Cypriot and Phonecian Ofds and Sods completed - but the lure of Napoleonics has been too strong in the new year. I’ve got an Italian Division on the painting table.

Technically they should be on 15mm bases unless the heroic figure size means they don’t fit or they are based for different or earlier rules. Basing them on 20mm deep bases for tactical advantage (recoiling back to groups) or for aesthetic reasons is (according to RAW and IMHO) a bit of gamesmanship.
Does it matter? Not really. There are swings and roundabouts with both and it depends on the army make-up and situation which is better. However, where possible I try to stay within the letter of the law when it comes to basing.
P.S. this issue is more pronounced with Wwg which can be based on 40mm-80mm deep bases. Would it be legal to mix these in a single army? Debate!

Heavy chariots full of Hoplites that can dismount as Spears. They are really rather nice! Always feel the list writers missed a trick with the Kyreneans - if ever there was a unit which would’ve been ideally classified as Mtd. Infantry, these were it. Mtd.Sp would make far more sense than HCh…these guys were definitely NOT in the category of ‘hard charging heavy chariots’, more like horse-drawn hoplite delivery wagons 😳 To be honest Martin - I don’t really know the history of how they operated but I suspect you are right. With HCh//Sp they make a tidy little army especially against historical opponents.

Carthaginian HCh but I swapped out the crew for Hoplites.

Sounds fun paddy649. Is it 'taxi' as in unit of phalanx or 'taxi' (as per modern parlance) and battle carts or chariots for your Kyrenean commanders and heroes? CarlL the ignorant. Heavy chariots full of Hoplites that can dismount as Spears. They are really rather nice!

Well I promised to stick to odds and sods this month so I’ve just finished 4 Kyrenean Greek battle taxis. Next up some Phoenicians.

>> First up will be Kyreneans and Phoenicians before some Armenians. What figures are you using for the Phoenicians, Paddy? It is all Magister Militum (Chariot) which I bought just before they closed down. Basically I have 4 boxes full of Chariot minis covering Indians, Alex, all Greeks, all Successors (and Greaco-whatever’s) etc. So these were the specific add-ins I need to expand those figures to cover a number of other, earlier army lists. So the Phoenicians fill-ins are just their early Carthaginians. I didn’t want to mix them with my other Carthaginians as all my Punic War figures are Xyston.

I’ve just finished upgrading my Warring States Ch’in army to a Warring States all sub-lists army by painting the extra Crossbow, Blade and 3Pk I needed. Not quite an “all options” army yet as I’d need more 5Hd and 7Hd for that. However, no space in my Chinese box which is full on Tang and Sui also. All my Warring States are Essex miniatures which are OK, cover all the bases, but slightly dull. But they are solid and quick to paint - so can’t complain.
Next up, and for the rest of the month, is odds and sods. Yes I’ve been shamed into painting up my fill-ins for multiple armies. First up will be Kyreneans and Phoenicians before some Armenians. No full new armies will hit my painting table until the new year! Promise!

I'm in the midst of a "odds and sods" painting frame of mind, either bringing armies up to 3.0 compatibility, or painting additional elements for morphing purposes. I’d love to know how to get into that mindset! I’ve got quite a backlog of figures that will permit morphs, expand to “all options” or add HOTT elements to armies. But whenever it comes to painting them or a new army it is always the new army that wins out! …..and don’t ask about how many camps I need to make!

The Ace looks like Gauls - too many clothes for Galatians. Two looks like Xyston Companions. Three, Four, Five and Six looks like Steppe armies possibly Irregular. Seven look like Chariot but not obviously Classical Indians - Kushite Egyptians is a good call! I can’t place the Elephant - but don’t think it’s Chariot.

CarlL - me too. Some idiot once thought it would be good to give me a term of Greek and 3.5 years of Latin. I hated it and flunked every exam! …but introduce me to Alexander, Cicero and Pompey and I was teaching the languages to myself. So following your example I’ll claim the title “Pictor mille” for this year!
Anyways - what projects is everybody trying to finish before Christmas and/or planning for next year? Me? I’ve got the rump of Warring States Chinese to make my Ch’in army up to “all options” before Christmas. Next year I’m planning to “close the box” and paint the outstanding armies needed to my finish some campaign boxes. So that is Lithuanians for the Northern Crusade box, LAP for the Alexander box and both Vikings and Anglo-Danish for the 1066 box.

WOW! paddy649, three DBA armies in one month is great work. CarlL I do think it is somewhat of a slap in the face of those of us who struggle do do three in a year. Grest work indeed. Oh! I’m bigging it up a bit - they are all pretty small armies. However, the trick is to have a painting box ready to go so that whenever the long haired General goes out you can be painting within a couple of minutes. All those “just nipping outs” don’t half add up!

I finished my Prussians and Estonians today. My third army this month! Gladiator miniatures were a joy to paint! Lots of detail made up for slightly limited poses. I tried to stick to a mainly white/unbleached linen colour scheme but it was so dull I added some coloured piping. Hand painted shields were a nice change. In the end the army sparkled quite nicely.
These are simple armies, mostly fast Warband/Aux with a sprinkling of Cav, solid Warband, Psloi or fast Crossbow. Not deadly armies but good opponents for my Teutonic Knights who will give them a run if the table is full of bad going. They will hopefully make for good matched pairs.
Next up are the rest of the figures needed to expand my Ch’in army out to the “all options” Warring States army list. I always like painting Chinese armies.
