Over the weekend I based the figures I painted on the Friday and so now have a legally fieldable Nubian army - I just need to finish 3 more each of 3Bw and Ps to complete the army.
Today I finally finished an element of 4Kn for my West Sudanese - these are the exquisite Eureka figures and are heartbreakers. I had to take my time putting in stripes of various colours and then dabbing a bright colour (yellow or white) into the triangular shaped patches. God knows how many strips of Nubians, Communal Italians and others were completed while I slowly struggled with this one.
I then quickly finished 1xSp and 1x4Bd for the West Sudanese. I still have a way to go before this army is up to Purple standards - the addition of so many Sp as well as converting the 3Bd to 4Bd and the additional 4Kn made this a long hard task, but I have plans to put them on the table at MOAB this year.

On the weekend I finished "A Shadowed Evil" and moved on to the final book in the series (No. 17) "The Devil's Cup" which brings the characters into the orbit of King John's final days.
Ideally I will have finished this book before my mega order from The Book Depository hits my doorstep

'Achtung Schweinehund: A Boy's Own Story of Imaginary Combat' by Harry Pearson . Rereading after a dozen years. Excellent account of growing up (if that's the right term 😊) as a wargamer through 60's /70's and onwards. A crackin' read, and all very 'familiar', as we're about the same vintage 😊 Thoroughly recommended. This is one of the best books ever written Martin
About six years ago one Saturday morning I saw the back of the book at a seconhand bookshop and was intrigued by the Commando logo - so picked it up and read a passage. I hurriedly purchased it and started the book. By the following afternoon I was torn between wanting to finish the book and not wanting it to end.
And yes, but for the setting being in England rather than Australia I could have sworn that a version of my life was being catalogued in its pages.

So this morning I finished "The Winter King" and I am pleased to say that it was a huge improvement on the last two - there was a proper murder mystery, with suspects, false leads and genuine motives. The supernatural elements were kept to a minimum and by and large the characters behaved logically.
I have two more to go to finish the series and so will be starting the next book "A Shadowed Evil" over lunch today - but like the novels of Ben Kane and Conn Igguldon - having pushed through to the conclusion of the first series written I am unlikely to venture into any more of Alys Clare's work.
(side note - I actually haven't finished Igguldon's "Emperor" series yet - but I did purchase the full set and will get through them at some time).

And today the last Sp element for the Communal Italians is done
Once based I can field a legal army with this set - but I still have the CWg to finish before I have my preferred list

Once I finished "Nubia Under The Pharoahs" I went back to the Hawkenlye series and between Thursday and last night I polished off the next two "Rose of the World" and "The Song of the Nightingale" - still a little disappointing as the murder mysteries are not front and centre in the books (if there at all) and the Deux et Machina of the "Forest People" and the spirit of one of the earlier characters seem to drive the solution.
Still - pushing on as best I can with the next one "The Winter King" which looks to be returning to the older style and might be a better read.

Communal Italian...army is now in the home stretch - I just have...the Carriocco (or 2 of them - one on 40x80 for a camp and one on 40x40 for battle) Two Carriocco! Very impressive. You can never have enough Command Wagons
But seriously - when I put the figures together for this army a Carriocco was considered a WWg and the WWg was restricted to 40x80 bases.
By the time I was ready to paint it the world had changed - a CWg/Lit/CP can be either 40x40 or 40x80 and whilst I consider it is sometimes worth keeping a WWg on the larger base for the extended shooting arc, I have always considered that the Command Post should go to 40x40 so that other troops can get around them.
I had hoped to put the Carriocco modelI had down as two pieces - wagon and attendants (40x40) and then Yoke and Oxen on a second base. However this particular model had the yoke and front axle cast as one piece to be stuck underneath the rest of the Wagon Model. It was not conducive to being cut and adjusted so I finally made up a second Wagon model sans Yoke and Oxen to be the CWg and am keeping the other one to be the camp.

After Saturday's effort put some new strips close to finishing I rounded them off at lunch today - 1x3Bw and 3xPs for the Nubians and one more Sp for the Communal Italian.
The last Sp for the Italians is all but done (Shield Design and final wash) but I had already pushed the long lunch barrow as far as I could.

I built up a set of Biblical Era armies for a Trojan War campaign (approx. 1250BC)
Mycenaean - using figures cast by Hall of Ancient Warriors Trojan - Essex New Kingdom Egyptian (a list) - Peter Pig (mostly - but with some Essex Chariots) Babylonian - Essex Syro Canaanite - Hall of Ancient Warriors Ugaritic - mix of anything Early Hebrew - some Venexia but Essex and others thrown in Early Libyan - a mix of Chariot, Essex and Corvus Belli Sea Peoples - Hall of Ancient Warriors Assyrian - Essex Bedouin (Midianite) a mix of ranges Makkan - a mix of ranges Hittite - Essex
I can recommend the Chariot (aka Magister Militum) range for biblical figures - these ones stand out in my Libyan army and likewise the Nubians that I am currently building include a good sized batch from that range. The command figures are exquisite.
The Nubians are going to be part of a campaign set for "The Great Revolt" (2250BC) and I have already built up a Sumerian army which as a core of figures from Magister Militum padded out with Eureka straddle cars and some Essex archers.

Today my Geek Bar (The Copper Dragon) hosted "Crafternoon" so I took my paints and my toys down and sat with a couple of others and powered through some more toys.
My West Sudanese received 1x4Bw adn 1xSp and the Communal Italian gained another Sp element.
A great way to spend Saturday Afternoon

Today I finished off 1x7Hd and 1xSp for the Communal Italian
This army is now in the home stretch - I just have 3xSp and the Carriocco (or 2 of them - one on 40x80 for a camp and one on 40x40 for battle) and they can join the ranks of the campaign set. The nicely made Carriocco that I plan to use as a camp is designed so that I can't separate the wagon from its yoke and put it on as two 40x40 pieces.

D'oh !!!!!
Sunday 21st of July - this is what happens when I stay up late watching "Where Eagles Dare" and then start on "The Omega Man"
Reality has been altered to fix the problem.
Now only Gregorius' quoting of my message is the only evidence of that alternate reality

I put in a grand effort over the ANZAC day public holiday and made plenty of headway with the six new strips to paint. More Communal Italians are close to completion and one element of West Sudanese 4Kn are looking less like I have ignored them.
I did finish 1x3Bw, 1x3Wb and 1xPs for the Nubians. These guys just roll off the line at a rate of knots.
