Conservation Foundation) which is a catalogue of National Parks and reserves - I am trying to slavishly read the books I purchased and catalogued in order and this one is the next in line (from the December 2021 Lifeline Bookfair) - very pretty pictues.
It is too bulky a tome to transport, so I have also started "Blood and Bronze" by Paddy Docherty - an account of the British war against Benin in the 19th Century.

Finished book eleven of the Last Kingdom series.
Switching gears, I am halfway reading a hefty tome, “The Dutch Army and the Military Revolutions 1588 – 1688” by Olaf van Nimwegen.
The book details the rise of the Dutch military during the Stadshouder period of Maurits, its decline after the Peace of Munster and finally the revitalisation during William III.

While I am still working my way through 'Paradise On Earth' at home, I also finished off 'Blood and Bronze' over the weekend whilst at a skating competition that the younger of the (not so) little warbands was competing and volunteering at.
'Blood and Bronze' is a very compelling read.

Still pushing through 'Paradise On Eart' at home, but have been out and about so have had to take more manageable biblioburdens with me - in short order I have finished "Pirate: The Buccaneer's Unofficial Manual" by Stephen Turnbull "Armies of the Ancient Near Near East" by Stillman and Tallis (found at the MOAB Bring & Buy for a princely sum of $5) and am now about a quarter through "Ninja: The (Unofficial) Secret Manual" another by Stephen Turnbull in the excellent and humourous Unofficial Manual series
Cheers

Great book, too 👍🏼👍🏼 I could not believe my luck Martin just over 2 years ago I saw a collection of the Armies and Enemies series in a secondhand book shop and reached for the Near East volume, only to recoil in horror at its price (around $75) I went back a couple of months later after retiring, getting 33 years of accumulated long service paid out (so had Mad Money) but it was gone by then. I saw the book in the annexe to the Bring and Buy on the Friday when I was dropping off my for sale stuff, and was keen to get my mitts on it, (at just about any price), but the stall did not open until the following midday and initially for pre paid tickets. I was playing DBA upstairs and couldn't get in there until the mid afternoon - to find it still there and at such a low price - Fortune's Favourite Cheers

After finishing "Ninja: The (Unofficial) Secret Manual" I am now partway through "The First World Empire: Portugal, War and Military Revolution" with an ensemble of contributors and a foreword by Jeremy Black which looks at the military aspects of the Portuguese state from the Fifteenth to Eighteenth Centuries. It is a more recent addition to the Routledge Warfare and History series.
Of course at home I am still plodding through "Paradise on Earth".
Cheers
