Nothing like a swastica on an Elephant! 100% for historical accuracy - let the wokeists protest! Has that one got an 88mm trunk?

A new idea! I absolutely don’t hate it and want to try it out. I get the historical logic behind it…..BUT how does this mesh with the +1 for rear support? Might be OP if +3 and overlaps…..but were LH in that situation stronger than Cav?
Phantom Overlaps - agree. I get the logic of the intent but not the execution of the rule.

Today I finished my Apulian and Bruttian armies to complete the full set of forces for a 2nd Punic Wars campaign. Originally intended as 2 x 3/4Ax allies to nerf the Polybian Romans this army kind of expanded. Because they were allies for an existing army I used Xyston miniatures - which are lovely. I had bought a couple of packs but they lay unpainted for a while until I figured I could use some spare Greek cavalry, convert some slingers into javelinmen and use some junk Italian peasants to create the cadre of an army. A couple more packs and a LBMS order gave me the 3xCav, 9x3Ax, 4x4Ax/Sp & 2xPs I needed. Still short of the 2x7Hd I’d need for “All Options” but might get them in a future order.
These figures are lovely and make a cracking little army. No armour and not much equipment made them quick to paint but I made each one look different so that took time. Then I found that the LBMS decals fitted the Hoplite shields OK but not the disc peasant shields - so I had to do some detailing work to make them look good. All in all a pretty little army.
Now I have no pretensions - this army isn’t going to win an Open Tournament. It is crap! Anything with that much Aux is pretty hopeless. BUT when I play my son or a newbie I often use armies that are hopeless so I can get a game where I have to work for a victory (or at least an honourable defeat) against the odds. Plus if I ever use “Matched Pairs” these figures will nerf the Polybians so that Hannibal has a chance. Also I can now run a full 2nd Punic War Campaign.
Next up on the painting table are two more two crap armies. Estonian and Prussian enemies for my Teutonic Knights in the Northern Crusades. This time Gladiator minis - which look rather nice!

I actually acquired a D6 die from a DBA competition. It took me some time to work out that it had been modified very cleverly. The owner had altered the die, introducing a bias so it favoured throwing a higher number of fives, and a lower number of twos, it also had the side effect of reducing ones. David Constable I think the death penalty is still on the statute books for such a heinous crime!

I expect I'll be there. I needed an excuse to paint some Scythians - even if I take something else in the end. You can never have too many Scythians!

I finished painting my II/4a Warring States Chinese - Ch’in Army yesterday. This was an Army pack from Essex I had bought before the pandemic so only had figures for the single army list. However, I picked up some more stuff from Essex at Warfare yesterday to make the remaining Yueh, Chao and Others army lists which will hit my painting table at speed to give another 4 army lists.
I thought that in finishing the Ch’in I’d pass the milestone of 200 Army lists complete only to find I’d miscounted an it was actually my 201st army list completed. Anyway 200 not out - so not bad!
Next up on the painting table are the Apulian and Bruttian armies using Xyston miniatures. These are pretty hopeless armies but will complete all the sides for the Second Punic Wars as well as giving the Polybians some Aux allies for the hills. Also with 200 army lists complete the number of “good” armies I don’t already have has shrunk quite a lot.
Which brings me to the question of whether I should replace armies I already own with newer, better minis? My Macedonians, Indians, Greeks and Successors are well over 35 years old and from Chariot Miniatures (which were state of the art back then) but I look at what is available now from Xyston and Museum etc and am thinking about it. The rot will start with the Thessalians, my favourite Greek Army, which someone bought me as a Xyston boxed set not realising I already had it. Beautiful figures! So tempting!

I think the map covers the Nile’s first and second cataracts so I guess Nubians would be fine.

Always nice to have a map but I reckon that map is cropped by about 400 miles on its eastern edge. West of the eastern edge of the Caspian Sea is roughly in line with Basra and Riyadh so a few more eastern and Arab armies may come into play. However, Stevie is the final judge on army validity.

I've completed batch 2 of the Lombards this morning and a few extra elements to allow me to field a legal Anglo-Norman army. So it's on with the 3rd and final batch of 4x3Kn plus an extra Goth 1x3Kn which will complete my Lombard lists and Attila's Huns when finished. Good going Haardrada. You’ll soon be onto those Spring and Autumn Chinese!

I just finished painting III/52 Norman (West Frankish) and III/53 East Frankish armies. I won’t lie - I found doing them quite a slog and didn’t really love the Forged in Battle miniatures I was using. However, the LBMS decals brought them up a bit. Still now they are finished they do look good and it’s another 2 army lists in their boxes.
Next up I’m off to the Orient and back a millennia to paint the Ch’in.

I built both options - I normally play 6 x 4Bd as it’s stronger but not sure anyone would complain if you used a mix.

With all this discussion about presentation of rule sets I thought this was interesting: youtu.be/b3F7EOgtDbM?si=vVJdMSnBiOfx4RzNI have no connection at all with this team but coming from the US I thought that it gives a broad perspective. Also with a Warhammer background I was expecting the authors to be a bit biased. However, I was pleasantly surprised that: DBA - the oldest set of rules being reviewed was viewed very positively. There were no negative comments about the writing of DBA. Substance was preferred to style - it wasn’t all about presentation! The more “boutique” games were called out for what they are. ADLG was trashed as being only good for competitions. However, I note that Triumph was lumped in with the DBA rulesets. What does anyone else make of this? Anyone tried the other two recommended rulesets: Age of Hannibal and To the Strongest?
