That may be a consequence of our geography. Many competitions are close enough to get there and back in a day, with enough time to have played 5 or 6 games in the day. I'm assuming that players in Australia and north America have longer journeys and, having gone all that way, are keen to maximise the number of games they can fit in. We travel 14.5 hours ONE WAY to make Historicon (Florida to Pennsylvania.) Once there we might as well play/run as much stuff as possible. Honestly, taking the time off from work is the biggest problem (not that I am made of money) as it uses up almost 25% of my vacation days. Wargaming is still IMO a cheap hobby. Tony, do you and Mitch do that drive in one go or do you split it into 2 sessions and stay somewhere overnight? I'm also assuming that you share the driving. I'm at the age where a maximum of 8-9 hours driving is all that I can cope with. Armidale to Canberra, about 800 kms, takes around 9 hours driving excluding meal and comfort stops. Cheers,

Hmm, I think Simon has struggled for entrants to this year's one day event at £25. As they are charging £40 - £45 to attend a two day competition at Britcon (plus £60 - £110 for accommodation, plus parking charges,) I'm not sure that would be the best place to try? On the other hand it may limit the number of competitors to allow a format similar to the one Tony is running, if that's what the aim is. That may be a consequence of our geography. Many competitions are close enough to get there and back in a day, with enough time to have played 5 or 6 games in the day. I'm assuming that players in Australia and north America have longer journeys and, having gone all that way, are keen to maximise the number of games they can fit in. if we want to attempt a two-day competition in the UK, there is no getting round the cost of accommodation, meals and travel. After that, I think how one views the entrance fee is largely the psychology of the individual; either, "I'm already paying £200 for a weekend away. I'm blowed if I'm going to pay £45 on top of that!" or "I'm already paying £200. What's another £45?" (I realize that £45 is quite a lot of money for some people. But if cash is that tight, they probably wouldn't be considering an event that meant spending £200 on food, accommodation and travel.) I think that you are somewhat right about geography being part of the equation. Though, I will travel to Goulburn and Canberra (about 700 kms and 800 kms respectively) for a one day tournament. Luckily, I'm able to lodge with fellow Fanatic MarkBB, which saves considerably in costs. Cheers,

Cheers, We do the way up in two days because leaving at 5:00 AM here put us exactly at the wrong time to go around Baltimore AND DC on that day. When we leave early on Sunday (going arounds both cities before 8:00 AM on a SUNDAY) we make it back usually by 7:00 PM same day.
