Sorry for the basic question already treated on this forum, but I haven't played in a while and have forgotten, and don't find the relevant threads, so :
can we choose 0 optional terrains when we make the battlefield ?

Hi,
I would like to make a french version of these, would you accept to send me the modifiable file (Microsoft office format), or at least the illsutrations ? Where did you get them, by the way ? I would publish the french files on the wiki, of course.
Edit : never mind, I just read the whole thread, so I'm going to make the french version :-).

Hi all, I want to play the Cannae "double DBA" scenario from the (excellent) "great battles of history for DBA 3". For that, I need to add roman 4Ax units. I am looking for the most "historical" figs for these units, but it seems that at that time the "allied" legions represented bi these 4Ax units are mostly equipped like the roman legions, represented by the 4Bd units. So, how to represent these units (with which figs) to differenciate them form the 4Bd, apart from the base depth ? Should I take figs historically inaccurate but easier to differenciate while playing, or standard hastati / princepes, but on 20mm deep bases ? Earlier, I could use unassimilatied italian allies figs, later in th esecond punic war I could use penal legion, even later I could use Illyrian infantry (like in the Essex miniatures army pack), but for the early mid-republican army ? As I want to buy forged in battle figs, should I use : - oscan unarmoured peltasts (or another reference from the italian range) as if they were earlier unassimilated allies or : - roman accensi medium infantry (or another reference from the republican roman range), would that be more historical ? My 2nd Punic War Romans are Old Glory who do list allied figures for the period. To differentiate between Roman and Latin, their shields are red for the legion and white for the allies. If I recall correctly, there is a reference to this in Livy’s history of the war in Hispania. dbagora.blogspot.nl/2016/05/project-rome-consular-legions-completed.html
That's a good idea, thanks.

to complete my answer about the macedonian army :
in autumn 358BC he was called by the city of Larissa to fight against the city of Pherae. Source : french Wikipedia. But did it end up in battle ?
Then Philip was involved in the Third Sacred War which had begun in Greece in 356. In summer 353 he invaded Thessaly. Source : english wiki. But did he fight against a Thessalian army during that war ?

i just read "Chéronée Battle" from Jean Nicolas Corvisier (Economica) and reading Phillipe II story, i doubt that II/5d (Thessaly) was an enemy to the II/12 army (Thessaly seem to be more an ally than an enemy, that is reported in the army list btw) and Phillipe II was elected as a Tagos (war chief more and less) by Thessalians and finaly "lead" Thessaly... what do you think? It seems Philippe II was called by a thessalian city to fight against another thessalian city.

both seriously, I use the first one to update my own file, but in the long run and if you keep only one updated, the second one would be better...

Hi all,
I have just bought an essex army (https://www.essexminiatures.co.uk/products/dba-3-4-74-free-company-armagnac-1357-1410ad), and for the Mtd-4Lb units, they put both mounted archers (3 per unit) and archers on foot (4 per unit), which means they believe Mtd-Inf are units that can dismount during the battle, like mounted units in some of the armies (tibetans for example). But in the rules, it is said that Mtd-Inf move like knights but shoot and fight like the equivalent infantry unit, and on a base the same size as the other mounted types, so no need to represent the unit with two different versions, dismounted AND mounted, right ?
Then the question is : how do you represent them ? 3 Mounted archers per unit ? I thought to represent them with a rank of 4 dismounted archers, with an unmounted horse and one horseholder behind them, would that be clear enough ?

I concur Bob RE the large, expensive, packages. Wasted lead. Sure, for DBA armies. But you can make bigger armies or more DBA armies with a few references :-p. That said, the packaging is more adapated to some DBA armies, like hoplites or full cavalry armies. I bought their sassanids through their second "ancients" kickstarter, they were a pleasure to paint... Just ordered spartan hoplite boxes, the additional figs (light infantry and cavalry) will make units for other greek armies. I'll certainly pledge on their third "ancients" kickstarter, depending on the armies made. PROS : variety of the poses, quality of the scuplts, number of ranges in the covered periods CONS : packaging too big for DBA, price... My two favorite manufacturers are FIB and khurasan, essex being the "default" choice.

But seriously, leaving the Pike in place, it fights the element contacting its front (because that region still represents the element's "focus") and the Aux lacked the movement to fully engage. Hence fighting as -1 overlap. Seems sensible to me... In case the Pike were not also contacted to front, the Pike element commander says "hey, no one is in front of us, and I, now that my mind is free to wander, just noticed the Aux bearing down form the right front side. Everyone, let's go get 'em"... and they conform to fight... any chance to get a consensus here ?

Thank you stevie and twrnz (how would you prononce thant ?), I was asking only about turning to face in the specific case I was talking about, and not about conforming a unit contacted by a group, but your explanations have made that point clerarer as well, so thank you again.
And yes, I made this thread specifically to get an answer about that specific point about actual rules of DBA v3.
So if everyone shares that interpretation of the rules, you may lock this thread (in fact, it would be nice to add a few diagrams to explain these kind of cases, either in the FAQ or in a specific document. I believe a few more diagrams in the rules would have helped understand better these rules).
