Played 2 DBA 3.0 games yesterday. Early imperial Roman V Parthians and Early Imperial Roman V Ancient British. Very enjoyable games I expect I made mistakes with the rules but nothing serious. We are here to support you as best we can! I have been playing DBA since it first appeared more than 25? years ago. I still make mistakes. Ooops... I think I may have just undermined my own offer of support. LOL... Joe Collins

SO, Robert... though one game isn't much of a sample... what is your opinion... Joe Collins

Question: Is 3 Bd overpowered? We haven't seen it much in our local gaming club or in the tournaments I have run... Still 3Bd moves quickly and suffers little against most foot and mounted elements... is it too powerful? Joe Collins We have not had an opportunity to use the Celtiberians. Next Tuesday we meet to test the siege game rules and will add a straight battle between them and the consular army. Will let you know how they fare.
Robert: I look forward to your report. Joe Collins

...during DBM time 3Bd used to be bad going blade, quite a useful troop type but under DBA3 it seems to be a poor troop type... I'm not sure I understand. Why to you think they are poor? The are blazing fast... QK Knights on a ties... and they fight foot at a +5? Have you seen them easily defeated? Joe Collins

Joe: Also, read Simon MacDowall's Clontarf scenario for his Comitatus rules. I found it. Excellent writeup... Thanks! Joe Collins

Joe, I dug out my book on "Irish Battles A military History of Ireland" by G.A. Hayes-McCoy. It list 16 battles from 1014 to 1798. The first four: Clontarf 1014, Dublin 1171, Dysert O'Dea 1318 and Knockdoe 1504 fall within the time periods of DBA. At Clontarf, there doesn't seem to be much difference between the Irish & the Vikings. Dublin features separate battles between Normans, Irish & Vikings. Irish tactics are hard to duplicate in DBA, because they used road blocks and plashing in heavy forest. Yes, I am most interested in the 4Ax vs 3/4Bd matchup... This of course is the classic Viking vs Irish fight. My question is, "Does 4Ax operate correctly in DBA?" For purposes of Greek/Roman combat, they are close in most situations... though Cannae remains difficult. I like the new Ax against mounted. Against foot, I still am unsettled. Here are some ideas I am toying with... 3Bd only moves 2BW in rough/bad going. Ax and Ps may recoil either their base depth or their base width... thus breaking contact from foot. Joe Collins

Interesting list of armies. Where are the elephants in the podium placings? Number 9! I was initially worried about the elephants in DBA 3. Now I am not sure worried... while better than 2.2... they aren't the dominating force I feared. BTW... we saw a double elephant defeat from a flank attack. The flank elephant turned to face... and recoiled into the other elephant... an ugly turn for the Carthaginians. Joe Collins

I am wondering how these play... Clontarf is the best known battle... but do they work well?

Only one +1, ie not cumulative. Martin Martin has got it! "some “Solid” elements add +1 when in frontal close combat in good going against enemy foot if at least one flank edge is in mutual side edge and mutual front corner contact with a friendly element" The max is +1. Joe Collins

Tom Thomas and I are trying hard to push 25mm DBA here in the states. The new Perry boxes make late Medieval easy for 25mm. Most of my demo games are in 25mm. In Great Battles... Enguingatte and Brunanburh are 25mm... Bagradas is in 15mm.

For those with limiting budgets or who just like to try a product before purchase... Great Battles is now available as I initially promised from Keith McNelly's excellent website. Please remember that all proceeds are now being donated monthly to the Society of Ancients in honor of Phil and Sue Barker. So, if you download the book and like it...please purchase it. The SOA is a worthy cause. Keith's website is found here.... ancientwargaming.wordpress.com/Thanks for making the book so successful! Joe Collins
