Played another solo playtest game of DBSYW this afternoon using my old 15mm figures. Some of these are over 30 years. Just 30 years old? I’ve got unpainted lead older than that (and, sadly, it looks like most of it will remain unpainted).Oh well, that’s wargaming for you. Cheers, Geoff

My first stop would be Haythornthwaite's "Uniforms of the Peninsular War 1807-14", published by Blandford Press. It's pretty old now, but you should be able to find a second-hand copy at a reasonable price. For first impressions of the armies and a general “what they looked like” you can’t beat the Haythornthwaite book. And, as menacussecundus says, you should be able to pick up a decent copy fairly cheaply. Well worth the investment. Cheers, Geoff

Lovely stuff CarlL. A really colourful army. How successful they’ll be on the tabletop battlefield is another matter. Let us know how you get on.
Cheers,
Geoff

How would one mob be faster than another? How would one mob be inferior to another? Can anyone provide historical examples of either? Two examples, both from IV/64b. Medieval French jacquerie - 5Hd - eager and willing to get to grips (primarily to destroy their enemy, the French nobility). Peasant levy - 7Hd - would “rather not be here” on the battlefield, but have ‘umbly followed their Lords and masters. Ignoring the wargaming aspect for a moment, I suspect these would all effectively be the same group of people. The levies are the peasants “doing as they are told” but, when the peasants had finally decided to revolt, then suddenly they were eager to fight the nobles. Just my two pen’orth. Geoff

Martin - which rules? Heaven forbid I’ve thought that far ahead.
Maybe DBA-HX, or The Portable Wargame (possibly even the FP3x3PW variant), or One Hour Wargame or Alan Saunders HotT inspired “Liberated Hordes”. TBH I’d overlooked IGaBC - in my defence I’ll claim ‘cause it’s a good few years later.
DBx basing is always a useful standard to adhere to - even with my “1/2 size” basing. And, as I mentioned previously, I mostly game solo - so, as long as I’m happy…
Rather than just stick to one particular campaign I thought I’d keep the uniforms fairly generic, so I can fight pretty much any of these wars and be reasonably “in-the-ballpark” as far as uniforms go.

FWIW - next on my radar is 2mm Irregular Miniatures strips for the various Wars of Liberation in South America in the early 19th century. I’ll be basing these on 20mm frontage & 10/15mm depth (depending whether infantry or cavalry). So effectively these troops will be on 1/2 size DBA bases. I could even scale up and bunch 4 bases together to make a “standard” size DBA base element. Games would be playable on a 12” square battlefield, which isn’t going to require too many terrain features. Easily portable. Cost should be relatively low - my plan is for 8-12 infantry strips, 4-6 cavalry strips and a couple of light artillery pieces per side (Royalists and Patriots). Errrr… the only thing is I have zero painting ability, so base & prep figure bases and then have to get a “proper painter” to paint ‘em. At least this way there’s a chance they’ll make it onto the tabletop, rather than just adding to the mountain of unpainted lead… Cheers, Geoff

Just about halfway through a large 2mm War of the Spanish Succession Allied Army, French still to start. Be using them with Horse, Foot and Guns How large is 2mm? Baldie - I think (but don’t quote me on this) that they’re about 1/3 the size of 6mm figures. But I could be wrong… 🤣😂

Thanks. I can now press on and base the Goblin lurkers. I’ll go with 25mm depth as I’m already “off script” with just having 30mm frontages anyway. I already have Elves based on 30mm frontage, as enemies for the greenskins. Thanks again Piyan Glupak.

Hi, I’m away from the rule book at the moment but I’m basing some painted 6mm Orcs/Goblins and need to know the correct base depth for lurkers. Thanks in advance, Geoff - “elliesdad”
ps / to complicate matters, as my Irregular Miniatures castings are (mostly) 25mm wide this doesn’t really fit in with HotT’s 40mm frontage. I’m almost exclusively a solo gamer, so not a problem, so I’ve based the rest of the greenskins on a 30mm frontage base - and will be reducing things to roughly 3/4 of the “correct size”. FWIW - I’ve based the warband on 30x20, wolf-riders on 30x25 and the hordes and behemoth on 30x30.

The MY miniatures are priced very cheaply, so I suspect you may well need to “risk” an order. You will likely find some figures are odd/unusable - but you’ll also find others that are real beauties. The challenge is to “sort the wheat from the chaff” and build an army. Some of Mick’s armies are of the lesser well known/unusual variety which you cannot find elsewhere. As I mentioned above, Mick’s prices are very, very reasonable (compared to many other manufacturers) so do yourself a favour and place an order. Hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised. Let us know how you get on.

Kennington Miniatures used to make some. Sadly they seem to have disappeared now. SHQ carries some 20mm Kennington ranges, but not the 15mm ones ☹️ Cheers, Geoff

My opponent’s pretty dodgy, too, Geoff…verging on the schizophrenic, in fact (“…oh no I’m not….” .panto season comes early 😶) Oh well… if it’s pantomime then HE’S BEHIND YOU. 😀 Jeez - I’m still struggling with getting the “quotes” function right.

Having had another look, I’m very tempted by the option of using a grid (I also play ‘The Portable Wargame’ by Bob Cordery, which is grid based…usually solo. Simplicity and clarity are a very high priority for me, especially for solo gaming)... I mostly play solo too. Whilst I am ok with that I find that my “opponent” is a most devious chap and bares watching closely… 😉😂 Cheers, Geoff
