I have not heard or read anything much about Phil Barker lately. I was wondering if he is okay and what project he is currently engaged in. I appreciate he must be in his late 80's now. Are there any updates?

Over the weekend I took a break from my current English Civil War project and tackled another civil war using DBA 3.0. I played two games of York versus Lancaster in the War of the Roses. Both times I played Lancaster. Won one and lost one. It took me a awhile before to get to grips with DBA 3.0. Before the battles I re-read the rules and for the action I used the quick reference sheet courtesy of the Society of Ancients. Both battles were thoroughly enjoyable. I like the new terrain set up, deployment and move rates. In fact I liked and felt comfortable with it all. I will shortly be commencing a WoR campaign using the rules I have detailed on my web page under Campaigns. www.spanglefish.com/solitarywargamer

I have recently come across Peter Dennis' War of the Roses book of paper soldiers, published by Helion. The figures are 28mm and buying the book gives you permission to copy them for personal so that you can cut out and make your own armies. Infantry are on 40mm wide by 30mm bases so two side by side could make a DBA base. Mounted figures, artillery, flags and banner and some scenic items are also included. The figures look very similar to the illustrations on the Perry plastics boxes - not surprising as Peter did those as well. There are also books for ECW, 1066 and the Roman invasion of Britannia. Even if you don't want to make the figures, the book is a good resource for painting inspiration and the flags. When I have done all my snipping I will get snapping and post some pics. Regards Simon For one I would be very interested in how they turn out. I have seen these books advertised and have been tempted.

Greeting all, I have been AWOL since DBA3 came out, no because I dislike DBA 3, but I moved out of Melbourne to a retirement are by the sea and have no one to kill lol. Did DBA 3 take off?, how is the health of DBA currently? ...anything I should know?. regards Kingo Well as you can see this forum is pretty lively. DBA 3.0 seems settled more now with less wrangle over the differences with previous versions. Plenty of competitions seemed to be advertised. Myself, I have spent a great deal of time building my English Civil War forces and fighting Skirmish and medium size battles using a varity of rules including DBA-RRR. As I play solo moving to a retirement area on the coast would suit me fine!

I had a similar feeling when an Ancient British Army ruptured my Early Imperial Roman line. The British light horse harassed and drew off the Roman Auxilia whilst the chariots kept the Roman Cavalry busy.
The Celtic warband then struck destroying the Roman cohorts and over running the artillery.
Unlike you i did not have the presence of mind to take pictures!

I have just finished watching the "Last Kingdom" on Netflix.
The next series starts tomorrow Thursday 23rd February on the BBC.
Well worth watching! I also last year read the whole book series, well worth reading. Do both and show your support for King Alfred and fight against the pagan Danes. Not of course forgetting Lord Uthred, a mixed up kid who was Saxon, then an Dane and now fights anyone who can help get his land back. Off you all go to fight the Danes, I don't mind staying here and fore going the glory. Someone has to make sure the ale house is safe and the serving wenches are happy. The things I do for Wessex and England!

I am looking to place an order for some 28mm Pirates from Irregular.
I have this crazy idea of using some of my English Civil War figures and sending them to the Caribbean to flush out and put down some Buccaneers!
Once current project is finished I will create a fictional island and flesh out a campaign using my DB-RRR adaptation, One Hour ECW adaptation and Pikemans Lamnest for the small skirmishes.

Just a quick question.
Why do we wargame?
For me I like to try and represent history on the table top.
But what is the appeal to everyone else.
Perhaps modelling is the drive and wargaming a secondary activity.
Or a love of tactics and planning.
They say we all need a hobby. But why wargaming?

Reminds me of the kid at Christmas who when asked what gift he would like for Christmas replied he would love an Action Man, the Jungle Fighter, desert fighter or whatever.
His Father, being somewhat tight in the money department was horrified when he saw the price of Action Man.
Anyway Christmas arrives and our kid tears open the packaging of his present to find a colourful box emblazoned with the Action Man logo, but is horrified when he opens the box to find nothing inside.
He turns to his Father who said "Well son, that is the Action Man Deserter"
