Hi Carll
As far as I know the most northerly DBA tournament next year will be the Steel Warriors event in Sheffield on March 23rd.
If you check it out on the Tournaments tab there should be all the info there.
However some of the main reasons you may want to attend are: 1. The highest scoring player who has never played in a DBA competition before will be given a free DBA army, provided by our sponsors Irregular Miniatures. (If you register as wanting to attend, you'll be invited to be part of the vote for which armies Irregular provide as prizes.) 2. It's designed as a 'FUN' tournament, so you're encouraged to bring the worst DBA army possible, as you never play with it. 3. Some rounds are designed to give the people at the bottom a better chance against people at the top. 4. As myself and my brother are organising it there should be at least one of us around to quickly help answer any rule queries etc.
If you want to register interest just reply here. (Registering interest doesn't commit you as we'll be taking the money on the day, although obviously we'd like to be fairly certain of numbers near to the date to know how many tables to prepare etc.)
I'll be listing people who've expressed interest nearer the time.
If you have any other specific questions I'd be happy to answer them.
Cheers

So if presentation is what attracts people to a rule set and DBA is so poorly presented compared to other ancient rule sets, then by definition there should hardly be any new DBA players around?

I like the Great British Paint Off concept - bring on the Showstopper round 😉😂 P Ooh, some fun options for the technical - hoplite shield designs? Medieval heraldry? Fancy horses? Nah, technical round is where you're giving some felt, mdf, bits of moss, some grit and a can of green spray paint and have to produce some terrain that Stevie approves of!

I def want a GW like 200 pages of fluff having no bearing on the game whatsoever. Oh and adverts, dont forget some adverts. Also don't forget to split the army lists down into 5 separate time frames, fill them with lots of colour pictures and make them hardbacked so you can charge £15 each for them so the total package comes to about £100 to play before you even get the figures!

There will be the usual trophies: In addition, new for 2023 Best Presented Army Just noticed this! So not best painted army, otherwise Mr Murgatroyd could be a hot contender, but Best Presented! So my money is on Mr Hodson who's always extremely well presented. If he turns up with his Tuareg and gives a rendition of 'Sons of the Desert' he'll be hard to beat!! Can't wait!

Time Commanders was great. I will send in the Heavy Infantry through the swamp and the javelin skirmishers will hit the Roman legion head on. You obviously saw me play last Saturday! Ah but style counts for a lot and you were voted one of the top two best dressed participants.

I agree about the travel. I do Sheffield to Coventry (approx 4 hours there and back) in a day but anything beyond that it's a decision about whether to book an overnight in a hotel. I've regularly done Tarrington/Cold Ash because I enjoy the format, (which is why Steel Warriors is based on it)
Having just looked on Trivago there are hotels in and around Sheffield for Friday the 22nd March for around £40, but it does all add to the cost.

It would be a 5 hour round trip. A snip... Cold Ash is around 6 for me - get in the hotel and make a full weekend of it ;-) P. 6 hours!! Pah! 6 hours 45 for us from Yorkshire, and we have to get up before we go to bed!

Why are these things always so far away. Why where are you based? The locals tell me Sheffield is the centre of the universe so should be easy to get to from anywhere!?

Definitely interested but can't commit ATM No problem Pete, I'll add you to the list of interested parties and you can confirm nearer the time. At least that way you'll get a vote on the armies Irregular will provide as prizes. Same with any of the other Scimitar group who may be interested.

I think there was also a series where they got two groups of amateurs in and they used either the Total War computer game engine or something very similar to fight an historical battle.
I heard that a group of wargamers from the north west (I think) applied to go on the programme, but they were rejected because they were too good!

The main Steel Warriors event isn't happening next year, however the DBA competition will still go ahead, but with a change of venue.
Irregular Miniatures have again very generously agreed to sponsor the event by providing 3 unpainted DBA armies from their range of figures. As before I'll be asking those people who plan to attend to vote on their favourites from a selection.
Date: Saturday 23rd March 2024
Venue: Lomas Hall Church St Stannington Sheffield S6
Car parking: There are approx 12 car parking spaces at the club with plenty of free on street parking nearby
Public transport: The number 81 bus runs from the centre of Sheffield to near the venue, however these currently are only every half hour so please check an up to date timetable for details.
Time: 9.30 registration for 9.45 start - 4.30/5.00 approx (don't turn up before 9.00am as the hall will be shut)
Cost: £5 per head payable on the day. This is possible because the Crookes and Crosspool Tabletop Gaming group, (which I attend) have generously agreed to meet some of the room hire cost for us!
Theme: Levelling Up - as last year. Bring what you consider to be a rubbish DBA army (15mm on 40mm bases) with it's own set terrain, as you almost certainly won't have to play with it. Please note - last year's worst army, the Paionian is banned this year. If anyone doesn't have a poor DBA army but wants to come, just ask as we have plenty that can be provided.
Attitude: FUN, as before we'll be mixing the rounds up to try and provide some interesting challenges and maybe help those struggling at the bottom. (So don't expect 6 rounds of Swiss chess)
Places: We may have to limit numbers but should be able to cope with at least 30, so doubt we'll get full.
Booking: You can let us know now if you'd be interested in attending.
Prizes: There will be trophies for the podium places. 3 armies will be provided by Irregular Miniatures, which are; Thai/Siamese, Inca and Scots Common, will be chosen by the winner, the person who brings the worse performing army (so long as it's not the winner) and possibly the best performing newcomer (or some other category if there are no newcomers).
Other benefits: 1) Lawrence from Irregular Miniatures may come to the event and bring some of his stock, so if people have things they would like to buy on the day, please let me know in advance and, if he attends, I'll ask him to bring them and save you the postage. irregularminiatures.co.uk/indexes/15mmindex.htm
2) Tea and coffee will be available.
3) The Stannington shops are just 10 mins walk away and have plenty of food outlets e.g. supermarkets for meal deals, sandwich shop and a chippy etc. There is also a pub nearby.
4) Rumour has it that Mrs P Johnson may be providing brownies and cookies. There will NOT be a vote at the end of the day between these and Mrs Wilson's as to who's brownies are best!
5) We should have enough tables to put out for a Bring and Buy, (or Bring and Take back as Mr Smith more aptly calls it). So if you want to bring items for that just make sure you have your name on them so people can find you to give you the money.

Congratulations to Paddy, a worthy winner with a great set of results this year.
Is this the beginning of a Man City like era of domination?

Interestingly DBA 2.2 had the opportunity for Wb to move twice, if the PiPs were available, provided the second move was into contact.
I always thought that was a fairly reasonable simulation of a wild charge (if we believe that's how they fought) and it gave the Wb the chance to maybe catch the enemy line unprepared and in that circumstance give them a better chance of success, which would be more realistic.
However this rule disappeared with 3.0 and the change to base width movement.

I looked up the camel tie salesman joke on line, Mark. It made me laugh but my wife said it's terrible. If anyone was going to appreciate the camel tie salesman joke Paul, it is bound to be someone with an understanding of male sartorial elegance, such as yourself!
