I started batch two of the Medieval Germans this morning....6x4Bd(including 4 dismounted Kn),prepped and undercoated.π
Carll you would think that by adding a further six elements you would be nearly finished, but with four of the next elements being dismounted Kn I'd only actually have seven of the permitted elements that I can place on the table ready...it just looks like a small step when actually you are going a good way to completing the army as batch 3 consists of only five elements.π

Cheers Haardrada. I forgot to add that I had been seeking help over on the Society of ancients forum. One of the ideas I am pursuing is: "What "might" the Spartacus army have used as banners or symbols to separate them from their Roman enemies?" I came up with ideas that I could create (a hypothetical) banner depicting Dionysus on a vexillum, under the symbol of a snake. The gladiators in Italy are reported to have followed the cult of Dionysus (aka Bacchus to the Romans) so I set about searching images of archaeological finds depicting Greek (or Roman) ideas of the persona of Dionysus, mostly on vases or mosaics. Hopefully one such example attached. The snake comes from the same cult being associated with snakes and displays by followers of the cult of their courage by holding snakes. It is reported that Dionysus wife was a 'seer' and follower of this cult. So she may make an appearance to on his command base! I have been unable to find many references to what the 'rebellious slaves' (who followed Spartacus) actually believed in, so other ideas like following the Greek deity of Eleutheria (freedom roughly speaking) or the Roman deity of Libertas (liberty) are possible too. Here is one ancient potters rendition of older Dionysus: Here is another (from a mosaic) depicting Dionysus invading India: CarlL You already seem to be on a convincing path to some really cool banners already Carll....and I bet it's adding to your enjoyment...maybe some slogan banners too, either in greek or Latin?

I came across this source of illustrations of Sicilian and German Knights in Europe during the 12th Century which provide very good images of armour, weapons,Shield devices and banners as well as an idea of the colour of clothing used during this time period...and thought it too interesting not to share. warfare.gq/12/Liber_ad_honorem_Augusti_th.htm

Making a good (second) start on my 25mm Gladiator / Spartacus army project. The idea (some 30 to 40 years ago) was to produce a BIG DBA army. I am mixing history and Hollywood, by depicting the close order parts of Spartacus army as gladiators rather than in captured Roman kit. So last week I laid out the contents of my Spartacus box on my games table, and found I had all the figures needed and all de-flashed and primed. So I put the 15 DBA Blade elements on painting sticks and decided I would use dark ink over the white primer where the figures have helmets, other armour or padding protection, so that I can then dry brush over to try and pick out the details on the sculpted figure. Today I completed that task so next I can look at dry brushing armour then dry brush padded arms etc.. I also managed to wrap some milliput around two vexillum spear points to create coiled snake like decoration for their tops, on a foot and a mounted vexillum carrying figures, as future standard bearers for Spartacus! CarlL Good luck with your new project Carll,it's nice to read a bit background on what work is to be done and understand a bit of what the job entails....to me that is also a vital and enjoyable part of the hobby.ππ

Building scale has always been an issue...in the case of using 15mm figures it's wether to use 6mm,10mm or 15mm scale building to represent what you want and find visually comfortable. My opinion on this is that it's down to the individual or mutually agreed before gaming....as long as it complies to rules then there shouldn't be a problem.
The same with other terrain as players use different materials and have their own take on how things should look.
As for hills I've always found some form of representing of gradients similar to ordinance survey best represent hight position on a hill...the element that is closest to the center point of a hill or ridge is upslope...plus this type of hill has less chance of figures sliding off than a more curved representation. In the end it's down to what players are happy with.

Good luck in the realm of the 3 Kingdoms Gregorious,it's a lovely army to do and an excellent period of Chinese History. If you aren't aware already and are interested in watching there are several videos available about the period(and a lot more) on YouTube.... youtube.com/@kingsandgenerals?si=mTHRMLGQc6xtnEgn...plenty to stir interest or just watch while your painting π

Now with the basing of the Spring & Autumn Chinese out of the way its time for a new project....especially since I am recovering from a knee operation I need something to occupy my time.
On looking through my DBA armies collected so far I was surprised that I was a bit light on book I & IV armies in comparison to the book II & III armies and there isn't an easy explanation why. Santa must of got wind of it as low and behold a Medieval German and Biblical Guti showed up for me on Christmas day(thanks Santa.π
π»).I hadn't been too keen on doing a German army, especially that I am a Great fan of the Swiss...so every time I thought of the Germans it came with a Boo & a Hiss. But after a few discussions with Paddy Green and a little reading into the background of 12th Century Germany, the Wendish Crusade and Frederick Barbarossa I was hooked...plus the figures I could choose from allow the army to look virtually Norman(another favourite of mine) with the choice of Danish or Early Polish allies....quite a diverse and interesting army....to cap it all one of the German Dukes turned out to be Richard the Lionheart's brother in law!
So today I've cleaned, removed flash and undercoated the first batch 5x3Kn(including General). Colour palette has been selected plus banners & flags have already been printed ready.π

Haardrada, we must have posted our respective answers simultaneously. Thanks for making the effort to locate what I couldn't initially find. Cheers,Β No problem, I was keen to get back into Hoffmansama's other posts as he's certainly done a lot of homework on the topic and included illustrations....I did a Western Tsin version of the army as a morph from the Sixteen Kingdoms armies....good luck with your project.π

I finally re-motivated myself to finish the final part of the Spring & Autumn Chinese.I thought by leaving the chariots until last I it would give me the incentive to drive the project...which it did,but I went about doing the chariots all the wrong way.Added that I could take the foot of the gas as I had a whole month to do the army..the job just stalled.Instead of dividing the chariots into paint groups of horses,main-frames and crew, I sort of did a bit here and a bit there with no real plan to the job.In a way I was trying to do one colour at a time but that didn't work out right as each part needed the same colour at a different time.I sort of completed the horses first, then the main-frames and then the crew.
After a few hours work this morning I can say that after a little tidy up work which I hope to do tomorrow(π€) they will be done and ready to base.
