Last year was the first Welsh Open I had missed since I started playing DBA Tournaments at Penarth 10 or so years ago. I really enjoyed the "return". No longer worrying about succumbing to hypothermia in a squash court and blessed with daylight, it is a great venue. I miss the train journey, but I do not have as long a drive as many others. For me it was a return to old times, in that I played all those regulars I first played on the "circuit". I took Cassander, or Kassandros,
if you prefer. Why? I could not think what to bring and current painting projects are taking far too long. So, having been toying with a trip to Thessaloniki, having just finished reading Errington's "A History of the Hellenistic World" (recommended for the history rather than battle reports), I went for the founder of that city! Kn general, Cv, El, Ps, 4x4Pk, 4x4Ax felt like a balance of speed, heavy hitting, good and bad going...
I was drawn in a group with Martin Smith's North Welsh with Feudal allies, Ollie Currant's Henry Tudor and Richard Pulley's Anglo-Danish with Welsh ally. All of my five games on the day were thoroughly entertaining and absorbing for me, I will aim to put some battle reports on another thread.
The group finished with three of us on two wins; I went through to the semi-finals based on better nett element difference, having had two strong margin victories and a 4-3 loss to Ollie and Henry Tudor, decided by an artillery piece levelling my pachyderm at 3-3.
The semi-final was against Colin O'Shea's Hatrans. A road down one side was cunningly used by them to spin the battle through 90 degrees, but to no avail in the end.
The final brought on Arnaud and dice-rolling star, Ash, Marmier, with their fast foot Guti.
Luck was with Cassander and the Welsh Open trophy to boot!
Many thanks to Penarth and District Wargames Society for an excellent event and to Alan Davison for running the Tournament, and to Magister Militum for supporting by providing prizes...and of course to all the competitors, all too many of whom I failed to catch up with on account of lengthy, thrilling games with little time in between.
